The House passed the Tax (Break) Bill and Unemployment Benefit extension last night after a number of stalls and dodges. It goes to the White House for an expected signature now. This leaves Don't the Ask Don't Tell repeal and the DREAM ACT, allowing illegal alien teenagers the chance to fight our dirty wars for us in return for citizenship on the front burner.
Did the Republicans just bite off more than they can chew? Harry Reid just pulled the hotly contested Omnibus Spending Bill from the floor,leaving the Republicans wondering if they just got stuck with the Democrats saying "YOU make the budget then!" when they get to take the reins of Congressional leadership in January. THe US government ill run on 'continuing resolutions until such a time... perhaps February. This will backlog the whole process of budgeting for the US government's operations. President Obama Has signed a bill that prohibits HIGHLY COMPRESSED AUDIO ADVERTISING ON AMERICAN RADIO AND TV.
The International Red Cross has apparently taken umbrage to certain things in the just released Presidential Af-Pak sitrep. They say the overall circumstances of humanitarian conditions are worse than they've been in 30 years.
Meanwhile the President's report says...
...enough progress was being made in Afghanistan to begin withdrawing U.S. troops in July, even as he faces growing doubts about his war strategy.Which of course means the advertised pullout might yet again become a surge[tm], AKA a "reverse-pullout" (It's OK Barack, there IS NO "Winning Strategy"... just GET OUT!)
Obama, under pressure to show results after criticizing his predecessor George W. Bush for neglecting the war, insisted that U.S.-led forces were scoring gains against the Taliban and al Qaeda but warned they were fragile and reversible. [More @ Reuters]

The Senate passed the tax break extension 81-19 and it's gone to the house, as the President pressures the congresscritters to finish it and get on with business. It adds $980 Billion dollars to the national debt and could be contentious among the 'tea-party' crowd. The Don't Ask Don't Tell standalone bill passed in the House and will go to the Senate where for the first time in 41 years the Defense Appropriations Bill was stalled.... over it's inclusion.
The Ninth Wave is going to be a 'wave of lard' - The US government runs out of authorization to spend money at midnight Saturday unless the Omnibus spending bill passes. The bill appropriates $1.1 Trillion dollars to run the basic functions of the US government for the period from now to the end of next September. It contains approximately 6390 earmarks totalling ONLY 8 billion dollars.

Julian Assange has been released on bail. The judge refused to keep him in jail until his January extradition hearing. He's required to stay in a 10 bedroom mansion with 600 acres where he is free to roam, except the restriction he must report to the police every evening.

The fantasy is that somehow this treatment -- a global manhunt, solitary confinement in the Victorian cell that drove Oscar Wilde to suicidal despair within a matter of days, and now a bracelet tracking his movements -- is not atypical, because somehow Sweden must be a progressively hot-blooded but still progressively post-feminist paradise for sexual norms in which any woman in any context can bring the full force of the law against any man who oversteps any sexual boundary.
Well, I was in Norway in March of this year at a global gathering for women leaders on International Women's Day, and heard extensively from specialists in sex crime and victims' rights in Sweden. So I knew this position taken by the male-dominated US, British and Swedish media was, basically, horsesh-t.
But none of the media outlets hyperventilating now about how this global-manhunt/Bourne-identity-chase-scene-level treatment of a sex crime allegation originating in Sweden must be 'normative' has bothered to do any actual reporting of how rape -- let alone the far more ambiguous charges of Assange's accusers, which are not charges of rape but of a category called 'sex by surprise,' which has no analog elsewhere -- is actually prosecuted in Sweden... This will be the largest veteran-led civil resistance to the wars in recent history. On December 16, 2010, Veterans for Peace and other supporters will rally at Lafayette Park, then march in solidarity to the White House. They will refuse to leave the White House, demanding an immediate end to U.S. wars, whether conducted by occupation troops, drones, or proxy, in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Palestine.

Iraqi leaders have chafed at the sanctions as an affront to their sovereignty, and have pressed for years for their removal.

The Senate was supposed to stay in session last night until the tax bill passed but they went home claiming it will be voted on today. But there are still procedural issues before it goes to the House, where the question is "Will the Democrats stick with the leadership?". The House also has to vote shortly on new funding for government operations to the tune of $1.1 trillion dollars... with 6,300 earmarks... But it has to be passed or the US government goes broke. The stand-alone Don't Ask Don't Tell bill is also hanging fire.
President Chavez of Venezuela, in the wake of huge storms which have destroyed much of the country's transportation infrastructure, has declared a state of national emergency. Meaning the parliament, which is due to be taken over by the opposition party, has been 'frozen' in it's current configuration until the emergency ends.
The Department of Justice will appeal the Virginia District Court ruling against ObamaCare by a judge with interests in the health insurance industry.
TOMORROW, December 16 2010, US Veterans march on the White House for PEACE!There WILL BE civil disobedience if they are not received by the White House, and there are contingents arriving from across America. Asheville & Western North Carolina will be represented, along with Minnesota and groups from across the country. There will also be vigils in support of their actions... In San Francisco where "Civil Resistance (is) Planned for Federal Building in San Francisco" as well as Rockbridge Virginia, and in hundreds of other towns and cities across America.

Richard Holbrooke, America's chief envoy to Afghanistan, who had served every Democratic president since the Vietnam war, spoke chilling last words about the nine-year military conflict in Af-Pakistan before his death during emergency heart surgery yesterday.
"You've got to stop this war in Afghanistan," Holbrooke told his Pakistani surgeon before entering a 21-hour operation, the Washington Post reported.[Reality check: Whether his intent was to convince the Pakistanis, through the surgeon, that their support for the Talib was the context of that statement will stay with him to the grave now.]
Holbrooke was the Obama administration's special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan, a man whose diplomatic skills and understanding of Afghanistan and Pakistan were a valuable asset to the United States. [More]

A U.S. District Court Judge in Virginia has ruled that the enforced purchase of health insurance, as required by ObamaCare, is unconstitutional. Two previous judges had ruled that the required purchase is constitutional but this judge was appointed by George W. Bush and has 'interests' in the insurance industry.
The Senate made their cloture vote on the tax package including an unemployment benefit extension last night and will most likely vote on it today or tomorrow.
San Jose California has rejected an attempt to ban all Medical Marijuana dispensaries in the city.
Julian Assange of Wikileaks is in British court today requesting bail as he waits for an extradition hearing.
Update: It WAS granted... with conditions:
If released, Assange must surrender his passport and agree to travel restrictions, adhere to a curfew and wear an electronic tracking device. He must remain at a Sussex address and report into a local police station each evening. His bail was set at £240,000 ($320,000).
U.S. documentary filmmaker Michael Moore announced on his blog that he was contributing $20,000 to Assange’s bail. British heiress Jemima Khan and other celebrities have also offered to cover his bail.
The Guardian reports that the news of Assange’s bail was met with cheers inside and outside the courtroom.
But according to the Guardian Swedish prosecutors plan to launch an appeal against the court’s decision to grant Assange bail. They have two hours to file the appeal, which would be followed by a hearing within 48 hours. [In Full @ Wired, with linkage]

Due to time constraints, just a quick synopsis of the news this morning...
Richard Holbrooke, our Foreign Policy "point man" on Pakistan and Afghanistan is under the scalpel for heart surgery leaving him out of this week's final policy review on Afghanistan.
North Korea is on edge, so what do the South Koreans do? Have military exercise with artillery shelling at thirty seven bases around the country. Former New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, who's had dealings with the North Korean government before is attempting to defuse the situation as China stands by with a momentarily hands-off attitude. The US still has about 27,000 US troops in South Korea.
At noon Pacific time, the tax bill is scheduled to go to vote in the Senate. Bernie Sanders of Vermont spoke for seven hours last week from the floor explaining how badly everyone but the rich would get screwed by the tax 'deal'.
Six American soldiers were killed and a couple more were wounded in Kandahar Afghanistan by a car bomb at the gate of one of our bases.

Capitol Hill is in the midst of an uneasy truce regarding the tax "deal" as Nancy Pelosi refuses to introduce it in the House despite some Democratic darling EARMARKS such as energy credits (Green IS the color of money you know...) Expect more mayhem on Monday as the Republicans continue to stall on everything from the DREAM Act to Don't Ask Don't Tell to the START Treaty. Some Democrats are demanding a change in the Estate Tax. Another potential deal killer.

The raids shook already nervous and angry South Bay medical marijuana supporters, who quickly mobilized to protest, standing outside MediLeaf's shuttered clinics with signs saying "Our meds, our rights" and "Go raid a meth lab." (The consensus here as well//Razer)

UPDATE: Jury Convicts John Graham of Murder
(Razer Notes: The jury sure didn't deliberate very long considering the case was riding on the testimony of only one person, who is OBVIOUSLY NOT a saint.)
This is pretty sad, and shows the length the FBI will go to in order to exact their revenge on those who challenge them - ie, the American Indian Movement and U.S political prisoner Leonard Peltier.
Defense rests quickly in reservation slaying trial

RAPID CITY, S.D. - (AP) — The defense for the man accused of shooting an American Indian Movement activist more than three decades ago rested its case on Wednesday without calling any witnesses.
John Graham is charged with shooting Annie Mae Aquash and leaving her to die on South Dakota's Pine Ridge reservation in late 1975. The case has become synonymous with AIM's often-violent clashes with federal agents during the 1970s.
After the prosecution rested its case Tuesday afternoon, Graham's attorney, John Murphy, was expected to begin calling witnesses. But Murphy announced Wednesday that the defense rested. He declined to comment when asked outside the courtroom why he didn't call any witnesses.
Closing arguments in Graham's trial are scheduled for Thursday morning, and the jury will likely begin deliberating Thursday afternoon.
Prosecution witnesses testified over five days that Graham and two other AIM activists, Arlo Looking Cloud and Theda Clark, kidnapped and killed Aquash because they believed she was a government informant. Looking Cloud, who is serving a life sentence for his role in Aquash's death, told jurors this week that he saw Graham shoot her.
Murphy then asked Judge John Delaney to dismiss the charges, arguing that prosecutors hadn't proven enough of their case beyond Looking Cloud's statements. [More @ NewsDay]
