Here is a testimony from the streets of New York:
Lost my stuff, including power cord for my laptop, in the raid, something or someone cleared out my bank account, and it's raining. I could just write a country song. I'll tell you this: the resolve is still here. People I talk to are a healthy mixture of rage, comedy, resolve, and excitement. Also exhaustion. Maybe the raid was the best thing that could happen? I worry about the inevitable suffering that will occur in the cold now, and how it will be used to clear any encampment again. But there must be something like a people's library and kitchen. A physical heart. More soon. Must find money and charge my phone. Winning at last, winning at last, thank God Almighty, we are winning at last…Our movement is living through an existential, make-or-break moment.

When Tunisia rose up, Ben Ali scoffed … when young people occupied Tahrir Square, Mubarak resorted to paternalism and then mob violence … in Syria, Assad's troops fire daily into the crowds. And on Tuesday, a military style assault on Zuccotti Park – news blackouts, tear gas, closed airspace, an LRAD "sound cannon" – was carried out in the dead of night to take out our movement's spiritual home.For many weeks we had a kind of magic going for us … we held the high ground … we stuck doggedly to our Gandhian ways and blindsided the cynical world with our optimism, our camaraderie, our nonviolence, our determination to forge a different kind of future. But New York's billionaire Mayor decided to snuff us out. We wanted a Tahrir Moment, an American Spring, and he attacked us in the middle of the night while we slept. These kinds of attacks on peaceful protestors did not work in Tunisia, not in Egypt, they are not working in Syria right now, and – wake up Bloomberg & Co! – they are not going to work in America either.
This assault has stiffened our resolve. Now begins the second, visceral, canny, militant phase of our nonviolent march to real democracy. We regroup, lick our wounds and begin our counterattack as early as tomorrow.

«o» Secretary of State Clinton has just finished a jaunt around Asia and the Philippines even as Obama finishes his visit to Australia clinching a Naval basing deal (covered in yesterday's news and commentary) at Darwin. Now they're both off to Bali for the SEATO conference. The discussions will be mostly military, but there are also $25 Billion dollars in trade deals (many of the SEATO countries are 'sweatshop nations') hanging fire as well.

Obama administration pushes for stronger ties in East Asia«o» The House of Representatives is concerned that you might get into trouble if you travel interstate with a weapon so they're intending to federalize the concealed carry permit.
Top story: President Barack Obama visited the northern Australian town of Darwin, a remote location that he called "the perfect place" from which to expand U.S. and Australian military cooperation. Earlier, in the capital of Canberra, Obama and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard had announced plans to base 2,500 U.S. Marines in the country.
Obama referred to Darwin as "where our alliance was born," noting that it was devastated by Japanese bombing during World War II, shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Before his speech, Obama and Gillard laid wreaths at a memorial for the U.S.S. Peary, which was sunk during the Japanese attack.
The expanded military ties between the United States and Australia drew a concerned response from China. "It may not be quite appropriate to intensify and expand military alliances and may not be in the interest of countries within this region," said a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman.

Meanwhile, a University of California Berkeley undergraduate who worked as a licensed security guard was fatally shot when he pointed a loaded gun at campus police officers. He DID NOT HAVE ONE of those permits... as the Berkeley police hurriedly pointed out.

Needless to say, the Taliban, among other elements opposed to ANY Western interest in the country, have already attacked the gathering two times.
«o» The California Supreme Court will issue it's ruling soon on whether the people who brought the Proposition 8 Gay Marriage blocking suit have any standing in court. The state attorney general and governor Brown have indicated they have no interest in pursuing the issue either way.
«o» The Feds have caught a 22 year old in Pennsylvania who they claim took a pot shot or two at the bulletproof glass at the White House with an AK47.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A major university in eastern North Carolina was locked down for three hours Wednesday when a man carrying a golf umbrella was mistaken for a gunman.
Greenville Police spokesman Sgt. Carlton Williams said emergency dispatchers received two 911 calls about 9:50 a.m. Wednesday reporting a man was walking along a major street near the East Carolina University campus carrying an assault rifle.
Within minutes, the campus alert system was activated, with announcements broadcast over loudspeakers advising students, faculty and staff to stay inside and lock their doors. Written alerts were also sent to campus e-mail accounts and as test messages to cell phones. Nearby elementary schools and a middle school were also put on lock down.
Police soon reviewed traffic camera footage and isolated what appeared to be a man with a rifle sticking out of a backpack.
Dozens of heavily armed officers from at least four law enforcement agencies responded in force, sweeping campus buildings, searching buses and briefly surrounding a nearby house. Snipers took up positions on rooftops. A North Carolina Highway Patrol helicopter hovered overhead... [Salon.com]
