Rise & Fall of The Washington Times: The Ex-Nazis, Cocaine Smugglers & Cultists Who Created a Right-Wing Propaganda Organ, And Brought It Crashing Down
By Robert Parry, Consortium News
May 6, 2010
As an investigative journalist, I’m not much for catchy political metaphors, but the revelation that snakes and rodents are infesting the Washington Times building as the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s newspaper sinks into a financial swamp does have some poetic justice about it.
After all, for 28 years, the right-wing Washington Times has sent disinformation slithering through the U.S. political system while creating a nest for propagandists who have befouled American democracy with irrationality and dirty tricks.
Indeed, one could say that Moon's newspaper pioneered the modern style of deceptive “journalism” that is the daily fare on Fox News, angry talk radio and right-wing blogs.
The immediate cause of the Washington Times’ financial collapse is said to be the bitter succession fight among children of the 90-year-old Unification Church founder who is no longer capable of maintaining personal control over his global religious-political-business empire.
That empire has now split into competing factions, with one of Moon’s children, Justin Moon, who is in charge of the Asian operations, deciding to slash the church’s massive subsidy to the Washington Times headed by another son, Preston Moon.
Nicholas Chiaia, one of the two remaining members of the newspaper’s board of directors, told the Washington Post that the Washington Times is up for sale. “We recently entered into discussions with a number of parties interested in either purchasing or partnering with the Washington Times,” he said.
Meanwhile, staffers who have survived a series of draconian layoffs report that snakes and mice have slipped into the newspaper’s building because the owners can’t afford exterminators to combat the infestations.
“There was a three-foot-long black snake in the main conference room the other day,” said reporter Julia Duin. “We have snakes in the newsroom.”
So, although some deep-pocket conservative might step up and save the American Right’s flagship newspaper, it appears that the Washington Times’ extraordinary run as a foreign-controlled and suspiciously funded propaganda vehicle may soon be over.
A Curious Case
It has long been amazing that Official Washington has been so blasé about the curious case of the Washington Times, where a Korean theocrat – known for brainwashing his followers and for maintaining close ties with international drug cartels and foreign intelligence agencies – has been allowed to spend billions of unregulated dollars to influence U.S. political decision-making.
The fact that Moon wrapped himself in “conservative” political garb – and was quick to denounce any investigations of his organization as “religious bigotry” – helped fend off inquiries into exactly where his money was coming from.
But what proved most important was how Moon made himself useful to Ronald Reagan, the Bush Family and other Republican heavy-hitters – often by putting into play propaganda smearing their political enemies. These Republicans, in turn, helped protect Moon, at least since the late 1970s.
During the Carter administration, the congressional “Korea-gate” probe into South Korean influence-buying in Washington revealed Moon’s foreign intelligence ties and some of his criminal activities, leading to his conviction on tax fraud charges in 1982.
In that same year, however, Moon took steps to insulate himself from further inquiries, most notably by launching the Washington Times. Since then, Moon’s empire – from its local fundraising scams to its international money-laundering – has escaped any serious government examination... [In Full]

In The News:
Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the commentary audio file.
Afghanistan's president Hamid Karzai visits president Obama for a woodshed meeting about what happens next in Afghanistan, and their 'realities' are quite different, including Karzai's resistance to more US troops in country. It boils down to a Loya Jirga Vs. an Offensive in Kandahar province. More.
For more, see: From Kandahar, View of a 'Counterproductive Counterinsurgency' By Spencer Ackerman at the Washington Independent
Also notable, an overview from the Washington Post by Zalmay Khalilzad, who served as U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq and the United Nations in the George W. Bush administration... "A fence-mending agenda for President Obama and Afghanistan's Hamid Karzai". Also see: "Time to Talk to the Taliban?" from ABCNews.
There's nothing new in the way of controlling the Gulf oil spill. The oil flow has slowed a bit and there's more natural gas than expected. An oil eating bacteria that turns to fertilizer may be used, but the damage to the environment will already have been done. Meanwhile, the oil company executives shift the blame.
SOMEONE at the White House is a little testy about all this though:
White House Asks Congress To Lift Cap on Oil Spill Liability
The White House asked Congress Wednesday to lift liability caps on oil companies, increase the excise tax that finances cleanups and provide $118 million in emergency spending to help deal with the ongoing oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
The legislative request comes nearly four weeks after an oil rig leased by BP exploded April 20 and sank off the Louisiana coast. White House officials insisted that BP, which leased the Deepwater Horizon rig from Transocean Ltd., will repay the government for the majority of the requested emergency spending, much of which would go to unemployment aid for affected workers and help for communities on the Gulf Coast.
Some of the spending, such as funding for additional Interior Department inspections of other oil wells, would not be reimbursed.
The White House still needs to hash out details of the package with Congress, particularly regarding its proposed changes to the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, which was created by Congress after the 1989 Exxon Valdez spill and is currently financed by an 8 cents-per-barrel production tax on the oil industry... [More]
Twenty US drones strikes have killed 24 SUSPECTED 'militants' in Waziristan and Pakistan. "...more than 900 people have been killed in more than 90 US strikes in the tribal areas since August 2008.
The White House has a new policy on illegal drugs that includes prevention, health care, rehab, and youth programs.
Britain has a new Prime Minister David Cameron, Liberal Democrat, to the left of Labor and he's in the process of forming a coalition government with the Conservatives.
Meanwhile, according to Pew: "A survey from Pew finds broad public approval for Arizona's new immigration-enforcement policy on numerous fronts--not just up-or-down approval of the new law itself, but on numerous fronts. Politically, the law is supported broadly by Republicans and independents; Democrats are the only partisan group to opppose it."
Certainly it wouldn't lead to... dast I say... (dast! dast!) SELECTIVE ENFORCEMENT?
From CQ Behind The Lines... Police State News:
“A decade after the Sept. 11 attacks, it increasingly seems to have come to this: Americans have met the enemy — and he is carrying a U.S. passport,” The Associated Press’ Jesse Washington surveys. The startling and depressing truth is that eight years after Sept. 11, we cannot say with confidence that we are likely to prevent the next attack here . . . [T]here is no such thing as 100 percent success in counterterrorism,” Matthew Levitt comments for Politico.
Law & Disorder: “U.S. officials are considering new tactics — including re-examining the right to remain silent — in the ever-evolving war against al Qaeda and its affiliates,” FOX News leads. Pushing back against the Justice I.G.’s criticism, the FBI director says a troubled case management system being developed by Lockheed Martin should be ready in 2011, The Washington Post’s Marjorie Censer mentions. A federal judge refuses to dismiss charges against an accused terrorist in Manhattan despite defense arguments that he was tortured in secret CIA jails, The New York Times’ Benjamin Weiser relates.
One More Thing:
Something definitely being seen on the streets in Santa Cruz, many of them local kids...
More runaways citing economy
Three times as many teen runaways cited economics as a factor in 2009 as did so in 2000, according to data by the National Runaway Switchboard, a hotline that handles more than 100,000 calls each year and receives public and private funds. The "Why They Run" report is based on caller data and youth interviews.
The weak economy also helps explain why the number of calls from homeless youth doubled from 739 in 2008 to 1,470 last year, says the hotline's executive director, Maureen Blaha. She says some of the youth (up to age 22) or their parents lost jobs or couldn't get work.

In The News:
Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the news and commentary audio files.
The news this morning contains details about
The volcano in Iceland still disrupting travel around Europe with the Southern and Western regions hardest hit.
Over 4 million gallons of oil have now spilled into the Gulf of Mexico and BP is blaming... Wait for it... Halliburton... for some shoddy underwater concrete work. There will be two senate hearings today.
The Mineral Management Services of the Department of Interior which had bureaucrats literally sleeping and partying with industry representatives during the Bush administration has been "re-organized" to include 'checks and balances'.
Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has a plan now that his Labor government has collapsed... He want to stay in power until the time a coalition government is formed.
More News Off The Wire:
More on the Department of Interior, whose MMS (recounted above) and other agencies have traditionally raped the Native American nations of their natural resources, is now robbing them of their right to hold elections:
ANADARKO, Oklahoma—A judge with the U.S. Interior Department used federal powers to stop a ballot election from being held by the Kiowa Indian Tribe of Oklahoma. Federal orders kept Kiowas from going to the polls and exercising their rights to vote since March, in a special election that would have decided whether to recall Don Tofpi as Kiowa Business Committee Chairman and ban him from holding future office.
Judge Phil Lujan, with the BIA’s Court of Indian Offenses, commonly known as CFR Court, issued Temporary Restraining Orders and Injunctions against the Kiowa Hearing Board and the Kiowa Election Board that restrain them from completing their duties in the recall election of Chairman Don Tofpi, until such time as the orders are further modified by the Court.
For more than a month, federal injunctions on the election remain in full force and effect, essentially shutting down the Tribe’s ability to function as a constitutional democracy. According to Judge Lujan’s decree, violation of the orders by either of the Kiowa Boards, or their members individually, will be punishable by the Court in contempt actions. [In Full]
The DHS Warns us that returning Veterans are potential terrorists
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Wednesday that she was briefed before the release of a controversial intelligence assessment and that she stands by the report, which lists returning veterans among terrorist risks to the U.S.
But the top House Democrat with oversight of the Department of Homeland Security said in a letter to Ms. Napolitano that he was "dumbfounded" that such a report would be issued.
"This report appears to raise significant issues involving the privacy and civil liberties of many Americans - including war veterans," said Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, in his letter sent Tuesday night.
The letter was representative of a public furor over the nine-page document since its existence was reported in The Washington Times on Tuesday.
In her statement Wednesday, Ms. Napolitano defended the report, which says...

5 most ridiculous moments in terrorist history
"To become an Assassin you first had to go through a trial that is fairly unique in history. A prospective initiate had to smoke hash until he blacked out.
Seriously.
The first step to becoming an assassin was to literally smoke yourself retarded.
Afterwards you’d awaken in a lush garden, filled with fountains and the most beautiful damsels in all the land, who would feed him every type of delicious morsel and subject you to sexual pleasures he might not even had known were possible. Odds are, to become an assassin you’d have to be cool with having a finger stuck somewhere uncomfortable. Possibly the back of a Volkswagen.
As the day went on you were given more and more pleasures, and more and more hash, until you passed out from the dope once again. A finger may still have been somewhere uncomfortable. When you woke up, the whole process began again, until finally an Assassin explains that what you’ve just experienced was but a tiny glimpse into the Paradise that awaited you if you would die for Allah as an Assassin.
Once you accepted their offer you would learn all the ways of the dagger (while high), how to mix poisons (while high), become a master of disguises (also while high), and how to pass for a member of any religion or culture in the region (while, of course, high). On your mission you must be focused on the kill alone, not your own escape, or where to find some munchies.
Assassins carried out hundreds of bleary-eyed killings as they spread their empire from Persia across the rest of the Middle East, and faded from notoriety only after their supply of marijuana finally ran dry.
But the best part…" [In Full]

Yesterday, the stock market gained 700 points in 7 minutes.... after losing 1000 in 10, because SOMEONE signed on to sell a million shares of Proctor & Gamble but hit the button marked B (BILLION) instead of M (Million). Along with jitters over the economies of Spain Portugal and Greece (see the next piece) that share dump caused a chain reaction of automatic trading through the market... A few of the largest U.S. companies were worth ZERO at some point. Much closer to their actual value than usual. Case in point P&G's Price-Earning ratio last month was 15:1. For the non-market savvy. that means for every dollar of the company's earnings, one pays $15. Not QUITE gambling.
Greece passes a law to borrow $140 billion dollars but the Greek people will have their retirement age extended from 53, social benefits will be cut... and so much more. This leads to 4 days of riots, bank burnings... 4 dead. More.
New job numbers are out... 295,000 new jobs were created last month (...want fries with that sir?) but unemployment is still rising.
The middle class Pakistani-American who tried a half-assed car bombing in Times Square is apparently a follower of Anwar al-Awlaki, currently believed to be in Yemen. More in the commentary.
The Senate Democrats defeat an attempt by the Republicans to kill funding for the Consumer Protection Agency attached to the Consumer Reform Bill.
Kimberly-Clark has a new series of "Pampers" toddler diapers with a desiccant in them to absorb urine. The desiccant is apparently causing rashes on many children.
The British are going to have to form some sort of a coalition government after the recent elections fail to deliver a majority to any particular party. The Queen may have to decide who the next Prime Minister will be... over tea. Seriously.
Reference for the commentary's featured 'terrorist':
Anwar al-Awlaki (also spelled Aulaqi; born April 22, 1971 (age 39) in Las Cruces, New Mexico)[3][4][5][6] is an American Muslim lecturer, spiritual leader, and former imam. As of early 2010, he was thought to be living in Yemen.[7] Numerous sources have claimed Al-Awlaki incites terrorism and has ties to the terrorist organization al-Qaeda. Anwar al-Awlaki has denied all such charges,[7][4][8] and some analysts have said the alleged ties to the group are "more speculative and assumed than concrete."[9] Although al-Awlaki is a U.S. citizen, President Barack Obama approved the targeted killing of al-Awlaki; a step that required the consent of the National Security Council, and that made him the first U.S. citizen ever to be placed on the list of those the CIA is allowed to kill.[10][11][12] [Wikipedia, Anwar al-Awlaki

The Times Square Car Bomber is a Pakistani/American 'child of privilege who's "American World" crashed around him during the financial collapse and a Pakistani Taliban spokesman says they have nothing to do with him.
The Gulf of Mexico oil slick is holding offshore at the moment as dikes are built and Cofferdams are being prepared to control and contain the spill. One of the smaller leaks has been stopped. Details
Various polls have convinced congress that the American people think they aren't doing their job so, for the first time, they actually voted to REALLY deny themselves a pay raise. More
Even when they work they don't cure anything - Johnson & Johnson cold 'remedies' for children have been recalled due to non-existent quality control and contamination. If you have any child-related product from this company, just throw them away.
This is what the Tennessee Valley Authority was created to prevent - There are at least 29 dead so far due to flooding in the Tennessee Valley. It has swamped the Grand Old Opry all the way to the stage and Memphis is also experiencing some serious damage.
In response to the collapse of the Greek currency a general strike has drawn 100,000 people on a march to parliament. A bank was burned and three are confirmed dead.
Finally, in local Santa Cruz News...
April 29 2010
Due to the expansion of the Wednesday Downtown Santa Cruz Farmers Market, the traditional drum circle has been forced to moved away from it's spot to avoid immediate confrontation with the police and market. The location picked is a parking lot across the street from Jacks Burgers, the location is nearer the street, easily visible to the police who often complained about drinking and drugs in the more recessed site originally used, it is also away from the market.
This, I believe is a positive response to various complaints by the other interested parties, police, city, and businesses.
Last Wednesday a police supervisor stopped by to discuss noise complaints numbering 12 (but perhaps 12 calls by one or two businesses).
The compromise offered by the city and police... Simply "...Away from here" (If this sounds familiar, it's the same rejoinder used by the White settlers in discussion with the Native Americans. Paraphrased by a native as "We move and we move, but you (the settlers) continue to say "You are too close, move farther away", and in the early 1900s as "You make us move so often why don't you just put wheels on us and wheel us about?"
The police supervisor suggested "The Beach", cold, and remote, or a local park (San Lorenzo) that has historically been a source of noise complaints even when children play due to senior citizen housing across the street.
The other location... Santa Cruz town clock... In the middle of the heaviest vehicular traffic part of Santa Cruz, to be drowned in smog and traffic noise.
None of these sites are acceptable. An un-official counter-offer was made offering time constraints just to see if the city and police WERE willing to compromise... I received no response and a blank stare from the police supervisor, officer Harms, who was undoubtedly delivering an ultimatum disguised as a 'compromise'.
The Drummers will be at the same site tomorrow... despite the possibility of police action.
This is a shout out to ALL Santa Cruz locals, including Santa Cruz Veterans recently displaced from their county usurped and operated meeting hall under spurious and suspicious circumstances. Y' all come on down to the Farmers Market today, Wednesday for donuts and coffee, music and merriment. Bring a drum, a guitar, a flute, any musical instrument...
Bang a gong. Let's get it on!
And overcome our hesitation
Maybe we could join our love as one
And storm the gates of heaven...
