A slowly unraveling disaster... That's what the BP/Horizon Oil Drilling Rig explosion, sinking, and spill is. The first of the spill is beginning to reach the barrier islands. There are calming words in the media that spill control technology has improved since the Exxon Valdez disaster (Exxon btw, won their appeal in court regarding damages caused by the Valdez spill. BIGPetro doesn't pay damages...) The state of Louisiana has declared a state of emergency and the US military is on the scene.
Just for the record, President Obama on the topic of offshore drilling:
"Oil Rigs Today Generally Don’t Cause Spills"
What a difference 18 days makes. Here was Barack Obama, on April 2, before the BP oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, claiming that oil rigs are safe to justify his position on offshore drilling:Juan Cole @ Informed Comment does the number crunching: "BP’s first-quarter profits this year, by the way, rose to $6.1 billion from $2.6 billion in 2009."I don’t agree with the notion that we shouldn’t do anything. It turns out, by the way, that oil rigs today generally don’t cause spills. They are technologically very advanced. Even during Katrina, the spills didn’t come from the oil rigs, they came from the refineries onshore. Not only does this quote look ridiculous in hindsight, it wasn’t true at the time, as Brad Johnson points out:Obama’s claim that oil rigs did not cause any spills during Hurricane Katrina is simply false, as the Wonk Room reported in June, 2008, when Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and other conservatives made the same false claim:
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Caused 124 Offshore Spills For A Total Of 743,700 Gallons. 554,400 gallons were crude oil and condensate from platforms, rigs and pipelines, and 189,000 gallons were refined products from platforms and rigs. [MMS, 1/22/07]
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Caused Six Offshore Spills Of 42,000 Gallons Or Greater. The largest of these was 152,250 gallons, well over the 100,000 gallon threshold considered a “major spill.” [MMS, 5/1/06] In Full
Just thought you'd like to know that...
Yesterdays union organized protest on Wall Street went nearly un-noticed by Wall Street's brokers, but there IS a resonance with the American public:
The labor march near Wall Street, joined by religious and community groups as well as the president of the N.A.A.C.P, aimed to change the national discussion on banks so it focused not just on regulatory reform. Many speakers contended that the government should make financial firms pay for the damage they did to the economy.
“People in New York and across the country who did nothing wrong and want to work have paid for the misdeeds of the big banks with their jobs, homes and retirement savings,” said Richard Trumka, the A.F.L.-C.I.O. president. In Full
The "Tea Party" has essentially forced the Republican governor of the state of Florida out of the Republican fold. There will now be a three way race with governor Crist running as an independent.
The House of Representatives is going to allow Puerto Rico to vote on their status as nation or state. In the first voting round the question will be do they want to change? If the answer is yes the next round will decide on Independence, territory, or 'loose affiliation' a la Saipan and the other sweatshop islands
The Belgian Burka law is about to go into effect even as Belgium's government faces an uncertain future following the fall of the government on April 22... and Muslim women will probably be out on the streets to protest.

ACLU to Obama: "Entire World is not a War Zone" - stop Program of Targeted Killing
Thursday, 29 April 2010
Various media reports and the obvious increase of drone missile attacks since the beginning of the Obama administration make it clear that the U.S. is engaged in an illegal assassination program throughout the world. Anyone’s name, including the names of American citizens, can be added to these extrajudicial kill lists, without any legal due process. These killings violate international law and the U.S. Constitution. But in its war of terror on the world, laws and even basic morality are routinely brushed aside by the U.S. imperialists.
On April 28th, the American Civil Liberties Union today sent a letter to President Barack Obama regarding his assassination program.
