Just like the Kennedys and their Scotch - We're two weeks from an election in California that might 'recreationalize' Pot and the Mexican authorities have captured 105 tons of marijuana.
As France moves into the sixth day of a general strike the focus is on electrical and transit systems. There may be as many as 1/2 million people marching in Paris today and polls show 70% popular support among the rest of the 'proles'.
As if that's not enough a Saudi report says the comments from the captured fighter in Afghanistan are correct about attacks on European targets... and France IS the primary target possibly due to the French regime's decision to ban females from wearing their traditional Burquas.
But it IS notable there ARE active threats to American territory...

San Carlos California is going out of the business of supplying services to their citizens as they issue a formal request for their Fire Department to be attached to the county. The city of San Carlos is attempting to stay afloat as a municipal entity in an increasingly downsized California. The Police department tasks were recently outsourced to the county which is due take over on November first.

If ever I am tempted by the siren songs of my tribal past as a deep-fried, yellow-dawg Democrat, and begin to feel any faint, atavistic stirrings of sympathy for the old gang, I simply think of things like the scenario below, sketched last week by Johann Hari, and those wispy ghosts of partisanship past go howling back to the depths:
Imagine if, an hour from now, a robot-plane swooped over your house and blasted it to pieces. The plane has no pilot. It is controlled with a joystick from 7,000 miles away, sent by the Pakistani military to kill you. It blows up all the houses in your street, and so barbecues your family and your neighbours until there is nothing left to bury but a few charred slops. Why? They refuse to comment. They don't even admit the robot-planes belong to them. But they tell the Pakistani newspapers back home it is because one of you was planning to attack Pakistan. How do they know? Somebody told them. Who? You don't know, and there are no appeals against the robot.Friends, it's very simple: if you support Barack Obama and the Democrats -- even if reluctantly, even if you're just being all sophisticatedly super-savvy and blogospherically strategic about it, playing the "long game" or eleven-dimensional chess or what have you -- you are supporting the outright murder of innocent people who have never done anything against you or yours. You have walked into a house, battered down the bedroom door, put the barrel of a gun against the temple of a sleeping child, and pulled the trigger. That is what you are supporting, that is what you are complicit in, that is what you yourself are doing...
Now imagine it doesn't end there: these attacks are happening every week somewhere in your country. They blow up funerals and family dinners and children. The number of robot-planes in the sky is increasing every week. You discover they are named "Predators", or "Reapers" – after the Grim Reaper. No matter how much you plead, no matter how much you make it clear you are a peaceful civilian getting on with your life, it won't stop. What do you do? If there was a group arguing that Pakistan was an evil nation that deserved to be violently attacked, would you now start to listen?
...[This] is in fact an accurate description of life in much of Pakistan today, with the sides flipped. The Predators and Reapers are being sent by Barack Obama's CIA, with the support of other Western governments, and they killed more than 700 civilians in 2009 alone – 14 times the number killed in the 7/7 attacks in London. The floods were seen as an opportunity to increase the attacks, and last month saw the largest number of robot-plane bombings ever: 22. Over the next decade, spending on drones is set to increase by 700 per cent.

The Guardian can reveal that the Islamic republic was instrumental in forming an alliance between Iraq's Nouri al-Maliki, who is vying for a second term as prime minister, and the country's powerful radical Shia cleric leader, Moqtada al-Sadr.
The deal – which involved Syria, Lebanon's Hezbollah and the highest authorities in Shia Islam – positions Maliki as a frontrunner to return as leader despite a seven-month stalemate between Iraq's feuding political blocs.
It also positions Iran as a potent buffer to US interests at a time when America is looking to change its relationship with Iraq from military overlords to civilian partners.

Grand Goave - Rosie Benjamin is just one of over 1.3 million people living in Haiti's 1,354 squalid refugee camps. She and 1,200 others are jammed into 300 tents and plastic tarp-shacks on a soccer field in Grand Goâve.
Like about 70 percent of Haiti's refugee camps, the residents here are on their own. Apart from water deliveries, they get nothing from the government and the massive humanitarian apparatus on the ground. No food. No jobs. And no news about their future.
"We went to City Hall, we didn't learn anything. We went to Terre des Hommes, nothing," Benjamin said. "So far we haven't gotten anything. Nothing. We are sitting here and we have no idea what anyone is thinking."
Benjamin and her neighbours live on money from relatives overseas, share what food they have, and every now and then a non-governmental organisation (NGO) drops off some bulgar wheat and vegetable oil, but that's about it. Some of the children – many of whom will likely not go to school this year – even have orange-tinted hair.
Asked about that obvious sign of malnutrition and other conditions, Deborah Hyde, a member of the U.N. "Shelter Cluster" – a U.N.-mandated management team tasked with trying to coordinate the NGOs working on the shelter issue – said...

The rescue of the thirty three Chilean miners trapped for sixty nine days is complete. They appear to be in good shape, and they're "Heroes". See Reuters "Rescued Chile miners recover, face celebrity status"
SOME PEOPLE are saying that "Capitalism Saved The Miners" but Juan Cole at Informed Comment has a much different take on the miners and their ordeal... Was their ordeal due to the long term effect of economic policies foisted off on Bolivian dictator Pinochet by Richard Nixon and Nixon's Secretary of State, known WAR CRIMINAL Henry Kissinger?
The corporate mass media (especially television) did not treat the Chilean mine collapse as a labor story but rather as a feel-good human interest story.Meanwhile, Europe is still under alert due to threats by Islamic fighters captured who claim to know what al Qaeda is up to...
It not only avoided asking hard questions about why the near-disaster occurred and why the mine workers could be treated like guinea pigs by their employers, it actively obscured these questions. I saw a psychobabbling guest of Tony Harris on CNN actually talking about how the Chilean government is the father figure for the miners and their supporters and people are turning to it for succor and inspiration. I threw up a little in my mouth.
So here are the questions that a social historian would ask about the sorry episode, and which I never heard anyone on television news ask during all the wall to wall coverage... Read Them @ Informed Comment
THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY THOUSAND French people are in the streets over their government's new retirement policy and there are new demonstrations in Greece and Italy, also over government controlled pension modifications. In Greece, demonstrators occupied the Acropolis and were driven out by tear gas spewing riot police. I posted quite a few links about France's citizens tendency towards rebellion yesterday.
The Afghan "Peace Commission" has stated that the Taliban (or elements of it) ARE WILLING TO be involved in the now-seminal talks. Especially if foreign forces leave he country. Meanwhile there have been four more drone attacks by the U.S. (which apparently isn't seeking peace per se, but a 'piece of the extractive resources "action") on the AfPak border, targeting the Talib.

Education or Incarceration?
With headlines focused on Los Angeles and the Bay Area, it’s easy to forget that California is an agricultural state.
But it may be in poor agricultural communities, especially those in the San Joaquin Valley, where the state’s twisted priorities are the clearest. In the middle of a budget crisis, what will the state fund—schools or prisons?
Unemployment in California’s rural counties is often twice as high as on the coast. The economic crisis in small valley towns like Delano and McFarland was a fact of life long before California’s current budget woes. In Delano, historic home of Cesar Chavez’s United Farm Workers, 30 percent of the residents live below the poverty line. Desperate for employment, many were sold the idea that prisons would provide a source of jobs beyond low-wage farm labor. As a result, the area has become home to giant institutions whose budgets dwarf those of local school districts. Valley teenagers today see those prisons in their future, whether as guards or inmates, rather than college.
Every day in Delano 3,176 people go to work in the Kern Valley State Prison and North Kern State Prison. Almost as many of the town’s families now depend on prison jobs as those supported by year-round field labor. Thousands of former farmworkers now guard other Latinos and blacks—inmates just as poor, but mostly from the urban centers of Los Angeles or San Jose rather than the rural communities of the Central Valley. The two prisons have a combined annual budget of $294 million. By comparison, the town’s 2010 general fund was a tenth of that, and the budget of its public schools a twentieth. More Here

The thirty three Chilean miners trapped underground for sixty nine days are slowly being rescued. Thirteen are now above-ground and it takes about fifty minutes for each rescue. There are close to FIFTEEN THOUSAND reporters on the scene, including news staff from the North Korean and Yemeni media.
The president has lifted the ban on offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico imposed following the blowout of the Deepwater-Horizon-Macondo oil well, but those permits will be reinstated under supposedly stiff new regulations. There were only approximately sixty permits affected by the moratorium.
The Whitman-Brown California gubernatorial debate went ahead last night even as the Green Party candidate was removed from the campus of the Catholic college in San Rafael where the debate was held.
Remember this on election day... Meg Whitman is NOT a "Whore". She's just trying to buy the elections with her own money, and that more likely puts her in the "Panderer" or "Jane" category.
"The French are fully capable of not going to work" - It's Day Two of the French General strike and students around the country are beginning to get active leading some to believe it could be a reoccurrence of the MASSIVE general strike in 1968 where the sentiment "So what if all the colleges burn down?" was scrawled in graffiti on the Sorbonne along with other witticisms such as "Demand The Impossible"."
What Sarkozy and his government are now closely monitoring is whether the students and schoolchildren are going to join the protests. If they do, there is trouble ahead. In May 1968 they almost toppled the regime, with Charles de Gaulle secretly scurrying to check on the army's loyalty in Baden Baden, the then headquarters of the French army in Germany. Figures show that yesterday's demonstrations attracted many more young people than those during the previous weeks had. If the strike were to be held again, day after day, it could create enough momentum for the nation's youth to join forces with their elders and change the face of the movement.

Since the beginning of September alone, President Obama has authorised at least 25 targeted killings. The total since he came to office is more than 100. These have certainly killed some of the senior operatives of al-Qaeda and the Taliban. They have also killed dozens of people, including a large number of women and children, who were not involved in terrorism.
And yet there has been very little protest, certainly compared to the storm of international criticism that greeted the decision to hold suspected terrorists at Guantanamo – a policy that didn't kill anyone, let alone any innocent women and children. The silence from human rights groups over the drone attacks is deafening. What has persuaded them that it is acceptable to kill people, including people who are not terrorists, but that it is inhumane to deprive them of a good night's sleep?
In Full, Chris FloydA Federal judge has thrown out the Pentagon's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy as unconstitutional, depriving people of equal protection under the law. The "Lame Duck" session of congress coming up was going to vote on a repeal... but the Obama administration and the DOJ might simply just drop their end of the case and finish it now.

Over the weekend there was a rescue breakthrough at the Chilean Gold and Copper mine with 33 miners trapped for two months. It will only take a couple of days o extricate them now and sunglasses are going to be suppled to prevent eye damage due to the extensive period of time these people spent underground. Studies on their survival under isolated conditions are sure to follow
In Pakistan, the roads into the Khyber Pass 'reopen' but there were over 100 fuel trucks burned in the last two weeks... thirty of which were burned on the Southern route, far away from the scene of protest.

On Oct. 6, March Forward! veterans led a dramatic shut-down of a military recruiting station to mark the ninth anniversary of the war on Afghanistan.
The recruiting station is located in Hollywood, Calif. on the busy “Walk of Fame,” and is home to Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps recruiting offices. Over 100 people joined the veterans at the entrance, including students and military families chanting “Money for jobs and education—not for war and occupation,” and “Hell no, we won’t go, we won’t die for Texaco!” The protest forced the recruiting station to shut its doors for the day.

The Hungarian government will take control of the Aluminum plant that spilled massive amounts of toxic material partially because the plant employs thousands of people and the government is going to see to it's timely re-opening, and also because more of the dike that was damaged and gave way flooding the Danube Valley with toxic liquid is beginning to give way, which will potentially release material even more toxic.

Then it went further, because you see these other groups had been buying all this previously tasty sausage, would eat it, and then repackage what came out the other end (derivatives, securities, funds, you name it). Yes, by this time they were selling shit. Not just any shit, but after the meat became toxic — e-coli poisoned shit. And because the original meat (aka ‘mortgage’) paperwork was long gone, nobody could figure out where the original meat came from or who it belonged to. Hell, by this point, they were losing track of where the sausage itself had come from. The only thing anybody knew is an ever increasing percentage of the sausage was becoming ever more toxic, and the resulting shit even more so. The sausage makers didn’t want to stop making money, so they just kept on making poisonous sausage. Meanwhile, they cast about for a way to deal with the problem. Giving up sausage making was unthinkable to them, so instead they decided to go after all the farmers.
Let’s pretend mortgages are meat.
No, no — bear with me, this will make sense in a moment.
In the olden days (circa 1990s), banks and other financial institutions would write mortgages, which were backed by the asset — known as the house and/or property. A single piece of meat — say a porterhouse steak. Sometimes that steak would be sold to another entity, and along with it all the paperwork showing where that steak came from, who was responsible for it, and so on. If there was a problem with the steak, you’d just go back to the farm where it came from, deal with it there. If the product was no good, the farm would go out of business (be foreclosed), but otherwise it was a nice situation, and although not hugely profitable, it still made money. Simple, huh?
Then the banks and financial behemoths got a bright idea: Let’s turn all this meat into tasty sausage. We’ll just chuck it into the grinder, mix it all up, and let people buy pieces (shares) of the sausage. On average, it’ll be even better than meat because we can average everything — and we can throw in the nasty bits (the lousy properties, the poor risks), spice it up (give it AAA+ ratings) and it’ll all be the same. As long as our supply of meat is plentiful and keeps getting better and better, we’ll get filthy stinking rich.
Suddenly there was huge demand for more and more meat — and the sausage makers were so eager to get more, they stopped asking where it came from or whether it was any good...
