Why Is the Military Infringing on Obama's Decison-Making Turf? By David Sirota

In The News: In the Afghan province of Nuristan, a company sized group of Taliban soldiers attacks two bases manned by US and Afghan soldiers killing eight and wounding twenty five. The raiders got "inside the wire" on both bases. Three weeks ago General McChrystal's staff stated it was going to pull back the bulk of troops from the hinterlands of Afghanistan and begin creating "development programs" instead. Not soon enough on the 'pullback' for the Taliban apparently.

8 US troops Killed in Nuristan;
UN Official Says He was Pressured to Wink at Karzai Ballot Fraud;
Abdullah Defiant

On Saturday morning, a force of some 300 guerrillas attacked a US outpost and an Afghan police outpost in Nuristan. They killed 8 US troops and two Afghan police, but failed to overwhelm the bastions, and had to withdraw in the face of withering US air power once it arrived. Some of the fighters are reported by Dawn to have been driven from the Swat Valley this summer by the Pakistani army. It is a worry that as the Pakistani military prepares for a major campaign in South Waziristan, it may inadvertently increase violence in Afghanistan, as the fighters move up to Helmand and Uruzgan.

On Monday morning, Taliban blew up a bomb in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad near the World Food Program offices. Early reports said at least three people were killed. The Taliban have suffered many reversals in Pakistan in the past few months, and this bombing seems likely an expression of frustration and revenge.

Will Obama take General McChrystal's recommendations? Two more meetings are planned this week inclusive of the congressional players and all other significant parties in the US government (note that the 'experts' mentioned in this CNN article are just 'insider' 'experts'). Meanwhile, The Rethuglicans are whining that Obama is not immediately doing what the McChrystal sitrep on Afghanistan requests. Their priorities,... their friends and investments in the Military Industrial Complex, are showing.

In Pakistan where the US launched a number of drone strikes a few weeks ago taking out the leader of their Taliban, we tried it on the new leader shortly thereafter and we missed. He vowed revenge against the US AND the Pakistani governments. Now he has 'delivered'... A suicide bomber disguised as a security officer blew himself up in the lobby of the UN food aid program's office in Islamabad, killing five.

Iranians and their "Uraniums" - They and the Russians are about to sign a deal which will send their spent nuclear material to Russia and perhaps France for recycling-and-return to Iran as power plant material. More at PRESS-TV, Iran.

MEANWHILE... The US media is finding NEW ways to demonize Iran.

Scary news article…

…not the content, the article itself. The NYT is pushing for war… Iraq redux.

Damn. I guess they need to sell more papers.

Report Says Iran Has Data to Make a Nuclear Bomb

By WILLIAM J. BROAD and DAVID E. SANGER
Published: October 3, 2009

Senior staff members of the United Nations nuclear agency have concluded in a confidential analysis that Iran has acquired “sufficient information to be able to design and produce a workable” atom bomb.

The report by experts in the International Atomic Energy Agency stresses in its introduction that its conclusions are tentative and subject to further confirmation of the evidence, which it says came from intelligence agencies and its own investigations.

But the report’s conclusions, described by senior European officials, go well beyond the public positions taken by several governments, including the United States.

Two years ago, American intelligence agencies published a detailed report concluding that Tehran halted its efforts to design… [In Full]
It's notable that a magazine (I believe the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists) published a 'How to make your own nuclear bomb' article over a decade ago, and the 'bomb' was designed by a young American man who had NO access to ANY 'data'. So simple a High School/College kid can design one. Getting the materials (not all 'nuclear'... the GIANT capacitor that detonates the device is not an off-the-electronics-store-shelf item...) is another matter. Here's a SoftPedia article called "How To Make An Atomic Bomb".

The Supreme Court is going to re-visit their recent ruling (June '09) that struck down a ban on handguns in Washington, D.C. as to whether it's a 'broad ruling' that will apply to other cities... in this case, Chicago. They will also hear a case on corporate political campaign contributions. "The conservatives (on the USSC bench) appeared ready to rule that corporate spending limits for federal campaigns violated the free-speech rights of businesses."

Vaccinations specifically for Swine Flu will be available beginning this week if you need them.

From Wikipedia, on the 1976 Swine Flu outbreak:
There were reports of Guillain-Barré syndrome, a paralyzing neuromuscular disorder, affecting some people who had received swine flu immunizations. This syndrome is a rare side-effect of modern influenza vaccines, with an incidence of about one case per million vaccinations.[30] As a result, Di Justo writes that "the public refused to trust a government-operated health program that killed old people and crippled young people." In total, 48,161,019 Americans, or just over 22% of the population, had been immunized by the time the National Influenza Immunization Program (NIIP) was effectively halted on December 16, 1976.[31] [32]
Overall, there were 1098 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) recorded nationwide by CDC surveillance, 532 of which were linked to the NIIP vaccination, resulting in death from severe pulmonary complications for 25 people, which, according to Dr. P. Haber, were probably caused by an immunopathological reaction to the 1976 vaccine. Other influenza vaccines have not been linked to GBS, though caution is advised for certain individuals, particularly those with a history of GBS. [33] [34][35] Still, as observed by a participant in the immunization program, the vaccine killed more Americans than the disease did.[36] [In Full, with links]
