In The News:

Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the news and commentary audio files.

In light of the commentary... a couple of money quotes that may help some folks understand the similarity of circumstances between then (Detroit 1967, Newark NJ, Harlem NY...) and now:
"(Reuters) - Anger at high unemployment and cuts in public services, coupled with resentment of the police, contributed to an explosion of violence and looting..." (src)

"Tottenham is an area of mostly poor minorities; a significant portion of the population is black. “How many black people have to die around here?” one of the youths, referring to Mr. Duggan. He would only give his name as Pablo. “I hate the police,” he said." (src)
More in yesterday's news report (@ Razed By Wolves) where you'll also find an interview with a Tottenham London community activist on the topic and much more.

» It's just like Television... Someone rates this stuff. Yesterday the Dow fell 634 points. For every stock that rose at the New York Stock Exchange, more than 69 fell. Gold ended at $1,720 and Silver made it to $39. Meanwhile the Republicans are screaming for the president to produce a plan, but in reality congress makes the 'plan' (hence the problem, S&P and Moody's didn't care for their plan, calculated to resolve a little over half the FOUR TRILLION dollar debt, and rammed it through so they wouldn't be required to show everyone their corrupt sides during next year's presidential election cycle) and the president executes it. Also, Secretary of the Treasury Geithner who has been dunned by the Republicans to resign, said he's not going anywhere.

Standards & Poors elaborates on their reason for downgrading US debt obligations:
“We have changed our assumption on this because the majority of Republicans in Congress continue to resist any measure that would raise revenues, a position we believe Congress reinforced by passing the act.” — Page 4, Standard & Poors Research Update, August 5, 2011
S&P Insists US on Bi-party’s Cooperation to Overcome Debt Issues

S&P Sovereign Debt Committee Chairman, John Chambers told that US lawmakers of both Democrat and Republican parties work together to confront the nation debt issues and turn the nation towards the progressive economic path as it was did in 1980 to overhaul the factors which had the US economy into critical position by a strong compromise and firm cooperation of both parties. This is a main problem that has to be concentrated by US law makers, without any political motive, to overcome the financial crisis and regain the status AAA as a risk free borrower in Standard & Poor rating list.

As you have enacted a bill in the floor of the Congress on eleventh hour of deadline to save only around $2.1 trillion instead of #4 trillion, you have done a part of job to overcome the nation’s debt burden not a full of it. Five governments have regained their AAA status after losing it, it has taken them between 9 to 18 years to get it back. Generally one loses its rank AAA, cannot get it immediately, said S&P Debt Committee Chairman, Chamber. [In Full]

S&P downgraded the US national debt because these economic and political dimensions (see the rest of the article) of the US today guarantee a worsening of the nation's debt. Thus, a basically political problem is looming for those lenders who purchased and now own the debt obligations of the US (i.e. Treasury securities). The political problem is this: how long will the mass of Americans accept not only an economic crisis bringing unemployment, home foreclosures, reduced real wages and job benefits, but now also cutbacks in government supports? » Today is recall election day in Wisconsin for six Republican state senators. If three end up being replaced the state's laborers will be in a good position to take the governor and mop the factory floor with him for attempting to eliminate collective bargaining rights for unions in the state. Ohio, Pennsylvania, and a number of states face, or have faced similar strongarm legislation recently.

» When you arrest more than twelve hundred junior grade officers and issue six warrants for army generals and one for an admiral, there might have been a coup plot... against the government of Turkey. It was apparently being organized on FaceBook and other internet sites.

» There have been three days of riots in and around London over the shooting of a 29 year old African-British father of four in Tottenham. Buses and building have been burned, stores looted, and all the police can do is issue empty statements saying they'll look into the cause and call the rioters "Copycats and Criminals". Sure. Some. There always are. But there are also massive numbers of impoverished and disenfranchised youths and adults around the city as well. The police nor any authority seems to care to address THAT issue.

London riots: Looting and violence continues

Police have condemned a wave of "copycat criminal activity" across London in a second night of looting and disorder following riots in Tottenham.

More than 100 people have been arrested as officers were attacked, police vehicles damaged and shops looted.

Disorder spread to Enfield, Walthamstow and Waltham Forest in north London and to Brixton in the south of the city.

Home Secretary Teresa May has cut short her holiday to return to the UK following the disorder... [Continued]

From Foreign Policy Magazine' AfPak Channel; The Big Fool said We'll 'Press On':
In televised remarks following the downing of a CH-47 helicopter carrying 30 U.S. troops Saturday, including elite Navy SEALs as well as eight Afghans, President Barack Obama yesterday promised to "press on" in Afghanistan, while a Pentagon spokesman said the helicopter's destruction, believed to have been caused by a rocket-propelled grenade, "does not represent any kind of watershed or trend" (Reuters, AP, AFP, BBC, Bloomberg).

Last but not least, the House of Representatives ends a longstanding program in civics... Since they're not particularly 'civil' anyway, as seen recently in the debt ceiling brouha, it's all just as well because it will assuredly save some innocent kids from this fate, typical to children alone, around predators:
In 1983, two lawmakers were censured by the House of Representatives for having sexual relationships with teenage pages. Rep. Dan Crane, R-Ill., admitted to sexual relations with a 17-year-old female page, while Rep. Gerry Studds, D-Mass., admitted to sexual relations with a 17-year-old male page. House leaders end page program

By Molly K. Hooper

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced their joint decision to end the House page program.

As of August 31, 2011, the program - that employs nearly 70 high school students to serve as messengers and couriers on the House floor and around the Capitol complex - will be no more, according to a joint statement issued late Monday afternoon. [More]
