March 28 2012 Travus T. Hipp Morning News & Commentary: So Exactly When Is Iran Going To Attack Sweden? On The Dust-up over Obama's Comments To Russia's Medvedev
A Synopsis Of This Morning's News... H/t to ChrisM my MP3Angel for supplying the audio files.
[After the commentary... Since no one likes us anyhow, Randy Newman vamps on paelo-conservative John Bolton and suggests we simply drop the big one now. "Political Science", courtesy of the respective artists and KPIG Radio Freedom California Earth] «o»It's the final day of US Supreme Court hearings on ObamaCare. Yesterday the justices considered if forcing American citizens to buy health insurance from commercial entities would be considered a tax. The court rejected that argument. Today is the one that can throw a screw into the works... It regards the boilerplate in multi-part bills that states if one part of a bill is declared void by a court the rest of the bill remains. the Obama administration, accidentally OR intentionally (yours truly cynically suggests the latter) left that part out. In other words there is no provision for the ObamaCare bill to be continued in the legislature if even a single part is tossed by the court, which is almost certain to happen to at least one of the many elements of the bill.
«o»The nuclear disarmament meeting in Seoul Korea continues with the big news involving President Obama and Russian president Medvedev accidentally having the following conversation over an open mic:
President Obama: On all these issues, but particularly missile defense, this, this can be solved but it’s important for him to give me space.
President Medvedev: Yeah, I understand. I understand your message about space. Space for you…
President Obama: This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.
President Medvedev: I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.
The Republicans, led by Mitt Romney, have jumped all over that exchange:
“We live in a dangerous world. American strength and American constancy are critical to the preservation of peace. Too often, the United States under your leadership has been neither strong nor constant. Your inadvertently recorded remarks to Russian President Dmitry Medvedev in South Korea raise questions about whether a new period of even greater weakness and inconstancy would lie ahead if you are reelected.” [Mitt Romney's Open Letter In Full]
Marc Lynch (aka abuaardvark) of the Neoliberal CNAS think tank could only state; "Just in case anyone worried we might have a serious foreign policy debate this year...".
@AuntieImperial >> @abuaardvark: I can't even tell you how low my expectations are. This MAY be the high point.
It might be noted one of the signatories on Romney's letter of complaint, John Bolton, is the guy who said, while acting as [and I DO MEAN 'acting'] US Ambassador to the UN; "If the U.N. secretary building in New York lost 10 stories, it wouldn't make a bit of difference")
«o»In Africa, Ghana's Mali's coup which overthrew 30 years of nominally democratic government has caused the US and France to cancel foreign policy transactions and credit with the country and the route for fuel to the country has been shut off at it's only source. Neighboring countries are hostile to the coup but for now it stands.
«o»Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has fired his chief of staff, laid off a third of his paid crew and cut his appearances in the run up to the Republican convention in Tampa Florida.
«o»Today is the final day for the pope in Cuba where he'll attend a mass rally and blessing in Revolutionary Square. He will also meet with Fidel Castro where he's expected to cajole Castro to look for a third way outside of communism.
He's just the person to talk about rational systems of government...
Pope Benedict XVI criticized Cuba’s Marxist system earlier today, saying he and the all-powerful being he personally represents find it backwards and out of step with common sense. Denouncing the Cuban regime in a language that’s been dead for centuries, Benedict noted that Marxism’s focus on state control of the means of production would actually work quite well if – like the Pope – Raul Castro was incapable of making mistakes.
«o»Latest measurements have the Sierra snowpack at 65% of normal up from 35% just a month ago, but it's unlikely to be enough to avoid water usage restrictions in California's Central Valley agricultural region.
In OTHER News: "Illness"... The pilot of a JetBlue commercial flight is removed from the plane after erratic behavior forced the crew to land in Amarillo, TX. Passengers say the pilot screamed about threats from al-Qaida and bombs aboard the aircraft. Read about his breakdown in flight at the Amarillo Globe-News
