It's the "Day of Departure" in Cairo Egypt... There are currently a quarter to a half million people in Tahrir (Freedom) Square waiting to march on the presidential palace and attempt to physically remove Hosni Mubarak from office. Ostensibly two million people are expected to join in, perhaps including a large number of provocateurs and thugs from the NDP, the president's political party, who have been attacking the protesters over the last few days with everything from camel charges to Molotov Cocktails.

Expect violence now that the media has been pretty much driven from the streets by thugs who had been targeting them, and many journalists are working out of nearby countries now.

The US government has advised Egypt's Mubarak to step down, and quickly. The Pentagon has been consulting with the Egyptian army (the REAL POWER in Egypt with whom their Pentagon counterparts train quite regularly) with the simple request that their commanders consider whether they'd be better off without the current regime.

Yesterday there were reports that:
"...the Saudi government suggesting that King Abd'allah, who is now in Morocco, has convinced President Mubarak to step down to avoid a possible bloodbath during anticipated massive demonstrations on Friday. Abd'allah has also reportedly offered Mubarak asylum in Saudi Arabia," [Source]
...As of now it has not come to pass...
But it WILL!

A Norwegian legislator has suggested that Julian Assange of Wikileaks be given the Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution to freedom of speech and freedom of the press. Considering the current Nobel Laureate is imprisoned in China it might be apropos to what might happen if the U.S. managed to put Assange on trial for the ongoing release of US government papers showing just how corrupt US diplomatic staff and American diplomacy can be, and exactly how murderous our wars are.

Algeria has lifted it's nine (Correction... NINETEEN) year old state of emergency, put in place after conservative Islamic elements won the elections to prevent them from taking power. Now the government of Algeria say elections will be held soon.

This is likely due to the Algerian government's careful observation of what has happened in neighboring Tunisia where the government fell under mass protests, and what is currently happening in Egypt.

The Republicans are requesting a $38 billion dollar cut for the seven months remaining in the proposed continuing budget resolution for 2010. Last year's budget is currently operational and causing economic mayhem for some needy Americans... and not the normal cohort who would be affected:
Federal Homelessness Program Runs Out Of Money As Need Rises

WASHINGTON -- Homelessness has significantly risen in the U.S. as a result of surging foreclosures and joblessness caused by the recession, but a new federal program designed to nudge people back from the brink of life without shelter is on the brink itself.

A new report, released by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty on Jan. 26, found that a homelessness prevention and re-housing program funded by the 2009 stimulus bill needs more money to meet rising need. Instead, the program will likely be left out of the new federal budget.

In response to the 20 percent increase in foreclosures that occurred from 2008 to 2009, the Department of Housing and Urban Development used $1.5 billion in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to create the Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-Housing Program (HPRP), which helps keep people in their apartments by subsidizing their rent.

The program is quickly running out of money, however, and having a number of administrative difficulties trying to keep up with demand. In Detroit, for instance, about 50,000 people filled out applications for only 3,500 grants on the first day the money was available, and a number of major U.S. cities have already used up more than 80 percent of their allotted funds, which were supposed to last until 2012." Although this affects the "de-housed due to mortgage problems and job-downsizing" population, not the chronically homeless it STILL creates a problem for the terminally houseless as the nuevo homeless compete for resources like cardboard boxes and dumpsters to dive (snicker...)

The huge ice storm passing through the midwest has dumped five inches of snow on Dallas Texas (!) and disrupted travel across region. There's also been major damage in Queensland Australia from a massive Cyclone (the term for 'Hurricane' in the Southern hemisphere) but fortunately there have been no reports of casualties.
