» It's just like Television... Someone rates this stuff. Yesterday the Dow fell 634 points. For every stock that rose at the New York Stock Exchange, more than 69 fell. Gold ended at $1,720 and Silver made it to $39. Meanwhile the Republicans are screaming for the president to produce a plan, but in reality congress makes the 'plan' (hence the problem, S&P and Moody's didn't care for their plan, calculated to resolve a little over half the FOUR TRILLION dollar debt, and rammed it through so they wouldn't be required to show everyone their corrupt sides during next year's presidential election cycle) and the president executes it. Also, Secretary of the Treasury Geithner who has been dunned by the Republicans to resign, said he's not going anywhere.
Standards & Poors elaborates on their reason for downgrading US debt obligations:
“We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act.” — Page 4, Standard & Poors Research Update, August 5, 2011

S&P Sovereign Debt Committee Chairman, John Chambers told that US lawmakers of both Democrat and Republican parties work together to confront the nation debt issues and turn the nation towards the progressive economic path as it was did in 1980 to overhaul the factors which had the US economy into critical position by a strong compromise and firm cooperation of both parties. This is a main problem that has to be concentrated by US law makers, without any political motive, to overcome the financial crisis and regain the status AAA as a risk free borrower in Standard & Poor rating list.
As you have enacted a bill in the floor of the Congress on eleventh hour of deadline to save only around $2.1 trillion instead of #4 trillion, you have done a part of job to overcome the nation’s debt burden not a full of it. Five governments have regained their AAA status after losing it, it has taken them between 9 to 18 years to get it back. Generally one loses its rank AAA, cannot get it immediately, said S&P Debt Committee Chairman, Chamber. [In Full]

The S&P Downgrade of US Debt: What it Means

S&P downgraded the US national debt because these economic and political dimensions (see the rest of the article) of the US today guarantee a worsening of the nation's debt. Thus, a basically political problem is looming for those lenders who purchased and now own the debt obligations of the US (i.e. Treasury securities). The political problem is this: how long will the mass of Americans accept not only an economic crisis bringing unemployment, home foreclosures, reduced real wages and job benefits, but now also cutbacks in government supports? » There have been three days of riots in and around London over the shooting of a 29 year old African-British father of four in Tottenham. Buses and building have been burned, stores looted, and all the police can do is issue empty statements saying they'll look into the cause and call the rioters "Copycats and Criminals". Sure. Some. There always are. But there are also massive numbers of impoverished and disenfranchised youths and adults around the city as well. The police nor any authority seems to care to address THAT issue.

London riots: Looting and violence continues
Police have condemned a wave of "copycat criminal activity" across London in a second night of looting and disorder following riots in Tottenham.
More than 100 people have been arrested as officers were attacked, police vehicles damaged and shops looted.
Disorder spread to Enfield, Walthamstow and Waltham Forest in north London and to Brixton in the south of the city.

» Things have NOT gone well over the weekend on the global financial markets. Congress thought it did the job with their dysfunctional debt limit bill but the REST of the world thought otherwise. Meanwhile, Standards and Poors and Moody's financial rating agencies lowered the credit rating of US debt.
The reaction to all this is the price of gold went up fifty dollars over the weekend to about $1700 an ounce and S&P's/Moody's actions are still rolling across global trading floors with the Dow already down 200 points today. LONDON (AP) -- Police deployed extra officers on London's streets to prevent a repeat of the rioting and looting in a deprived area amid community anger over a fatal police shooting, as new disturbances broke out in another district of the city late Sunday.
A peaceful protest against the killing of the 29-year-old man in north London's Tottenham area degenerated into a Saturday night rampage, with rioters torching a double-decker bus, destroying patrol cars and trashing a shopping mall in the nearby Wood Green district.
Disturbances broke out late Sunday in Enfield, about 5 miles (8 kilometers) north of Tottenham. TV footage showed riot and mounted police patrolling the streets, and there were also images of smashed shop windows, and police with dogs detaining at least one man.
There were also reports that a police car was vandalized in Enfield. Sky News television reported that several hundred young people were on the streets causing trouble...

The majority of arrests were for burglary; other offenses included violent disorder, robbery, theft and handling of stolen goods.

Yesterday the global financial markets took a header and it's all being blamed on European nations not having had enough money to bail each other out. As the markets stagger back this morning the job numbers came in with a 1/10 of 1% rise in employment. NOT a recovery.
Paul Krugman @ the New York Times put it this way:
"Consider one crucial measure, the ratio of employment to population. In June 2007, around 63 percent of adults were employed. In June 2009, the official end of the recession, that number was down to 59.4. As of June 2011, two years into the alleged recovery, the number was: 58.2." This rate of job growth is below the 90,000 a month needed to keep pace with the growth of the labor force. Consistent with this fact, the employment-to-population ratio (EPOP) fell slightly to 58.1 percent, tying its previous low for the downturn. While the unemployment rate edged down to 9.1 percent, this was entirely attributable to people leaving the labor force... [Full Analysis]
Wall Street suffers worst selloff in two years

By Angela Moon
NEW YORK Thu Aug 4, 2011(Reuters) - Investors fled Wall Street in the worst stock-market selloff since the middle of the financial crisis in early 2009 in what has turned into a full-fledged correction.
The Dow and the S&P tumbled more than 4 percent on Thursday and the Nasdaq lost 5 percent on fear the United States is staring at another recession and that Europe's sovereign debt crisis is swallowing two of its largest economies.
Analysts predicted further losses even though stocks have fallen on nine of the last 10 days. Two-year Treasury yields fell to a record low as investors sought safety in short-term government bonds.
"People are throwing in the towel because they can't find relief on any front," said Milton Ezrati, market strategist at Lord Abbett Co. in Jersey City, New Jersey, which manages $110 billion in assets.

A rebel spokesman claimed that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's youngest son Khamis was killed in a NATO airstrike on the Western town of Zlitan.

8 Reasons Young Americans Don't Fight Back: How the US Crushed Youth Resistance
The ruling elite has created social institutions that have subdued young Americans and broken their spirit of resistance.
July 31, 2011
Traditionally, young people have energized democratic movements. So it is a major coup for the ruling elite to have created societal institutions that have subdued young Americans and broken their spirit of resistance to domination.
Young Americans—even more so than older Americans—appear to have acquiesced to the idea that the corporatocracy can completely screw them and that they are helpless to do anything about it. A 2010 Gallup poll asked Americans “Do you think the Social Security system will be able to pay you a benefit when you retire?” Among 18- to 34-years-olds, 76 percent of them said no.
Yet despite their lack of confidence in the availability of Social Security for them, few have demanded it be shored up by more fairly payroll-taxing the wealthy; most appear resigned to having more money deducted from their paychecks for Social Security, even though they don’t believe it will be around to benefit them.
How exactly has American society subdued young Americans?
o
o
o
4. “No Child Left Behind” and “Race to the Top.”
The corporatocracy has figured out a way to make our already authoritarian schools even more authoritarian. Democrat-Republican bipartisanship has resulted in wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, NAFTA, the PATRIOT Act, the War on Drugs, the Wall Street bailout, and educational policies such as “No Child Left Behind” and “Race to the Top.”
These policies are essentially standardized-testing tyranny that creates fear, which is antithetical to education for a democratic society. Fear forces students and teachers to constantly focus on the demands of test creators; it crushes curiosity, critical thinking, questioning authority, and challenging and resisting illegitimate authority.
In a more democratic and less authoritarian society, one would evaluate the effectiveness of a teacher not by corporatocracy-sanctioned standardized tests but by asking students, parents, and a community if a teacher is inspiring students to be more curious, to read more, to learn independently, to enjoy thinking critically, to question authorities, and to challenge illegitimate authorities. » For thirty five thousand dollars a plate it better be some gooooood "Rubber Chicken" - President Obama, whose fiftieth birthday is today, celebrated last night in Chicago with appearances by Jennifer Hudson and entertainment by Herbie Hancock among others. The birthday boy made a couple of long speeches as well. Now he's back to Washington, where things aren't so celebratory. More.
» To wit... Because congress left town on an ill-deserved summer recess without doing their job, the FAA was left without a budget for infrastructure maintenance contractors and other government employed workers OSTENSIBLY due to a dispute over unionization. That means seventy thousand FAA employees alone face a layoff, which would cripple the US air transportation industry. But it turns out congress isn't REALLY in recess technically and there's a push to call at least a quorum back into session for a few hours to hash out a short term extension. Expect resistance. The strategy of the West was simple: take advantage of Libya’s normalization and economic opening to form a class of ’golden boy’ technocrats that would end up preferring the American Way of Life to Gaddafi’s Green Book.
As soon as this process reached maturity, the CIA organized the Benghazi events and the media distortion campaign. With their humanitarian discourse, the French and British were placed in the forefront to provide cannon fodder in the case of an eventual ground action. The National Transitional Council was put together by retrieving Americanized members of the ruling class, with the addition of old expatriates sponsored by the CIA ever since the fall of the monarchy, plus Al Qaeda fighters overseen by a Saudi faction.
Although seemingly a mixed bag, this coalition is based on the common history of its individual members. Most have worked for the United States for many years and have switched political affiliation several times over in keeping with Washington’s tactical interests ...
... To carry out this color insurrection, Washington had only one card to play: the corruption of one of Muammar Gaddafi’s companions, Interior Minister General Abdel Fatah Younes. His volte face was the cue for converting the ongoing the political destabilization operation into a military adventure. But, the assassination of General Younes at the hands of his rivals, on 28 July 2011, has caused the collapse of the "rebel army", thereby revealing the artificiality of the National Transitional Council.[Dispatch From Libya In Full]

Service sector growth slowest since 2010Ahem... yes... and we can only hope our hypothetical friend above finds their own 'soft patch'... of grass to sleep on, or else cardboard and a doorway it is!
NEW YORK Wed Aug 3, 2011
(Reuters) - The pace of growth in the services sector ticked down unexpectedly in July to the lowest level since February 2010 and the number of jobs created by the private sector also slowed, reports showed on Wednesday.
Taken alongside disappointing data on the manufacturing sector earlier in the week, the services data showed an economy that was frustrating hopes for a rebound in the second half of the year after a very weak first half.
"It looks like this confirms that we are in a bit of a soft patch here," [More Gloom... You'll WISH for Doom]
But at least our friend will eat... as a homeless person who can't store food in bulk.... for about 3 of the 4 weeks in any month, with their Food Stamp 'Benefits'. However our not-so-mythical friend better be prepared to pack up early and find a bush to stash their stuff in though, because the USDA and federal government make you do an intensive job search if you need those 'benefits'... and right now, many Americans DO need them:
Which leaves us with the Quote of the Day:
"Four score and a hundred and fifty years ago Our forefathers made us equal as long as we can pay Yeah, well maybe that wasn't exactly what they was thinkin' Version six-point-o of the American way But hey we can just build a great wall Around the country club To keep the riff-raff out until the slump is through I realize that ain't exactly democratic But it's either them or us And it's the best we can do." ~~Steve Earle, Amerika V. 6.0

» The Senate went ahead 74-26 and passed the debt limit bill and then they went home to explain to their constituents why they left the FAA without a budget and appropriations to run the federal government for next year undone along with ANOTHER crisis.
Ezra Klein @ the Washington Post's WonkBook:
The primary problem the debt deal will solve was a problem Congress had created for itself. But perhaps there was some relief in concocting a crisis we could actually solve. Because now that it's done and we have almost finished pating(sic) ourselves on the back for, as the Onion put it, achieving "the not-so-great things that can happen in Washington when both parties barely come together and agree to not really accomplish anything," we're left with the problems we do have, and can't seem to solve. We're left with the jobs crisis.[More]» In Syria the government continues to attack the city of Hama among other places with foreign fighters coming into the country to assist the rebels and reports of Iraqi supplied weapons in rebel hands. There has been footage released of Syrian rebels killing alleged government intelligence agents and throwing them in a river. If you're waiting for Arab League intervention, don't hold your breath. The same at the UN where China is threatening a veto.
Equal time... In case you've been watching in disgust or horror as Syria attempts to quell a rebellion in their country (Which many people say is Western fomented) using military troops... They're not the only ones.
But the other country you aren't hearing about is an ostensible US ally:
At least 11 more people have been killed in the past 24 hours in Karachi, and the paramilitary Frontier Corps have been given police powers in the city to help stamp out violence, powers already granted to the paramilitary Rangers (Dawn, AFP, ET, DT, Dawn, NYT, AJE, Dawn, Tel). The Tribune reports that the Rangers appear to be gearing up for an offensive to clear certain areas in Karachi, while Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) head Altaf Hussein said Tuesday that the attacks could become a "massacre or ethnic cleansing" (ET, ET, Dawn, DT). Violence has also reportedly broken out in the Surjani area of Karachi between ethnic Pashtuns and and ethnic Seraikis (ET). "The AP has a must-read detailing the strain caused by the timing of U.S. drone strikes in Pakistan, not just between the United States and Pakistan, but also between the CIA, who carry out the strikes, and the U.S. State Department (AP).» Remember the fellow who threw the pie at Rupert Murdoch during the British Parliamentary hearings on News of the World's hacking into a murdered girls email account and voicemails? He just received a 60 day sentence... Light by US standards.
The report tells the story of a frantic call from U.S. ambassador to Islamabad Cameron Munter, who must approve all drone strikes, to the CIA in an attempt to avert an imminent strike on March 17. That attack took place a day after CIA contractor Raymond Davis was freed from Pakistani custody, but CIA director Leon Panetta reportedly overruled Munter.
An anonymous official said the strike, which Pakistan alleges killed up to 38 civilians, went forward because, "[the attack] was in retaliation for Davis...The CIA was angry." [Also @ Foreign Policy]

I am worried, however, about the future of our empire. Thanks to the Agency, I’ve been able to travel the world, meet thousands of interesting people, and help subvert their governments. "A properly functioning system of indoctrination has a variety of tasks. Its primary target are the 'stupid and ignorant masses'. They must be kept that way; marginalized, and isolated. Ideally, each person should be alone in front of the TV screen watching sports, soap operas, or comedies, deprived of organizational structures that permit individuals lacking resources to discover what they think and believe in, to engage in interaction with others, to formulate their own concerns and programs, and to act to realize them.
This hapless multitude are the proper targets of the mass media and a public education system geared to obedience and training in needed skills, including the skill of repeating patriotic slogans on timely occasions." ~~Noam Chomsky

» Last night the House passed the bill to raise the debt limit. Now there will be ninety days of meetings by twelve "selected" senators and congresspeople to work out the details to be delivered before Christmas or else... ?
Ezra Klein @ the Washington Post's WonkBook:
It's not just that Congress waited until the last minute, taking an unnecessary risk in a fragile economy. And it's not just that the tough decisions got punted once again. This is a bad bill at a time when the economy -- and the American people -- needed a good one. It's a bill that does too little now, and too little later, and it comes in lieu of an obvious, achievable solution that would have done better.Economist Paul Krugman put it more succinctly and draws a much more severe conclusion:
But with the details understood and the legislation on its way to a quick approval in the Senate, it's worth stepping back and saying what we all already know: This is a terrible, no-good, very bad deal... [Read On]

Within 24 hours, the Senate will follow the House’s lead — passing the compromise deal to raise the debt ceiling and heading out of town for its month-long August recess.More in the commentary.
The August recess is not only the longest break Congress takes all year, but also its most important, as members spend extended time in their district and the political media searches for emerging storylines.

It may be that the Taliban is attempting to open a supply route through Uzbekistan, circumventing the less-porous-than-it-used-to-be Pakistan border. More at Foreign Policy's AfPak 'Channel'.

(The proposed rules as a direct PDF download from Cryptome.org are here) It also commonly used as a 'low' explosive by farmers for tree stump removal and the mining/quarry industry. This clampdown was supposed to have happened a number of years ago but farming and mining industry lobbying prevented it. Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the commentary audio files.
Due To technical difficulties that you will hear in the commentary, KPIG did not air the morning news. Some (controlled) audio feedback is apparent in the commentary. Hopefully the problem will be squared away before long.
