Due to time constraints there will be no text news synopsis this morning...

However, there are a couple of news items to note:

Get used to being on the dole America - Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Council of Economic Advisers chief Christina Romer, and OMB Director Peter Orzsag believe there is no relief on the horizon for jobs (at least this year).

Commentary, from Firedoglake:
Despite some rhetoric about a jobs agenda (which has faded into the distance recently), there continues to be no sense of urgency about the jobs picture. There are enough pieces of legislation (the $154 billion dollar extenders bill, the $100 billion “Local Jobs for America” Act) in the pipeline to stimulate growth somewhat, and the hiring around the US Census will provide a short-term boost, but official Washington seems more concerned with chasing the ghosts of inflation than doing anything meaningful to arrest the jobs crisis. So it goes on, despite the electoral imperative, from the perspective of the Democrats. [In Full with linkage]
More: Robert Reich - Expect 10% Unemployment until 2011 (Full talk, 1h 8m The Commonwealth Club of California, January 2010... 3m synopsis @ Youtube)

Finally, in case you just can't wait on the unemployment line due to culturally induced ADHD, and get busted stealing food (or, considering that this film leans to the paranoid Right/Libertarian side of the American political equation, that Isod shirt or assault rifle you just had to have) KBDI, Public Television for Colorado, has decided to broadcast "Camp FEMA: American Lockdown"

It's notable that the producer of this film would have you believe that this is a recent development under the Obama administration (note that "...homeschoolers, gun rights activists and anti-abortionists..." are the focus of the blurb below), but the presidential executive orders allowing for this treatment of American citizens has been in place for years and has been much discussed among the African American community and it's politicized hip-hop musicians (See: "Music is Still the Weapon" @ Foreign Policy In Focus for a globalized view from the Nigerian musician Fela).

Forced relocation, for one, has been practiced on American communities of color for years now. Just ask the unwillingly relocated residents of Chicago's Cabrini Greens, New Orleans, or the folks living along the 'Hurricane Belt' islands of the Southeast US.

Recent legislation attempting to legitimize the use of internment camps to detain U.S. citizens in the event of an uprising or civil unrest has many people asking what nation they live in.

In a country born out of political dissent, we watch our leaders in Washington slowly pass bills that label ordinary Americans as thought criminals and potential domestic terrorists for simply questioning the actions of their government. We see third party candidates and their impassioned supporters listed in secret government reports that call their allegiance into question and brand them as fanatics and extremists.

Senate committee hearings and official FBI documents further illustrate the mindset of our elected officials as they classify homeschoolers, gun rights activists and anti-abortionists as threats against the existing social and political order; by default creating an entire nation of radicals and revolutionaries - where everyone is a suspect… equally guilty until proven otherwise.

How has our government shown that they will deal with these people? The same way as every other totalitarian regime throughout history - marginalize their activities then lock them up. Prisons are being built; internment camps constructed and laws passed that deal severely with anyone who dares to step out of line or ask too many questions. [In Full]

However, there are a couple of news items to note:

Dennis Kucinich, Vegan, and firm supporter of health care for all AKA the 'Public Option', has made an announcement that he will support the Obama administration's health reform bill
"...Each generation has had to decide how to provide health care to our nation. I believe health care is a civil right. We’ve always seen resistance. I’ve spent my life striving for health care. I lived in 21 different places growing up, including a couple cars. I’ve struggled with Krohn’s disease most of my adult life. I’ve learned of the benefits of taking charge of my own health care. I’ve had access to the best practitioners, and I’ve received the benefits. Health and health care is personal.

…Some believe health care is a privilege based on ability to pay. Obama is attempting to open health care to 30 million people within a for-profit health care system. Others believe that health care is a right, and should be non-profit. I expanded the health care debate beyond a for-profit system. The first version of health care bill made the bill worth supporting in committee. I joined Progressive Caucus in saying I wouldn’t support without a public option or an ERISA waiver for single payer.

Some said I would cast deciding vote. President’s visit to my district underscored the urgency. I have taken this fight further than many in Congress cared to carry it.

OH-10 district has suffered under a struggling economy. I take my responsibility personally. In the past week, it’s become clear that the vote on the final health care bill will be close. I take this vote seriously. I’m quite aware of the historic flight that has taken decades. I’ve seen the political and financial pressure against taking this minimal step. I know I have to make a decision on the bill as it is. My criticism of the legislation has been well-reported. I do not retract those criticisms. They stand as legitimate and cautionary. I have doubts about the bill. It is not a step toward anything I supported. However, after careful discussions with the President, the Speaker, I have decided to cast a vote in favor of the legislation. If my vote is to be counted, let it count now in passage of the bill, hopefully in the direction of comprehensive reform. [Liveblogged with commentary, at Firedoglake]

US military news... Following on the heels of a report that the unemployment rate is higher among returning Iraq/Afghanistan veterans in the 18-24 year old range (21.1% Vs 16.6% for civilian youth) McClatchy news notes that the sexual assault rate is higher as well, and there are beliefs that the higher rate is under-reported:
Washington - The number of sexual assaults reported in the U.S. military rose 11 percent last year, the Defense Department said Tuesday, but Pentagon officials conceded that they still don't know how common sexual assaults are because many troops fear retribution if the attacks come to the attention of their commanders.

Despite the suspected underreporting, sexual assault is more common in the military than it is among the civilian population, the report suggests — two for every 1,000 service members, versus 1.8 per 1,000 civilian women and one per 1,000 civilian men, according to statistics compiled by the Family Violence Prevention Fund. Here's something I took note of a few years ago (2005) that surfacing again in more mainstream sources.

Mining and industrial pollution is upsetting the genetics of Canada's indigenous community: Dramatic decline of male births in indigenous communities tied to industrial pollution
Most startling is the sharp drop of boys among the Aamjiwnaang Anishinaabek: “A greater rate of change than has been reported previously anywhere,” said a 2005 study published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

It’s the kind of attention this tiny community of 850 never wanted. In the beginning, they could not conceive what was happening in their community.

Their pain and questions began in 2002, when biologist Michael Gilbertson found elevated levels of PCBs, pesticides and heavy metals on the reserve. Gilbertson asked if they had more girls than boy children.

Tribal members were first baffled, and then aghast as they realized that they had enough girls for three baseball teams, but not enough boys for even one team. [In Full @ Indian Country Today]

Never underestimate the power of the press:
Fake News Incites Panic in Georgia

April Fool’s is still more than two weeks away, but
producers at the Imedi television station in the republic of Georgia chose to play an Orwellian joke on the country. Airing a mock documentary about a live Russian invasion of the country, intended as political satire, the station sparked widespread panic—after all, the two countries were briefly at war less than two years ago. Seeing a nervous anchor break news that sporadic fighting had already spilled into the streets of Tblisi and clumsy images of a fighter jet dropping bombs, people scrambled to safety and placed emergency calls. Clearly, they had missed the disclaimer at the beginning of the show. “If you hear that war started, of course you run for the bank machine, then run home, it’s natural,” a taxi driver in Tbilisi told The New York Times." A thought on the current state of American education, culture, and politcal governance from Ben Franklin and other sources:
"I've never seen anything like it," said Mark Shelton, a high school teacher from St. Paul, MN who stared blankly at the page in front of him for several minutes before finally holding it up to his ear. "What does it want from us?"
Benjamin Franklin, Letter to the Constitutional ConventionWASHINGTON—Unable to rest their eyes on a colorful photograph or boldface heading that could be easily skimmed and forgotten about, Americans collectively recoiled Monday when confronted with a solid block of uninterrupted text.

Dumbfounded citizens from Maine to California gazed helplessly at the frightening chunk of print, unsure of what to do next. Without an illustration, chart, or embedded YouTube video to ease them in, millions were frozen in place, terrified by the sight of one long, unbroken string of English words.

"Why won't it just tell me what it's about?" said Boston resident Charlyne Thomson, who was bombarded with the overwhelming mass of black text late Monday afternoon. "There are no bullet points, no highlighted parts. I've looked everywhere—there's nothing here but words." Due to time constraints there will be no text news synopsis this morning...

But there IS Santa Cruz California Local News...

So how is it in YOUR neck of the woods?
January's jobless rate in Santa Cruz County at 15 percent, highest ever

SANTA CRUZ -- The Santa Cruz County jobless rate climbed in January to 15 percent, which appears to be a new record, from 13.3 percent in December.

The local unemployment rate, released by the state Wednesday, topped the national rate of 10.6 percent, the state rate of 13.2 percent and the Santa Clara County rate of 12.1 percent.

Locally, construction and retail each dropped 600 jobs, and farm jobs shrank 2,200.

In addition, the state's report of 600 local government jobs added in December proved to be in error.

Instead, local government, which includes city and county government, public schools, the county Office of Education and Cabrillo College, lost 100 jobs in December and 200 more in January.

Usually Jorge Villalobos, analyst with the state Employment Development Department, can compare current data to the 19-year average but not this time. That information was not accessible because of the annual benchmarking process for labor statistics, he said.

He did say January's jobless rate is higher than it was in 1993, when it reached 14.6 percent. Because of the benchmarking process, he was unable to review data from 2005 to 2008.

Sentinel files, however, show the jobless rate did not exceed 9 percent in January for any of those years. [In Full]

In other Santa Cruz related news... Lost Boys' actor found dead: "Corey Haim, the young star of the 1987 Santa Cruz-based cult hit "The Lost Boys," died Wednesday at the age of 38."

If you knew the people who modeled their lifestyles growing up in Santa Cruz around the myth of the "Lost Boys" movie and the "Vampires", you'd understand how apropos Haim's death is. Thirty eight, substance abuser, and living at home with his mother.

Unknown DrummerOther ways to go... Yesterday, at the Santa Cruz Farmers Market Drum Circle, a rather middle class, hip appearing gentleman, who had been attending the circle for the last few weeks, may have played his last set. The unnamed man played long and hard then collapsed in an apparent coronary failure. CPR was administered and the paramedics showed up rapidly, with no access issues to the site in spite of the city claimed potential for "interference with emergency services" that was used as a disinformational myth just a year or so ago in their FAILED attempt to chase away the 20 year long impromptu musical event.

They also claimed that occurrences like this:
Tree Storage
...were 'damaging' the trees near the circle.

There is no word so far on the condition of the gentleman pictured above left, but one way or another, we'll be seeing you soon at the circle friend.
