«o» PFC Bradley Manning got his arraignment day in court yesterday. Manning has been accused of turning hundreds of thousands of documents including the globally viewed "Collateral Murder" video over to WikiLeaks. He has 22 counts against him including 'aiding the enemy'.
Over the last two years of his incarceration he spent a year in solitary confinement at Quantico brig and was tortured in the manner they torture inmates at SHU ('Security Housing Unit') prisons throughout America.
The confinement itself is a form of torture.
For a start, despite the fact the locked down prisoners spend 23 hours in a cell, the cell is not high enough to stand up in. Bradley Manning, convicted of nothing yet has been subject to that treatment for a year. The confinement most likely permanently damaged his skeletal structure as it does with CONVICTED prisoners at California's Pelican Bay and other hellholes you never read about in the newspapers until the prisoners riot.
«o» al-Qaeda has claimed US intelligence reports were correct in regard to a rash of bombings around Iraq yesterday that killed and injured 240+ people.
«o» Pakistan wants to host ceasefire talks between the Taliban and the government of Afghanistan with the US in an observer role
«o» Maryland is about to become the ninth state to pass a same sex marriage bill. The governor says he will sign it as soon as it clears the legislature.
«o» Germany is pulling out of their only base in Afghanistan and will continue operating in the country in a support role only.
Meanwhile, all around Afghanistan the word on the street is "Apologies ARE NOT enough!"
Protests against Quran burning rage for fourth dayEven as NATO and US troops are being attacked by the army they are ostenisbly training, and the attacks have increased dramatically:
Apologies: President Barack Obama on Thursday sent an official letter of apology to Afghan president Hamid Karzai over NATO troops' accidental burning of Qurans, but protests across Afghanistan continued unabated Friday for the fourth straight day, with protesters congregating outside NATO and Afghan government installations (CNN, AP,AJE, BBC, NYT, CNN). At least two protesters were killed in Kabul on Friday and many more across the country were injured (Reuters).
The killing of two NATO service members by a man in an Afghan Army uniform on Thursday during protests in Afghanistan occurred as the U.S. military is urgently reviewing its security procedures in order to prevent such friendly fire attacks (NYT). Of the 45 incidents of violence against NATO troops by Afghan security forces or private contractors since 2007, 75% have taken place in the last two years, intensifying officials' concerns over this issue...
