In The News:
Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying audio files of the news and commentary.

Due to time constraints there will be no text news synopsis this morning...

However, there are a couple of news items to note:

Get used to being on the dole America - Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, Council of Economic Advisers chief Christina Romer, and OMB Director Peter Orzsag believe there is no relief on the horizon for jobs (at least this year).

Commentary, from Firedoglake:
Despite some rhetoric about a jobs agenda (which has faded into the distance recently), there continues to be no sense of urgency about the jobs picture. There are enough pieces of legislation (the $154 billion dollar extenders bill, the $100 billion “Local Jobs for America” Act) in the pipeline to stimulate growth somewhat, and the hiring around the US Census will provide a short-term boost, but official Washington seems more concerned with chasing the ghosts of inflation than doing anything meaningful to arrest the jobs crisis. So it goes on, despite the electoral imperative, from the perspective of the Democrats. [In Full with linkage]
More: Robert Reich - Expect 10% Unemployment until 2011 (Full talk, 1h 8m The Commonwealth Club of California, January 2010... 3m synopsis @ Youtube)

Finally, in case you just can't wait on the unemployment line due to culturally induced ADHD, and get busted stealing food (or, considering that this film leans to the paranoid Right/Libertarian side of the American political equation, that Isod shirt or assault rifle you just had to have) KBDI, Public Television for Colorado, has decided to broadcast "Camp FEMA: American Lockdown"

It's notable that the producer of this film would have you believe that this is a recent development under the Obama administration (note that "...homeschoolers, gun rights activists and anti-abortionists..." are the focus of the blurb below), but the presidential executive orders allowing for this treatment of American citizens has been in place for years and has been much discussed among the African American community and it's politicized hip-hop musicians (See: "Music is Still the Weapon" @ Foreign Policy In Focus for a globalized view from the Nigerian musician Fela).

Forced relocation, for one, has been practiced on American communities of color for years now. Just ask the unwillingly relocated residents of Chicago's Cabrini Greens, New Orleans, or the folks living along the 'Hurricane Belt' islands of the Southeast US.

Recent legislation attempting to legitimize the use of internment camps to detain U.S. citizens in the event of an uprising or civil unrest has many people asking what nation they live in.

In a country born out of political dissent, we watch our leaders in Washington slowly pass bills that label ordinary Americans as thought criminals and potential domestic terrorists for simply questioning the actions of their government. We see third party candidates and their impassioned supporters listed in secret government reports that call their allegiance into question and brand them as fanatics and extremists.

Senate committee hearings and official FBI documents further illustrate the mindset of our elected officials as they classify homeschoolers, gun rights activists and anti-abortionists as threats against the existing social and political order; by default creating an entire nation of radicals and revolutionaries - where everyone is a suspect… equally guilty until proven otherwise.

How has our government shown that they will deal with these people? The same way as every other totalitarian regime throughout history - marginalize their activities then lock them up. Prisons are being built; internment camps constructed and laws passed that deal severely with anyone who dares to step out of line or ask too many questions. [In Full]
There is a history, circa 2001, of the use and abuse of presidential orders and directives at the conservative Heritage Foundation
