In The News:
Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the news and commentary audio files.

The bad news is "Congress is back in session"... and they will take up the repeal of the Obama Administration's Health Care plan. The good news is they won't be able to do it despite the, dast I say (dast! dast!) Republican demagoguery. Expect a vote of sorts on Thursday.

The President of China is arriving today for a four day visit. A informal dinner is planned for tonight and a state dinner tomorrow, which in a very un-diplomatic move, Speaker of the House Boehner say he will miss because 'he has other things to do'. The discussions which are sure to follow with president Obama will be about currency... ...whether the Chinese are artificially controlling it at a low value to their benefit, and intellectual property rights... 'bootlegging', which IS a major source of income for the Chinese considering they have this 'Communist" idea that "Property Rights" don't mean much.

With the legitimately elected government out and in-exile due to removal by a Pentagon JSOC team... a U.S supported dictator previously run out of the country returns. "Baby Doc" Duvalier is back in Haiti claiming that since there is no Haitian-elected government, and he is "President For Life" by his father's decree, he IS the president. Some international elements want him arrested for Mass Murder... No, Not the United States... and the international politics of Haiti just became much more complicated. More.

In OTHER News...

In news of local Police State activity... "If "Proactive Policing" doesn't fill their jail they can always get "Predictive"
Santa Cruz California police first in nation to try mathematical model to predict crime

Police recently submitted eight years of crime reports to an applied mathematics professor at Santa Clara University, and he is mapping the time, location and recurrence of crimes to help police predict crime and tailor their patrols. It's an emerging, national movement called "predictive policing." [In Full, San Jose Mercury-News]
(Editors Note: SCPD's media overexposed media representative Zach Friend a crime analyst? Boy oh BOY.. Not only is he the PD's spokesman but he's a "detective" and their "Crime Analyst" as well. Not something anyone sensible would care to admit, considering SCPD's '85% of homicides unsolved' record. He keeps close company with current Santa Cruz mayor Ryan Coonerty. You MIGHT say they're "partners in crime" [Snicker...])

Heh Heh... They said "Great Recession":
San Jose area bankruptcies set all-time record

By Pete Carey
01/13/2011

Bankruptcies filed in San Jose hit an all-time high last year, as more than 13,000 people and businesses were overwhelmed by debts in the third year of the Great Recession.

The flood of filings is a 16 percent jump over 2009, and court officials and lawyers expect this year to be as bad if not worse. [More @ San Jose Mercury-News]

Finally, a historical note that's been a long time coming...
Fifty years ago yesterday, President Dwight Eisenhower gave a farewell address in which he famously warned of the dangers of influence on our government by the "military industrial complex" and indirectly the advent of American Fascism.

(50 years later) Our current Secretary of War, Robert Gates, has proposed to retire this year and has recommended that his successors stop increasing the military budget.

Eisenhower didn't just bring this up on his way out the door. It was seven years earlier that he had remarked:
"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population. It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed 8,000 people."
But pulling these quotes out of context, as we like to do, misses the reprehensible context of the speeches in which they originated... [In Full @ TruthOut]
