It's day four of protests in Bahrain with a couple of protesters killed in the last few days. Tanks have moved in attempting to squeeze the protesters out of the plaza but more protesters show up daily. The situation in Sanaa Yemen is tense with "Fierce Clashes" between protesters and government forces. Yemen's government may fall shortly... Yemen's clerics have demanded a transitional unity government.
And in Iraq... Remember Iraq? Totally stable until the West's 'coalition of the coerced' quasi-legal intervention, but in reality just a nasty war for extractive resources based solely on lies?
ReutersMeanwhile, the senior US officials allegedly duped-into-war-crimes try to take cover under a cloak of denial-of-responsibility. After all. Good ol' GW just found himself in that situation.
Three killed, dozens injured in Iraqi protests

KUT, Iraq (Reuters) - Three people were killed and dozens wounded in southern Iraq on Wednesday as protesters demanding better basic services fought with police and set government buildings on fire, hospital and police sources said.
Around 2,000 people took to the streets in the city of Kut, throwing bricks and stones at Iraqi security forces.
Some voiced direct anger at Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, echoing rallies that have shaken other parts of the Arab world.
"Down, down Maliki's government. Down, down with corruption. Down, down thieves," shouted 36-year-old teacher Ali Abdulla, who led a group of protesters and was bleeding from his head after clashing with police.
"We call for change. We will not stay silent anymore."
A police source in Kut said three protesters were killed in clashes and about 30 wounded, including 15 policemen. A hospital source at Kut's al-Abbas hospital said it had received around 28 wounded, including 15 policemen.
Protesters wielding sticks stormed the government and provincial council buildings and used burning pieces of cardboard to set fire to curtains in the two buildings.
Witnesses at the scene of the rally said some demonstrators also set the governor's house ablaze... [More @ Reuters]
AFPRead that last line again... The BND knew the information was unreliable and passed it on to the specific people with a vested interest in persecuting the war at the senior policy making level in US government who then bald-face lied about the 'indisputable' "evidence".
Colin Powell demands answers over false Iraq intel: reports
February 16 2011
LONDON (AFP) – Ex-secretary of state Colin Powell called on the CIA and Pentagon to explain how he was given unreliable information which proved key to the US case for invading Iraq, the Guardian reported Wednesday.
Powell's landmark speech to the United Nations on February 5, 2003, cited intelligence about Iraq leader Saddam Hussein's bioweapons programme gained from a defector, codenamed Curveball.
But he has now admitted that he lied to topple the dictator, in an interview with the Guardian.
"It has been known for several years that the source called Curveball was totally unreliable," Powell told the British newspaper.
"The question should be put to the CIA and the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency) as to why this wasn't known before the false information was put into the (report) sent to Congress, the president's state of the union address and my 5 February presentation to the UN."
The defector, real name Rafid Ahmed Alwan al-Janabi, told the Guardian that he lied to the BND, Germany's secret service, by claiming in 2000 that Iraq had mobile bioweapons trucks and had built clandestine factories.
During Powell's speech, Janabi was described as "an Iraqi chemical engineer" who "supervised one of these facilities."
"He actually was present during biological agent production runs and was also at the site when an accident occurred in 1998," Powell told the UN.
Janabi was exposed as an unreliable source when the BND visited Bassil Latif, his former boss at the Military Industries Commission in Iraq, who said there were no trucks or factories.
However, the BND continued to cooperate with the trained chemical engineer, and the false statements were eventually passed on to senior US policymakers by the intelligence services. [More @ Yahoo! News/AFP]
The Iranian government has canceled a request to traverse a couple of their warships through the Suez Canal (ALL warships are required to notify the Suez Canal authorities two days in advance) to take part in naval drills wth Syria after Israel declared that it would be a provocation.
In this country the House of Representatives is turning into a "freak show" as they try to monger together a continuing resolution to finance the US government through September by agreeing to cut the spare engine program for the F-35 'strike Fighter' and extra production in the C-17 'Globemaster' aircraft program. Now they'll attempt to cut the budgets of the National Public Broadcasting corporation, Women, Infants & Children program (WIC), the Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service land acquisition programs, trying to save $62 billion by March 3rd, even as work on THIS YEAR'S years budget looms large.
More in the commentary.
California is apparently going to get that High Speed Rail line from the federal Economic Stimulus program despite the fact that the six other states named refuse to participate.
A more "Buddhist" way to cut a budget... California governor Jerry Brown has asked all legislators to bring their "top ten candidates for budget cuts" to his office for consideration.

[After the commentary, a short primer explaining "How Your Model Government Works", courtesy of the respective artists.]
Uprisings are rising up all over the Middle East and North Africa... Cultural mores are coming into play as a funeral procession in Bahrain for a demonstrator killed the other day during a protest was interrupted by the police causing another melee. The king is promising reforms for the mostly Shiite (yet ruled by Sunni) majority as Saudi Arabia sends troops to a 'country' that never existed until an unknown British cartographer drew some lines on a map of the Middle East.
It's also the sixth day of protests in Yemen where there is almost no news about the situation due to the scarcity of internationally affiliated reporters. Algeria is also experiencing ongoing disturbances in the wake of the successful Egyptian/Tunisian revolutions.
Senator John Kerry is in Islamabad Pakistan attempting to extricate a consultant to the US embassy who shot someone he claimed was trying to mug him. The Pakistanis are not buying the diplomatic immunity status story for this guy and there are demonstrators demanding he hang now. Further, when US embassy "staff" tried to 'retrieve' him recently (This sounds like a JSOC "Snatch" operation), the truck they were in ran over a pedestrian causing not only an aborted mission, but further anger among the citizens of the country. There are billions of dollars in US foreign aid riding on this and other ongoing diplomatic problems (Drone attacks)... not that the Pakistani on the street has any problem discerning the crux of the issue... A survey last year showed that most Pakistanis DO NOT WANT our 'aid' and consider it an insult, and an imposition on their sovereignty.
The House has opened debate on the continuing resolution spending plan for 2011 which SHOULD HAVE been completed in the last legislative session and it needs to be done by the 3rd of March. But there are umn ...problems... House Speaker John Boehner, a rookie at running the show, and apparently without guidance (or just plain pig-headedness), allowed "Open Rules" which 'instantly' caused 445 amendments and counting to appear on the docket with only four scheduled for committees.
More on that topic in the commentary
But the Senate DIDN'T debate it at all before they passed the once-failed PATRIOT Act three month extension on a simple majority vote yesterday after it had failed last week when a 2/3 majority was required. Expect repression and you're NEVER disappointed!

Don't try this at home... It only works a couple of times - Iranians, Algerians, citizens of Yemen, and Bahrainians (!) take to the streets in varying degrees of revolt with varying amounts of suppression. More in the commentary.
In Mexico the police intelligence chief For Nuevo Leone has been assassinated as the war between the Gulf Cartel and Zetas continues. For a rather good (but violently imaged) sitrep, see this article at The Exiled, written by someone who knows... because he lives in the middle of it. He claims the Zetas are going to be the losers.
First, let’s go over what happened last year: 2010 was the bloodiest, most violent year in recent history in my home state of Nuevo Leon–Monterrey is the capital of this state, for you short-memoried gringos out there. Official figures estimate there’ve been around 700 deaths in the wars between cops and narcos, but knowing how the Zetas operate in this state it’s safe to say the real figure is at least double or triple that amount. The violence has only accelerated due to the ugly split between the big players—the Zetas and the Gulf Cartel–a break-up that’s dragged the entire state into in a war-like situation, in which every day the news was filled with stories of more shootouts, more executions, more kidnappings, more good ol’ family feuding between the two cartels. In Full, with CAVEAT, BRUTAL IMAGES
Argentina has seized a 1,000 square foot container full of US high-tech weapons and surveillance equipment from a shipment destined for US Special Forces soldiers known to be in-country training the Argentines in drug suppression and counter-terrorism. Apparently the Argentine authorities had not approved or expected this shipment... probably intended to 'stay behind', and perhaps even intended to serve another purpose at another time... to allow 'elements' of Argentina's military to destabilize and attack their own government. Just sayin'...
There are rumors of a WMD seizure at or around the port of San Diego according to an interview with one of the port's security directors. DHS will not confirm or deny that.
Yesterday women marched in Italy demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi after revelations that he was not only schtupping a 17 year old Morrocan dancer/prostitute, but when she got busted later, bailed her out with his signature.

Due To Time Constraints The News Synopsis Will Be Minimalist Today... Listen in for more.
The Egyptian army is dissolving the government and moving to remain in control for 6 months until promised elections. They have also moved to cut off the Mubarak regime and cronies attempt to loot the country's wealth. More.
In Algeria un-permitted protests have been shut down by a massive police presence, and Yemen is also experiencing street protests and unrest. Further:
A macabre joke making the rounds in Baghdad observes that if an Iraqi were to set himself on fire in a gesture of protest, as did the young Tunisian whose death sparked the Tunis uprising last month, Iraqis freezing without electricity in the winter chill would merely gather around to warm themselves...
Egyptian revolution sparks protest movement in democratic Iraq
The battle of next year's budget begins today with the distribution of the budget to all interested parties by the Obama administration. It includes cuts in education, defense, health and welfare...more.
Representative Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head a little over a month ago is singing, speaking, and answering questions. She also handled a phone call from her astronaut husband. An incredible recovery
Today is Valentine's Day... dedicated to the Italian custom of sending anonymous note to lovers. Today 1 million women are marching for Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's ouster after it comes out that he was rather, unm, 'intimate' with a 17 year old girl, prostitutes of varying erotic capabilities, and Bunga Bunga's regularly. Courtsy of Facing South/Southern Studies:
U.S. defense contractors with the most at stake in Egypt
Egypt -- where a popular uprising that began last week seeks the end to President Hosni Mubarak's 30-year rule -- is the second-largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid after Israel.
The Egyptian government receives about $2 billion a year from the United States, with most of that assistance going to its military. Last year the U.S. sent about $1.3 billion to Egypt's military compared to about $250 million in economic aid, and the Obama administration requested similar amounts for the 2011 fiscal year, as Britain's Telegraph reports.
The U.S. has long made the case that its unconditional funding for Egypt strengthens relations between the countries and provides benefits for the U.S. such as expedited processing for U.S. Navy warships sailing through the Suez Canal.
Indeed, one of the diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks noted that "President Mubarak and military leaders view our military assistance program as the cornerstone of our mil-mil relationship and consider the USD 1.3 billion annual FMS as 'untouchable compensation' for making and maintaining peace with Israel."
Last week White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said the Obama administration would be reviewing its assistance to the Egyptian government based on events over the coming days.
Obviously any change in U.S. aid policy would have important ramifications for Egypt. But it could also have implications for the U.S. companies that contract with the Defense Department to provide good and services to the Egyptian military -- and for their workforces and communities.
Facing South reviewed the Department of Defense contract database over the past two years to see what deals are already in place, and discovered many contracts with connections to the South. The following are the 10 biggest contracts involving aid to Egypt in that period... [In Full @ Southern Studies]

BREAKING: The Egyptian people show the world how to get rid of a ruthlessly corrupt regime... Egypt's president Hosni Mubarak has finally resigned.
The synopsis, commentary and analysis I wrote an hour ago, albeit no longer a complete statement of fact, follows...
[After the commentary an audio slice of American history apropos to the situation in Egypt, followed by the Minister of Information, Brother Gil Scott-Heron, with his bio of "Ronald The Ray Gun" and notes on what Reagan WILL be mostly remembered for in any concise history of America... the "B-Movie". Courtesy of the respective artists.]
Eight years of George W. Bush and all Americans could do as he slaughtered hundreds of thousands Iraqis was shake their heads... 18 DAYS of protests in Egypt and...
The crowds have been chanting "The army is OURS! The army is OURS!" even as the army and other military units (naval uniforms noticed) block the crowd from moving on the presidential palace. The state TV broadcast facilities are surrounded by a large crowd shouting "Join Us!" and protesters have been heading to other key government building. The palace grounds are surrounded by barbed wire and military units are protecting the Parliament building from the mob who showed up when the army earlier attempted to squeeze the protesters out of Tahrir Square by tank movement but only succeeded in splintering a large group off the main body of protesters who then headed to the parliament and have been there since.
The U.S. mainstream media representation of recent events in Egypt from the Washington Post
A Razer-sharp analysis: Hosni Mubarak committed the worst possible strategic and tactical mistake he could have ever made yesterday. Huge numbers of people headed for Tahrir square to celebrate on word he was stepping down, with one of his top army men saying "all protester demands would be met", and then... he didn't.
Yesterday ElBaradei said "...the army would save Egypt." There is no longer any reasonably effective way for the Egyptian military to suppress the millions of people throughout Egypt demanding Mubarak's exit from the seat of power without killing thousands of civilians, tearing Egyptian society and it's army apart. Expect the army to back ElBaradei's play. Soon.
Either that or expect a truly ugly rift in the Egyptian military, with 30 year ruling Mubarak possibly finishing his career hanging upside down from a lamp post along with a number of his henchmen who haven't already fled the country.
Recent reports confirm that Mubarak is in Sharm el-Sheikh Egypt, a resort on the Southern tip of the Sinai Peninsula, where massive security is in place and he can just step across the border into Jordan (perhaps destabilizing that country by his presence as well)
The rats continue their run down the hawsers... Senator Kyl of Arizona will not run again in 2012 and there are others who have decided that the million dollars plus it costs to campaign for a senatorial seat is just not worth it.
According to a Pakistani court the US diplomat held for shooting two people who were allegedly trying to mug him in the city of Lahore will be held for as long as 14 days while the court decides whether the shooter DOES have diplomatic immunity, and whether the prosecution's charge of murder has merit.
Arizona has filed a counter-suit against the federal government claiming the feds are NOT controlling the the state's border with Mexico, so the state assumes the power, rights and privileges.
A British judge has delayed the extradition/deportation hearing of Wikileak's Julian Assange with Assange claiming he will not be able to get a fair trial in Sweden on what is essentially a rape charge of a demeanor not known to any other nation in the world as 'crime' (knowingly not wearing a condom) because the Swedish prime minister had declared him "the number one public enemy"
More about Reagan's legacy, or should I say "career as a front man for easily as many criminals and thugs as hosted by the Nixon administration" in the commentary.
In OTHER News:
A current survey and census shows us that a MASSIVE number of US Veterans are homeless
Also see: Federal Homelessness Program Runs Out Of Money As Need Rises @ Huffington Post for more on how homelessness is impacting another part of American society, the middle-class EX-Homeowner
UPI: Homeless are often veterans
Quantitatively,16% to be somewhat exact...
Survey: 16% of veterans homeless
Then there's the "old-timer" who claims simple modifications to calculations used on previously existing numbers (2010) make 43%, not just a measly 16% or less, and since it's unlikely the situation has improved very much since this post was logged, the number is larger than old timer's previous estimation.
Which leads me to our Link Of The Week: http://armthehomeless.wordpress.com/
That's right... "Arm The Homeless".
Not only because of the blog's viciously direct title. I like this blogger's writing style...
As The Dominoes Cascade: First Egypt, Then The WorldCheck Out [Arm The Homeless]
First I think it is a good idea to put this post into context. As I type this, it is about 2AM Egyptian time as I watch the live feed of Tahrir Square on Al Jeezra. A few hours ago, US supported dictator of Egypt addressed his oppressed nation and stated that despite the hundreds of murdered protesters by police and the hundreds of thousands of people demanding his resignation, Mubarak gave the Egyptian people a big “FUCK YOU” and refused to step down. No, I’m not shitting you. After over two weeks of protests in Cairo and Alexandria, after multiple government vehicles run over innocent, peaceful protesters like worthless animals in the streets, and after US trained, armed, and funded Egyptian police forces murder non-violent demonstrators in broad daylight and in cold blood, this motherfucker has the balls to get on his pathetic state-run, propaganda pushing television station and tell these people that he doesn’t give a fuck about what they say? John Stewart sums it up quite well although this was from a few days ago, but Mubarak still had the same power-hungry and deluded mentality when he spoke today.

MUBARAK QUITS! Further, a "Top Egyptian army commander tells protesters all demands to be met" even as the workers strike. Public workers, state workers, office workers, the people who operate the Suez Canal, transport workers... Even the main Egyptian newspaper, al-Ahram, by employees demanding more editorial freedom and working condition improvements.
Meanwhile, the January 25 student movement and youth representatives are in negotiations with the Muslim Brotherhood, which has lost thousands of members over the years due to the Mubarak regime's torture chambers and repressive policies, on whether they'll negotiate with the new government most likely to be led by the person who was responsible for that repression, Omar Suleiman, Egypt's Intelligence chief, also known as the person directly responsible for Egypt's end of America's rendition and torture/interrogation program.
Representative Gabrielle Giffords, shot in the head at a 'meet your congressperson' event in Tucson Arizona by an angry, metally disturbed, politically confused young man has been in intensive therapy and is talking.
An American is #1 WITHOUT the "Bullet"! The new National Threat Assessment claims Osama bin-Laden is no longer the biggest threat to us, but Anwar al-Awlaki, an American from the great Southwest who's never committed a crime or hurt anyone personally. This implies that thoughts and words are more dangerous than the actions that follow in matters of national security. You might also think this indicates the people who decide what a "threat" is want you to watch your mouth. The House Homeland Security Committee is focusing on domestic terrorism in current hearings.
In OTHER news of "People who have done nothing tangible but have been considered "terrorists", A U.S. military commission reduced the prison sentence of Osama Bin Laden's cook to two years after a plea bargain.
MORE TERROR... In the "Be afraid be VERY afraid" department, U.S. Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano warned that the threat of terrorism was "at its most heightened state" since 9/11.
CPAC, the Conservative Political Action Committee is about to open it's convention in Washington DC. ONE of the speakers will potentially end up running for the Republican presidential nomination. More from the Washington Post: What to watch for at CPAC
MEANWHILE, Representative Christopher Lee, a two-term Conservative Republican from Buffalo New York who is married and has a son answered a Craigslist "Women seek Men" ad "using a Gmail account that Gawker said it had traced to Mr. Lee’s personal Facebook account." from a woman "seeking a financially and emotionally secure man.". He sent a "Buff" picture to her in the email exchange that followed and it SOMEHOW ended up published in The Gawker an internet gossip rag. Within 3 hours he was handing in his resignation.
Senator Jim Webb of West Virginia has announced he will not run again. He championed Veteran's causes. More on the topic of "Politicians getting out of politics" in the commentary.

US-based Anadarko Petroleum, which also owns an interest in the block, said the well found some 240 net feet of oil, condensate and natural gas pay.
Further evaluation would be carried out, the companies said.
Ghana's offshore Jubilee field was discovered in 2007 by US firm Kosmos and is estimated to contain more than a billion barrels, one of the largest finds in West Africa in recent years.

No... YOU go away - In Egypt, the government, who for the most part are military officers, has told the demonstrators in Tahrir Square and now in front of the Parliament building as well, to 'get out of the streets' or face a coup, even as Egyptian workers, including the workers at Cairo's port, go on strike.
There are also striking iron and steel workers, textile workers, pharmaceutical company workers, and public employees
Yesterday, workers from five companies on the Suez Canal went on strike. They've been joined by workers from government, sanitation, courts, and elsewhere. Railway technicians and oil workers are joining the militancy today, according to Hossam el-Hamalawy. Factories in Suez, Helwan and Mahalla have gone on strike, and more workers from Mahalla will be joining tomorrow. Strikes are popping up everywhere. Now I'm hearing that iron and steel workers are among the strikers, and that their demands are as follows... [More @ Uruknet]Good luck with that coup guys, and try not to kill too many of your own citizens before they hang you from lamp posts.
President Medvedev of Russia has ordered a permanent conversion to Daylight Savings Time at the end of March and the change also consolidates Russia's eleven time zones into 'only' nine.
Vice President Biden is talking up a plan for a $53 billion dollar High Speed Rail project. Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and perhaps a North-South connector in the Central Valley of California. Also planned are a number of projects in the Eastern U.S. transportation corridor. The project would be expected to create thousands of jobs for perhaps a decade if the plan 'rolls'... and also assuming there's a Buy American/Hire American clause in the contracts, or else China's steel rails are so much less expensive than ones made by what's left (not much) of the US steel industry.
You can't tell the party affiliations without a scorecard - The House has voted down an extension of the PATRIOT Act IN IT'S CURRENT FORM with the assistance of twenty six Tea Party Republicans who voted with the Democrats. This bill only covers "...access to business records, individual terrorists as agents of foreign powers, and roving wiretaps" NOT ALL of the act which encompasses minor but Orwellian changes to literally thousands of US Codes and laws. You can peruse the bill, HR.514 at opencongresss, and read more at The Hill
The general in charge of our Special Operators and Special Forces has said those troops are "frayed" and the rotation out of the theatre for R&R, currently 90 days, is too short... with the demand for these forces being described as "insatiable".

The Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten has summarized an Israeli military briefing by Israeli Chief of Staff Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi of a US congressional delegation a little over a year ago and concludes that‘ The memo on the talks between Ashkenazi and [Congressman Ike] Skelton, as well as numerous other documents from the same period of time, to which Aftenposten has gained access, leave a clear message: The Israeli military is forging ahead at full speed with preparations for a new war in the Middle East.Note: This war preparation is serious and specific, according to the paper, and clearly is not just a matter of vague contingency planning.
The paper says that US cables quote Ashkenazi telling the US congressmen, “I’m preparing the Israeli army for a major war, since it is easier to scale down to a smaller operation than to do the opposite.” [More, including links, at Juan Cole's Informed Comment]
