The change of command in Afghanistan is speeding ahead and General Petraeus should be in-theatre by 4th of July even as the House of Representatives cuts $4.1 billion out of the budget for that country to great extent based on reports that pallets of US currency are being shipped out of the country to Dubai and other offshore banking establishments. The House passed the Finance Reform bill yesterday but adjourned for the July Fourth recess without passing an unemployment benefits extension.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.):
"So the only reason the unemployment extension hasn’t passed is because Democrats simply refuse to pass a bill that doesn’t add to the debt. That’s it. That’s the only difference between what they’ve offered and what we’ve offered." [In Full @ The Hill]It's notable these cretins have NO PROBLEM allowing the US Treasury (cf. the American taxpayer) to go BILLIONS OF DOLLARS into debt bailing out financial institutions that, for all intents and purposes RIPPED OFF their investors, and even went as far as allowing them to 'fix' the problems they created (if you belive that..) but they won't bail out the VICTIMS of an economy that failed dramatically because of their action. You could just call it 'victim restitution' from white collar criminals and you'd be correct

Today, July 1st, is the beginning of the new fiscal year for the federal, and most state governments. New laws and taxes are being put into effect around the US. In San Francisco the Bay Bridge tolls will increase during some hours, and there will be a tax on "toast-a-chicks"... tanning beds, which are no longer considered 'medical devices'

BP relief well weeks away, hurricane hurts cleanup
(Reuters) - A relief well that might divert the gushing Gulf of Mexico oil leak is still weeks from completion, a top U.S. official said on Wednesday, as the season's first Atlantic hurricane disrupted cleanup efforts.
U.S. lawmakers also took a step toward making oil companies face unlimited liabilities from offshore spills like the one devastating the Gulf coast.
Hurricane Alex was delaying BP Plc's plans to boost containment capacity at its leaking undersea well and threatening to push more oil-polluted water onto U.S. shores.
A relief well, one of two being drilled, is less than 1,000 feet from its target but will still take several weeks to reach the spewing oil pipe, [In Full]

Aid from flotilla makes its way to Gaza
Humanitarian aid from the Gaza-bound flotilla, which the Israel Defense Forces raided when it attempted to breach its blockade on May 31, killing nine, began arriving in Gaza by land.
The cargo had been delayed while Israel, Hamas, and international aid organizations debated the terms of its release. Israel insisted that the aid should not be distributed by the Turkish Islamic organization IHH, which sponsored the flotilla, because of its ties to Hamas. The United Nations eventually agreed to distribute the aid.
The first items to cross into Gaza were 82 battery-powered scooters, for use by the handicapped. Israel had considered withholding the batteries and chargers for the scooters, fearing that they could be diverted to military use. [In Full]
