«o» In our not-so-secret war on Yemen's citizens with the Yemeni government's assistance, the 'government' claims it killed forty three "al-Qaeda rebels" (Note the Weasel Words @ Foreign Policy's Middle East "Channel" below) in air raids... The chances of them ALL being al-Qaeda is about nil. The strike probably wiped out a whole tribal family with one or two of them having been somehow affiliated with the Yemeni insurgents who are attempting to take down the government.
Yemeni airstrikes kill 43 al Qaeda fighters as militants blow up oil pipelineAlso, in Nigeria, a "Joint Task Force" is pursuing the Islamic militant group Boko Haram who are ALSO alleged to be al-Qaeda... A phrase that now appears to be re-branded to mean they're Muslim and in opposition to Western Ways, as opposed to the original usage meaning literally, "The Database"... of Muslim CIA fighters working for the US and NATO.
Yemen's army killed up to 43 suspected al Qaeda-linked militants during airstrikes in a three-day offensive in the southern provinces of Aden and Abyan. According to the government, forces have reclaimed control of strategic cities that serve as links to the north, including what has become the al Qaeda base in the al-Rahha mountainous region of Lahj. The assault came after two attacks by militant fighters on Yemeni army bases in the area. Al Qaeda has been exploiting instability in Yemen to strengthen its control in the region. According to Mohammed al-Qadhi, a Sanaa-based journalist, "Al-Qaeda [is] using the stalemate in the political process and the continued division of army and security forces...to expand their activities in different southern provinces."
Meanwhile, the al Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al-Sharia claimed responsibility for bombing an oil pipeline in southern Yemen on Monday... [In Full(with links)]
The movement, whose name in the Hausa language, Boko Haram, translates as "Western education is sacrilege"[9] or "a sin",[11] (wikipedia)But in the fine print... "It was also gathered that new operational order and rules of engagement for assorted criminals, especially Boko Haram and Niger Delta Militants..."
The last refers to MEND, the non-religious Niger Delta rebel group who have only voiced one main demand. That the deal the oil companies made with government of Nigeria and the Delta residents for community improvements in return for utterly taking over the region with oil infrastructure, be implemented. They are also in opposition to the damage the oil companies have done to the overall environment of their homeland.

«o» #OccupySanFrancisco was rousted by yesterday by the San Francisco police from an occupation of a two story abandoned building owned by the Catholic Archdiocese. They intended to turn it into a shelter. The Archdiocese stated it had no intention of allowing that to happen.
Meanwhile in Oakland, a farce and a tragedy... Just more proof the Obama administration has lied about every single one of their campaign promises (in this case the claim he would keep a legal hands-off stance on states with laws in regard to medical Marijuana) and the Oakland Police is derilict in it's community duty in so many ways by cooperating with the federal government in regard to that raid, and in spite of their own state's laws..

Oaksterdam University was founded by Richard Lee, the main backer of the California ballot measure defeated in 2010 that would have legalized marijuana in the state for recreational use. Restless MIGHT BE too mild a sentiment when Oakland locals digest today's news and realize the OPD were too busy raiding Oaksterdam university to stop a school shooting.
While the Oakland PD was busy protecting the DEA agents who raided Oaksterdam Associated Press was reporting 6 dead, 3 wounded in an Oakland California Christian university shooting.

It's called perception management, and the countervailing strategy is to preemptively point out what they're going to say before they say it. Because IF they say it after that, they'll have also have to prove it to make the statement credible, and given the MASSIVE amount of homeland security money plus military equipment aid the area's police departments receive, they'll be truly unlikely to convince anyone except the 'true believers' in their omnipotence.
Those believers will be hard to find in Oakland.

Eel market sizzles as prices hit $2k/lb in Maine

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Fishermen in Maine are cashing in on tiny translucent baby eels that make their way up the state’s streams and rivers each spring.
A worldwide shortage of elvers has driven prices up to an unprecedented $2,000 a pound.
Fishermen catch the alien-looking, toothpick-sized eels in nets and sell them to dealers who ship them to Asia, where they’re grown out to market size in aquaculture ponds. One dealer says a pound of grown eels should be worth around $30,000 on the open market.
Eel prices first skyrocketed last year, making elvers Maine’s fourth most-valuable wild fishery. They were worth more than groundfish, shrimp or scallops.
This year’s high prices have fishermen and dealers on edge about poachers, the safety of fishermen, the secrecy of fishing spots and unwanted publicity... [More Fish Stories]

«o» Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is in the Middle East trying to whip up support at the "Friends of Syria" meeting for more destabilization in Syria. She says the US will supply communications equipment and 'humanitarian aid' to the Turkish based opposition who DO NOT like the new, more democratic constitution, as they were hoping to take power and usurp the reins of a more authoritarian state. The Saudis just want to give the rebels guns... The US supplies almost every weapon the Saudis own.
It's also notable this is where the West got directly involved in the first place last year with a pirate broadcast station operated IN SYRIA specifically intended to broadcast anti-government information and instructions to our CIA fighters who were already flocking to Syria from Libya.
«o» In Myanmar... Burma... after fifty years of totalitarian rule elections are being held for 44 seats. The followers of Aung San Suu Kyi, whose been in jail or under house arrest for the last 30 years or so took quite a few of those seats but not enough to control the parliamentary government under military rule.

They have been fined the equivalent of $140.00 (USD) and will serve 45 days in jail or under house arrest. THey will most likely be deported to Saudi Arabia or Yemen after serving their sentences.
«o» Canada is planning to take their penny out of circulation due to the simple fact it costs more to make ($0.016 manufacturing cost) and handle them than it's worth.

«o» The oil companies are in the news. Yesterday president Obama went to the White House Rose Garden and made a speech saying that congress should drop tax breaks and subsidies for the oil companies.
«o» The Republicans don't like that idea... further, congressman Ryans 'slasher' budget passed the house with an overwhelming majority yesterday but it's sure to die in the Senate. The House also voted to kill any possibility of the Simpson-Bowles budget balancing amendment's passage.
«o» Unlike the US House of Representatives, collective economic planning works - It's been 13 years since China opened it's national oil company, and they've just reached number one in global sales surpassing EXXON/Mobil, BP, or any other Western oilco.
«o» If you're not a vegetarian you've been eating it... 40% of all ground beef sold in the US has at least 10-15% "Pink Slime" content. Pink Slime, for want of a more complex description, is pulped and liquefied beef scraps with ammonia added. Many restaurant chains are dropping beef with the 'additive' due to unpalatable publicity, but no one's talking about Hot Dogs... Are they even really pork and beef at all?
«o» Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is on her way to Saudi Arabia for meetings with King Abdullah before her trip to a sixty nation meeting about 'what to do about Syria'. How about we just let their new constitution stand and reel in NATO's al-Qaeda and CIA mercenaries who are destabilizing the country?

Bluegrass pioneer Earl Scruggs dies at age 88

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — It may be impossible to overstate the importance of bluegrass legend Earl Scruggs to American music. A pioneering banjo player who helped create modern country music, his sound is instantly recognizable and as intrinsically wrapped in the tapestry of the genre as Johnny Cash’s baritone or Hank Williams’ heartbreak.
Scruggs died Wednesday morning at age 88 of natural causes. The legacy he helped build with bandleader Bill Monroe, guitarist Lester Flatt and the rest of the Blue Grass Boys was evident all around Nashville, where he died in an area hospital. His string-bending, mind-blowing way of picking helped transform a regional sound into a national passion. [In Full @ Salon]

From Peaceful Uprising's Site:Environmental activist Tim DeChristopher, who was given a two-year sentence in prison for making fake bids in a Utah public land auction that was later found to be corrupt, has reportedly been moved to solitary confinement after a member of Congress contacted the Bureau of Prisons.If the description is correct, it seems like a congressman is trying to intimidate (Tim) DeChristopher for wanting to return money. To amplify the punishment because of an email is cruel. That the punishment is to place DeChristopher into solitary confinement is even more inhumane. In fact, it is what a fascist country would do to a political prisoner.
Peaceful Uprising, a climate change activism group which DeChristopher co-founded, states in a press release posted on March 27:On the evening of Friday March 9th, Tim DeChristopher was summarily removed from the minimum security camp where he has been held since September 2011, and moved into the FCI Herlong’s Special Housing Unit (SHU). Tim was informed by Lieutenant Weirich that he was being moved to the SHU because an unidentified congressman had called from Washington DC, complaining of an email that Tim had sent to a friend. Tim was inquiring about the reported business practices of one of his legal fund contributors, threatening to return the money if their values no longer aligned with his own.[Dissenter @ Firedoglake has more] (Still more @ CommonDreams)
According to Prison officials, Tim will continue to be held in isolated confinement pending an investigation.There is no definite timeline for inmates being held in the SHU — often times they await months for the conclusion of an investigation.

It has come to our attention that William Koch entered into an antitrust settlement where his company, Gunnison Energy, and SG Interest, a Texas energy company, conspired to orchestrate the bidding at a BLM oil and gas lease auction in Colorado. They memorialized this conspiracy in a memorandum of understanding that was subsequently revealed by a whistleblower.
The Department of Justice settled the matter by having each company pay a $275,000 fine, and allowed the conspirators to retain their successful BLM oil and gas leases, without any personal consequences. Tim was charged with conspiring to defeat the Act that created the auction, (a felony) and for making false statements to the Government (also a felony).
These oil and gas companies actually conspired to defeat an identical BLM auction, and made false statements to the Government (according to the Department of Justice). No Oil and Gas executive was charged with felonies and thrown in jail. They were given a token slap on the wrist and went back to drilling. Tim, a peaceful protester, who simply embarrassed the BLM by catching them making big mistakes, is now in a TINY CELL because someone from CONGRESS wants to keep him even quieter? WTF is going on here??

«o» It's the final day of US Supreme Court hearings on ObamaCare. Yesterday the justices considered if forcing American citizens to buy health insurance from commercial entities would be considered a tax. The court rejected that argument. Today is the one that can throw a screw into the works... It regards the boilerplate in multi-part bills that states if one part of a bill is declared void by a court the rest of the bill remains. the Obama administration, accidentally OR intentionally (yours truly cynically suggests the latter) left that part out. In other words there is no provision for the ObamaCare bill to be continued in the legislature if even a single part is tossed by the court, which is almost certain to happen to at least one of the many elements of the bill.
«o» The nuclear disarmament meeting in Seoul Korea continues with the big news involving President Obama and Russian president Medvedev accidentally having the following conversation over an open mic:

«o» Today is the first day of three special sessions in the US Supreme Court which will be ruling on the constitutionality of the Obama administration's (mostly unfunded) national health care plan, AKA ObamaCare. Today's session will hear arguments as to whether the court has jurisdiction to deliver a ruling at all until the plan goes into effect in 2014. Tomorrow the court will rule on a BIG ISSUE... whether the government can force individual citizens to buy a commercial product, which IS what health insurance IS in America. The last day will consist of other arguments. Expect decisions to come down in June... Just at the time US election campaigns are at a peak.
«o» Former vice president Dick Cheney had a 'last resort' heart transplant over the weekend. Cheney has had around five heart attacks over the last few years and if this transplant doesn't take he has little chance for survival. If it does, it buys him MAYBE half a decade more of life.
«o» President Obama is in South Korea for fifty nation talks on nuclear weapons reductions. This comes at a time when North Korea is challenging recent agreements with the US on food-for-weapons reduction by planning a rocket launch.
«o» The Pakistani parliament is in the process of discussing the US/Pakistan relationship. There is a lot of US funding dependent on the re-opening of the Khyber Pass, our primary resupply route for the war on Afghanistan.

[JURIST] The US government has paid compensation to the families of the victims of a shooting spree [JURIST report] allegedly committed by a US soldier, according to statements made by an Afghan elder. The families of the victims killed [AP report] in the incident received $50,00...0 and the families of wounded victims received $11,000. A US official confirmed that payments were made [CNN report], but refused to comment on the specific amounts. The amounts paid for victims of the shooting spree are significantly larger than what is normally paid to civilian victims of military operations. Civilian victims and their families are typically paid $2,000 for each civilian death and $1,000 for each wounded civilian. [More @ Jurist, with links]Note that the Pentagon is DESPERATE to rationalize how ONE PERSON in a society that's HEAVILY ARMED could kill so many people in the wake of claims by the Afghan government and military that up to 20 shooters were involved and air support was supplied. The Pentagon is now claiming the captured shooter Robert Bales didn't simply 'pause to reload', they're claiming he actually made two trips to the scene of the crime.
