From the LA Times
State finance officials say California coffers will be empty in late July unless the projected $24-billion budget shortfall is resolved quickly. Schwarzenegger said that emergency borrowing would be too expensive and that his threat to block it was necessary to prod lawmakers into swift action.
A loan would only "give them another reason why we don't have to do it now," the governor said. "What we need to do is just to basically cut off all the funding and just let them have a taste of what it is like when the state comes to a shutdown -- grinding halt." [In Full]
The World Health Organization is expected to declare Swine flu, H1N1, a Pandemic today. Every continent except Antarctica has experienced at least one case now.
Yesterday an 88 year old right-wing nutcase with a history of anti-semetism and other quirks (a number of years ago he attempted to kidnap Federal Reserve officials) committed an armed attack on the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC. A guard was killed, another person wounded, the perp was critically wounded, is in the hospital, and has been charged with murder.
WASHINGTON – An 88-year-old gunman with a violent and virulently anti-Semitic past opened fire with a rifle inside the crowded U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday, fatally wounding a security guard before being shot himself by other officers, authorities said.
The assailant was hospitalized in critical condition, leaving behind a sprawling investigation by federal and local law enforcement and expressions of shock from the Israeli government and a prominent Muslim organization.
Washington Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the gunman was "engaged by security guards immediately after entering the door" with a rifle. "The second he stepped into the building he began firing." [In Full]
It's notable that the shooter had claimed long standing connections with the US 'conservative' organization "Liberty Lobby", which dates back to the "Cold War" and spews the same philosophic bilge as Ralph De Pugh's original 'Minutemen'.
"The Minutemen organized themselves into small cells and stockpiled weapons for the counter-revolution. Some members would attempt to intimidate their enemies by mailing them a piece of paper with a crosshair on it. The implication was the person should be aware they were "in the Minutemen's gunsights" [In Full]If Da' Buffalo remembers correctly it read: "Traitor Beware! Even Now The Crosshairs Are On Your Neck" with a drawing illustrating such as seen through a rifle scope.

Here's an interesting note for conspiracy theorists from the aforementioned book:
Are the talking head hatred freaks like Bill O'Reilly and Rush Limbaugh responsible? Alternet thinks so, along with many other Americans.
The Senate will pass a bill today putting tobacco under control of the FDA. Expect new restrictions on marketing and percentage of nicotine in that nicotine stick.
The White House and the government of Palau are denying any connection betewen a long standing aid program and Palau's acceptance of the Guantanamo Uighurs... The question is "why they just aren't allowed to go to their friends and community in New Jersey?"
The Federal Reserve was apparently involved in pressuring Bank of America to buy out Merrill Lynch Investments. The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is investigating...
