Amid a growing chorus of conservative voices urging the arming of the Syrian opposition, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said Monday it's trying to broker a ceasefire that would bring at least a temporary halt to violence that has killed over 6,000 people.

Meanwhile, Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) called for the arming of the Syrian opposition, to defend itself from Bashar al-Assad's brutal crackdown. "It is time we gave the (opposition) the wherewithal to fight back and stop the slaughter," McCain said at a Cairo news conference on Monday, Agence-France Press reported.
But top U.S. officials and analysts dismissed such proposals as hasty and unwise, especially given recent U.S. intelligence assessments that al-Qaida is operating in Syria to conduct attacks against the Assad regime.
"I think it's premature to take a decision to arm the opposition movement in Syria because I would challenge anyone to clearly identify for me the opposition movement in Syria at this point," Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told CNN's Fareed Zakaria in an interview broadcast Sunday... [In Full]

Just over half the eligible electorate participated in the referendum, which will realize several structural reforms in the constitutional makeup of Syrian government."

Protests against Quran burning rage for fourth dayEven as NATO and US troops are being attacked by the army they are ostenisbly training, and the attacks have increased dramatically:
Apologies: President Barack Obama on Thursday sent an official letter of apology to Afghan president Hamid Karzai over NATO troops' accidental burning of Qurans, but protests across Afghanistan continued unabated Friday for the fourth straight day, with protesters congregating outside NATO and Afghan government installations (CNN, AP,AJE, BBC, NYT, CNN). At least two protesters were killed in Kabul on Friday and many more across the country were injured (Reuters).
The killing of two NATO service members by a man in an Afghan Army uniform on Thursday during protests in Afghanistan occurred as the U.S. military is urgently reviewing its security procedures in order to prevent such friendly fire attacks (NYT). Of the 45 incidents of violence against NATO troops by Afghan security forces or private contractors since 2007, 75% have taken place in the last two years, intensifying officials' concerns over this issue... >Let’s pretend for one moment that you’re a music label. How do you stop the online piracy that’s eating into your profits? Here are some possible steps:Find out why @ Forbes... "The Tricky Job Of Banning The Pirate Bay"
Step 1: Get a lawyer.
Step 2: Send a cease and desist order to The Pirate Bay, the biggest BitTorrent site for sharing movies, music, porn, computer programs, you name it.
Step 3: Realize you don’t know who is operating The Pirate Bay. Notice they are dismissing all legal threats on their blog with statements like: “0 torrents has been removed, and 0 torrents will ever be removed. :)”
Step 4: Go back to the drawing board.
Step 5: Seek a High Court judgement that lets you get an injunction on the country’s top Internet Service Providers (ISPs). This way, they can block their customers from accessing The Pirate Bay.
Step 6: Realize that people who use The Pirate Bay are quickly finding new ways to evade their ISPs.
Step 7: Go back to the drawing board.
We’re at Step 5 in Britain.
Earlier this week Britain’s High Court agreed with Sony and eight other record labels, that the Pirate Bay infringed on copyright. This gave the labels permission under section 97A of the Copyrights, Designs and Patents Act to get an injunction on Britain’s six biggest Internet Services Providers, ordering the likes of BSkyB, BT Group and Virgin Media to block access to The Pirate Bay. (The fire-sharing site has 3.7 million users in Britain, according to comScore.)
Many see this as a devastating act of censorship. The Pirate Bay dubbed the U.K. the “United Kingdom of Censorship,” in response to the ruling. Site co-founder Peter Sunde, who no longer works with the site but is fingered in the High Court judgment, said the entertainment industry was a “copyright mafia” seeking “protection money” from ISPs. The U.K.’s Pirate Party said Britain was “sleepwalking into comprehensive site-blocking.”
It does seem a tad hypocritical of the British government to condemn online censorship in the Middle East, before going on to suggest blockades of social networks during riots and watching its courts ban troublesome piracy sites. But actually blocking a site like The Pirate Bay is so complicated, it may even be ineffectual anyway...

Qur'an protesters attack Kabul compound housing foreigners«o» Two days of talks between officials of the IAEA and Iran regarding it's nuclear power program have apparently left the IAEA officials dissatisfied and Iranian officials have apparently suggested a pre-emptive strike against Israel to match Israel's longstanding threat to Iran.
US embassy also in lockdown as violent clashes spread across Afghanistan on second day of protests over burning of holy book
Emma Graham-Harrison in Kabul
guardian.co.uk, 22 February 2012
Afghan protesters armed with stones and molotov cocktails have attacked a military base and a compound housing foreign workers in Kabul, in a second day of violence over the burning of copies of the Qur'an by foreign forces.
At least 16 demonstrators and one police officer were injured as enraged crowds took to the streets in central and eastern Afghanistan, shouting "Death to America" and "Death to Obama".
Police in Kabul used water cannon and fired guns into the air to deter the demonstrators, who were attacking shops and smashing car windows. Security guards in the compound that came under attack also opened fire with automatic rifles.
A military base was attacked on the outskirts of the capital.
Eleven men were treated for gunshot wounds in Kabul, said Kabir Amiri, spokesman for the city's hospitals. Another five people were injured in eastern Jalalabad, said Ahmad Zia Ahmadzai, spokesman for the provincial governor.
The demonstrations began in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after Afghan workers at the sprawling Bagram airbase spotted copies of the Qur'an among waste paper sent for incineration.
They extinguished the flames and left the base with some of the damaged books, which had been taken from prisoners in a detention centre at Bagram.
A military official, who asked not to be named, said the books had been removed from the jail library because some had added inscriptions that appeared to be in use to "facilitate extremist communications" or were extremist "in and of themselves".
Nato-led forces rushed to apologise for the burning, which the commander of foreign forces in Afghanistan, General John Allen, described as "not intentional".
But damage to the Qur'an is a highly sensitive issue in Afghanistan and protests began almost immediately.
"When the Americans insult us to this degree, we will join the insurgents," said Ajmal, an 18-year-old protester in Kabul told Reuters.
The city's police chief, Ayub Salangi, came to the most violent protest in the city to appeal for calm. "I am with you, please cool your temper, I am with you," he told the crowd, but they turned on him and started throwing stones at his car. [More]

As US Debt To GDP (ratio) Passes 101%, The Global Debt Ponzi Enters Its Final Stages
by Tyler Durden, 02/21/2012
Today, without much fanfare, US debt to GDP hit 101% with the latest issuance of $32 billion in 2 Year Bonds. If the moment when this ratio went from double to triple digits is still fresh in readers minds, is because it is: total debt hit and surpassed the most recently revised Q4 GDP on January 30, or just three weeks ago. Said otherwise, it has taken the US 21 days to add a full percentage point to this most critical of debt sustainability ratios: but fear not, with just under $1 trillion in new debt issuance on deck in the next 9 months, we will be at 110% in no time. Still, this trend made us curious to see who has been buying (and selling) US debt over the past year. The results are somewhat surprising. As the chart below

So somehow the world's two most indebted countries (recall that Japan is about to in total pass 1 quadrillion debt) are out there and buying up the biggest amount of US debt (after the Fed of course)? Sorry, but while we are amusing by this attempt by the global ponzi regime to keep itself alive (even as Russia and China prudently step aside from the mauling that is sure to follow), whereby the most indebted nations keep buying each other's debt in the most transparent and potentially deadly shell game in history, we are also confident this is unsustainable... The Federal Reserve's Explicit Goal: Devalue The Dollar 33%In Greece, "Cradle of Democracy":
The Federal Reserve Open Market Committee (FOMC) has made it official: After its latest two day meeting, it announced its goal to devalue the dollar by 33% over the next 20 years. The debauch of the dollar will be even greater if the Fed exceeds its goal of a 2 percent per year increase in the price level.
An increase in the price level of 2% in any one year is barely noticeable. Under a gold standard, such an increase was uncommon, but not unknown. The difference is that when the dollar was as good as gold, the years of modest inflation would be followed, in time, by declining prices. As a consequence, over longer periods of time, the price level was unchanged. A dollar 20 years hence was still worth a dollar.
But, an increase of 2% a year over a period of 20 years will lead to a 50% increase in the price level. It will take 150 (2032) dollars to purchase the same basket of goods 100 (2012) dollars can buy today. What will be called the “dollar” in 2032 will be worth one-third less (100/150) than what we call a dollar today... [More]

Afghan Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid told CNN in an email on Tuesday that the Taliban refuse to negotiate with President Hamid Karzai's "puppet" government, considering these talks pointless as "everyone around the world knows that the one who has got the authority in opposition to the Mujahideen [Taliban] is America" (CNN). Mujahid also confirmed that the Taliban have met with U.S. officials in Qatar, but that trust-building measures -- such as the release of Guantánamo Bay detainees -- must be completed before talks can proceed.
