Things in Haiti are starting to sort themselves out as people begin to flee Port au Prince into the countryside. That IS a good thing in one way, and a bad thing in another... especially if there are any 'disturbances' on the island when the citizns find out the US is preventing the return of the last Haitian president we kidnapped, Jean Bertrand Aristede. Can you say "Bands of guerrillas in the mountains" similar to Fidel's merry band of revolutionaries? The comparison IS apt because if Fidel had not turned the situation in Cuba around, Cuba would have ended up very much like Haiti. There is no way of knowing if the conditions ARE ripe for such a rebellion on Haiti, but it IS notable. It's also notable The UN Security Council has authorized sending 2000 more troops to the island as if 10,000 US troops were not enough to 'secure' the island. More in the commentary.

As a matter of fact, there is no reference whatsoever to "Operation Enduring Freedom Caribbean and Central America" that he speaks of ANYWHERE on the Washington Post site or a quick Google NEWS search, although a general Google search turned up some interesting goodies such as USSOUTHCOM Posture 2008 House and Senate Armed Services Committee testimony, and here is a write up on that testimony from Caribbean 360 news service "US Admiral says Caribbean possible terrorist threat".
The anti-terrorism operation, according to William Arkin of the Post, is stationed at Homestead AFB, current center of US "relief" operations for Haiti.
Working for U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), SOD-G is moving to an airbase in Homestead, Fla., where it will take up contingency counter-terrorism planning responsibilities for the region, seeking to characterize how al Qaeda and other terrorists might exploit drug trafficking routes and patterns or other gaps in American defense to infiltrate into the United States.So how long could it be until the US finds "al Qaeda on Haiti"?

There was $10 million dollar spent in the last week of the race alone. If the race goes to the Republican contender, expect senatorial deadlock for the rest of Obama's first term, an administration at it lowest popularity rating ever right now. His first term could very well end up being his only term.

The California Highway Patrol says the man involved in a shootout Saturday night was on his way to San Francisco with weapons in an apparent plan to assassinate ACLU and the liberal Tides Foundation's members in an attempt "start a revolution", even as the Tea Party Caucus opens on Capitol Hill represented by Michele Bachman and 13 of her friends.
The Unemployment Benefits extension bill WAS delayed by Republican filibuster and a $25 per week increase has been stripped from it, so SOMETHING is happening and action is expected today. The bill, which would stabilize the incomes of large numbers of unemployed American workers currently has a $32 billion dollar price tag and despite that huge sum, will run out at the beginning of December.
Afghanistan's president Karzai says his country will be prepared to provide it's own security by 2014 and then the West can "go home". More.
The Senate Judiciary Committee approves of Elana Kagan's nomination for US Supreme Court and a Senate vote is hoped for before the beginning of August.
The Senate is also getting to work on the nomination of General Clapper for Director of National Intelligence even as the Washington Post goes into great detail about the problems with privatized outsourcing of intelligence... as reported on Monday, "The Washington Post's Dana Priest and William M. Peace Camp demonstration enters third week on courthouse steps as county officials weigh their options

SANTA CRUZ -- Four people sit together playing bongos and a tambourine while a puppy lounges nearby.
A man wearing a bolo hat rollerblades in tight circles as tie-dyed fabric hanging from a tree flutters in the breeze.
Several people tucked into sleeping bags snooze, but the man who hung his hammock from the handrail has taken off.
No, it's not a summer music festival. This was the scene in front of the Santa Cruz County Superior Courthouse just before noon Tuesday, where demonstrators have been sleeping nightly since the Fourth of July to protest the city's camping ordinance in what they call Peace Camp 2010.
"This is a humanitarian issue," said Christopher Doyon, a 45-year-old homeless man who has been participating in the protest for about two weeks. "Folks have a right to sleep."
Demonstrators are protesting the city's camping law, which prohibits sleeping outside between 11 p.m. and 8:30 a.m. But the protest is squarely on county property and county code does not list the courthouse property among locations designated as no-camping zones like Paradise Park and Carbonera Creek.
Although the city's "sleeping ban," as opponents have dubbed it, has been a point of contention for years, frustrations hit a high mark earlier this summer when police said a man set fire to the city attorney's office because of the law. The city also is pursuing a permanent injunction against a homeless couple repeatedly ticketed for camping downtown.
A measure recently approved by the City Council allows the city attorney to increase ignored municipal code citations to misdemeanors.
But more than two weeks into the demonstration, city police have taken no action and don't intend to, unless the protest moves off county property, Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Rick Martinez said.
So the so-called Peace Camp, which includes 30-50 campers a night, presents a conundrum for city and county officials.
Some would like to see demonstrators move on. For example, court spokesman Tim Newman said the protest hasn't caused problems for the county court branch, but he was concerned campers may have impeded people's ability to access the local justice system.
However, in the 17 days since the protest began, the campers haven't caused significant problems. Trash cans fill up faster and sometimes the aroma of marijuana floats through the air, but the camp has its own portable toilet to mitigate issues with human waste, officials said.
"It looks like a slumber party," said county spokeswoman Dinah Phillips, who can see the protest from the window of her office in the county building... [In Full]

Looking for "al Qaeda on Haiti" no doubt... CIA Contractor Drone Over Haiti
"Following the money" for US government Haiti Disaster Relief operations.
Evergreen International Aviation... They do the 'logistics' end of CIA 'renditions' and have a long history of covert ops for the CIA and Pentagon. The Wired article fleshes(sic) it out..
A controversial CIA contractor has found new work in Haiti, flying drones on disaster recovery duty.
When last we heard from Evergreen International Aviation, the Oregon-based firm was offering to post sentries at local voting centers during the 2008 election, ”detaining troublemakers” and making sure voters “do not get out of control.”
Now, company vice president Sam White tells Aviation Week that the firm is flying at least one ScanEagle surveillance drone over Haiti. ”The company has a fleet of 747s and a fleet of large and small choppers, and has begun ferrying in supplies to Port au Prince,” the magazine’s Paul McLeary notes. “White wouldn’t say who the company is moving cargo for, saying only that ‘we’re working with different agencies, and we have one plane coming in tomorrow full of humanitarian supplies.’”
Over the years, Evergreen has had all sorts of interesting clients over its five-plus decades in operation. Back in the late ’80s, the company “acknowledged one agreement under which his companies provide occasional jobs and cover to foreign nationals the CIA wants taken out of other countries or brought into the United States.” In 2006, Evergreen’s parent company flew Bill O’Reilly into Kuwait in 2006, according toSourceWatch. Last April, the company won a $158 million contract to supply the Air Force with helicopters in Afghanistan.

Of course, it has generally been the HNP that has done assassinations, e.g. Abdias Jean, (with MINUSTAH - after MINUSTAH assassinated Dred Wilme in Cite Soleil (early 07/lat 06, if memory serves), kidnappings there went up according to the economist, although they don’t tie the matter to the murder, even though MINUSTAH had been accusing Dred Wilme of being behind the kidnappings), and Lavalas has accused them of beheadings. Haiti is a nation under economic and military siege that has changed dramatically for the worse under MINUSTAH and US OCCUPATION
When Jean-Bertrand Aristide came into power in a democratic election in 1991, the scene at his inauguration on February 7 went like this...

The final event of the festivities involved sharing the table with the poor.
Aristide’s first breakfast in the palace was not for visiting dignitaries, nor was it for the members of the local Lion’s Clubs: instead, he served breakfast to hundreds of street kids and homeless poor. “Do you feel at home?” asked Aristide, addressing himself to the large crowd. “Is the National Palace your home?”
“Today, I’m here to say to you that you are human beings just as important as anyone else. Rich and poor, we’re all people, and we must love one another. If there’s enough for the rich, then there must be enough for the poor, too. If the National Palace was formerly for the rich, today it’s for the poor.”
President Aristide wants to return from exile now, with the country that he governed until his literal kidnapping by the US in distress... and the US is not allowing it, as if the US should have any say in the matter whatsoever.
Haiti is INDEED an occupied country, and it's rankling other nations and first responders involved in the earthquake relief efforts.
Trinidad's press (a neighbor of Haiti) notes the US takeover of Haiti:
CARICOM BLOCKED...as US takes control of airport
THE CARIBBEAN Community's emergency aid mission to Haiti, comprising Heads of Government and leading technical officials, failed to secure permission Friday to land at that devastated country's airport, now under the control of the United States.
Consequently, the Caricom 'assessment mission', that was to determine priority humanitarian needs resulting from the mind-boggling earthquake disaster of Haiti last Tuesday, had to travel back from Jamaica to their respective home destinations.
On Friday afternoon the US State Department confirmed signing two 'Memoranda of Understanding' with the Government of Haiti that made 'official that the United State is in charge of all inbound and outbound flights and aid off-loading...' [In Full]
Meanwhile: A Cruise ship (Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines) docks at private beach in Haiti for barbeque and water sports
The Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines’ ship ‘Independence of the Seas’ went ahead with its scheduled stop at a fenced-in private Haitian beach surrounded by armed guards, leaving its passengers to “cut loose” on the beach, just a few kilometers from one of the worst humanitarian disasters in the region’s history. The ship’s owners justified it as a humanitarian call, because the ship also delivered 40 palettes of relief supplies while its passengers frolicked on zip-lines and ate barbeque within the 12-foot-high fence’s perimeter:
The Florida cruise company leases a picturesque wooded peninsula and its five pristine beaches from the government for passengers to “cut loose” with watersports, barbecues, and shopping for trinkets at a craft market before returning on board before dusk. Safety is guaranteed by armed guards at the gate.
The decision to go ahead with the visit has divided passengers. The ships carry some food aid, and the cruise line has pledged to donate all proceeds from the visit to help stricken Haitians. But many passengers will stay aboard when they dock; one said he was “sickened”.“I just can’t see myself sunning on the beach, playing in the water, eating a barbecue, and enjoying a cocktail while [in Port-au-Prince] there are tens of thousands of dead people being piled up on the streets, with the survivors stunned and looking for food and water,”one passenger wrote on the Cruise Critic internet forum. Fighting the War on Terror in the Caribbean and Central America
Here's an odd news story that puts meat on the bones of the phrase "global war on terror": The United States is fighting that war in the Caribbean and Central America.
My assumption was that "Operation Enduring Freedom -- Caribbean and Central America," a formal military operation I'd never heard of before yesterday, is oriented toward Cuba and Venezuela. But it is not. The U.S. military is indeed engaged in a global war, and the terrorist threat, at least in the eyes of the counter-terror warriors, extends to our backyard.
I don't know whether the actual threat necessitates such an "operation," but its bureaucratic existence says a lot about our overreliance on the military and the belief of many in government that the GWOT is a real war, equivalent to the Cold War, and is one that the United States should and will be fighting for decades.

The Rhode Island media this week was filled with the news that a unit of the state's National Guard, an organization called Special Operations Detachment -- Global (SOD-G), is deploying this week in support of something called Operation Enduring Freedom -- Caribbean and Central America.
Working for U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), SOD-G is moving to an airbase in Homestead, Fla., where it will take up contingency counter-terrorism planning responsibilities for the region, seeking to characterize how al Qaeda and other terrorists might exploit drug trafficking routes and patterns or other gaps in American defense to infiltrate into the United States.
