A Synopsis Of This Morning's News...
H/t to ChrisM my MP3Angel for supplying the audio files.
«o» Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has taken the lead role at the UN in an attempt to get sanctions placed on the Syrian government for it's abuses of citizens in an attempt to quell a rebellion by... Clinton's CIA friends in the country... now that Russia and China are refusing to go along with NATO's plans for the country.
«o» The Republican governor of Indiana has signed a 'right to work' law for the state, meaning that one does not have to join a union at a union shop. It's the first time in decades that such a law has been enacted and Indiana is now the only "rust belt' state with such a law.
«o» Secretary of Defense Panetta says the US will be stepping down from it's COMBAT role in Afghanistan by the end of 2013. In other Afghanistan news, a recent study shows the morale of the Taliban is quite high... Maybe because they're winning? More in the commentary.
«o» The national Breast Cancer Awareness organization "Susan G. Komen for the Cure" has broken ties with Planned Parenthood saying they don't do business with any organization under federal investigation, and PP is in congressional hearings "begun in September by Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) to determine whether it has used federal money to fund abortions, which is forbidden by law" (In Full @ The LA Times). This means the Republicans can simply investigate Planned Parenthood or any women's organization they'd like, for the most ludicrous reasons, and cut that organization off the teat(sic) of the foundation's funding, whose current director is already known for her 'right-to-life' beliefs. More on a related issue below the fold in the OTHER News.
«o» Seventy four dead and one thousand injured at a soccer riot in Egypt. The chief of police has quit and the mayor is considering the same. There were more people killed in that 90 minute 'game' than have been killed in weeks or months due to the ongoing protests in the country.
Meanwhile, in congressional news related to what they think of our First Amendment rights:
In a stunning break with First Amendment policy, House Republicans directed Capitol Hill police to detain a highly regarded documentary crew that was attempting to film a Wednesday hearing on a controversial natural gas procurement practice (commonly referred to as 'Fracking'...) [More @ Firedoglake]. Updates at the Huffington Post.
In OTHER News:
Most people have heard of Greenwashing... Here's an example of 'pinkwashing':
National Breast Cancer Awareness month (NBCAM) was started by (Astra)Zeneca as an effort to detect breast cancer in their female employees sooner (because their accountants determined that it would cost less for the company that way). They have kept breast cancer research efforts focused on said early detection while limiting discussions about the environmental toxins that cause cancer.Meanwhile, in Ontario Canada, a university professor states the obvious about ignorance, and produces a study to back it up:
According to the Toxic Links Coalition of the Bay Area, AstraZeneca profits by first producing many of the toxins implicated in the breast cancer epidemic and then by selling the drugs used to treat the disease.
To clarify, in addition to sponsoring NBCAM, AstraZeneca is the manufacturer of the world’s best selling cancer drug (Nolvadex, or tamoxifen citrate, with sales of $470 million per year) … and does a $300 million annual business in the carcinogenic herbicide actochlor. At one point, the corporation was the third largest producer of pesticides in the U.S.
Thus, AstraZeneca has profited from the entire cancer cycle from cause to detection to treatment. [Discussion thread on the topic]

Intelligence Study Links Low I.Q. To Prejudice, Racism, Conservatism
By Rebecca Searles, 02/1/2012
Are racists dumb? Do conservatives tend to be less intelligent than liberals? A provocative new study from Brock University in Ontario suggests the answer to both questions may be a qualified yes.
The study, published in Psychological Science, showed that people who score low on I.Q. tests in childhood are more likely to develop prejudiced beliefs and socially conservative politics in adulthood.
I.Q., or intelligence quotient, is a score determined by standardized tests, but whether the tests truly reveal intelligence remains a topic of hot debate among psychologists.
Dr. Gordon Hodson, a professor of psychology at the university and the study’s lead author, said the finding represented evidence of a vicious cycle: People of low intelligence gravitate toward socially conservative ideologies, which stress resistance to change and, in turn, prejudice, he told LiveScience.
Why might less intelligent people be drawn to conservative ideologies? Because such ideologies feature “structure and order” that make it easier to comprehend a complicated world, Dodson said. “Unfortunately, many of these features can also contribute to prejudice,” he added. [In Full]
