In The News: Baghdad came under a bombing siege yesterday... The Iraqi military said "it had detained 11 Iraqi security force officers in connection with the bombings." and that's just the situation in Baghdad.

"In My Family of 45 People, I'm The Only One Who Voted" - In Afghanistan the elections are over with a low turnout despite the added presence of thousands of US troops to insure 'security'. "Afghanistan even had their first experience with Chad hangings" Hamid Karzai did not even get a majority of his own Pashtun tribal backing. More.

Other screw ups in a country the US infrastructurally has done NOTHING for but disrupt and destroy... The ballot boxes in the remote areas are being brought in for counting by mule train. The Afghanis have been begging for improvements in their roads and infrastructure ever since we've been there, but all the Pentagon and the US State department feel it's appropriate to do is blow things up, not repair things.

We're close to leaving anyway, so why bother... right? A majority of Americans now want OUT of Afghanistan. Sources The Australian, Press Trust of India, CATO (Conservative Think Tank), The Examiner.

The Cash for Clunkers auto buyback program ends 8pm Monday night (August 24 2009) and congress is unlikely to renew it. HOWEVER... If you want to turn in your old appliances, a 'Cash for Clunkers'-Type Rebate Will Be Offered for Household Appliances', "everything from refrigerators and dishwashers to furnaces and air conditioners."

Obama says he WILL get a health care bill to pass whether the rethuglicans and 'blue dog' Democrats... Nominal democrats on their best days, wish it so. But don't expect a whole heck of a lot in the way of insured medical care for anyone but corporate workers who already have over-priced plans.(He lists his points, and claiming the need for consensus, a "Public Option" is not one of them.)

Tom Ridge, former Homeland Security chief, is about to publish a book saying the Bush administration used his color coded alert system as a political tool during the 2004 presidential race against John Kerry.
Among the headlines promoted by publisher Thomas Dunne Books: Ridge was never invited to sit in on National Security Council meetings; was “blindsided” by the FBI in morning Oval Office meetings because the agency withheld critical information from him; found his urgings to block Michael Brown from being named head of the emergency agency blamed for the Hurricane Katrina disaster ignored; and was pushed to raise the security alert on the eve of President Bush’s re-election, something he saw as politically motivated and worth resigning over. Bush Admin. worse than our Nightmares

Back in the bad old days of Bush's corrupt gang, we on the left were pilloried for suggesting that the administration was manipulating terrorism-related news in order to win the 2004 elections. But when Tom Ridge says it . . .

In fact, I argued in summer, 2004, that when Ridge did raise the terrorism alert, it had the unfortunate effect of outing an al-Qaeda double agent who had been turned by the Pakistani government and was helping set a trap for al-Qaeda in the UK.

In turn, that caused the British government to have to move against the people it had under surveillance prematurely, harming the case. [In Full]
Licensing civilians to kill - The CIA hired Blackwater USA for a secret program to capture or kill al Qaeda leaders. EX-Director Hayden "...said he would have had to consult with CIA lawyers." before commenting too much on the legality of that.

He should do that soon... The Washington Post has more about the potential bloodletting (sic) in Congress over that revelation.

In light of the commentary...
Pirates... of the 'Cyber-space' persuasion:

Trading in The Pirate Bay (Torrent site) stopped over deal funding

Ground laid for clone attack

Less than a week before Global Game Factory X (GGF) is due to purchase The Pirate Bay, the deal appears to be spiraling rapidly towards Davy Jone's locker in a hand basket.

Swedish stock market authorities have halted GGF trading on suspicion the company doesn't have enough money to close the deal.

The stoppage came as an anonymous TPB user backed up the site's entire 900,000 file database into a single 21GB torrent file and uploaded it to the website.
The actual value of TPB, meanwhile, will have come into question following the news that a 21GB working copy of the entire site has been created and posted to the service.

"I suppose I wanted us to have assurances," the anonymous user who made the copy told TorrentFreak. "If the TPB deal disappoints us, we can just put it up again."

Such a database could allow hundreds of TPB clones to pop up over the internet with little effort. Indeed, TPB copies have been already been spawned as of this publication.

GGF intends to transform TPB by signing licensing deals with copyright holders. The company will charge TPB users monthly fees for access to the website. Users will also be able to earn credit for hosting and seeding files. Many TPB freeloaders are unsurprisingly opposed to torrent levies, and a prevalence of perfectly free TPB clones available would make abandoning the website a no-brainer.

Just in... The rationalization and implicit denial, Malawi Edition, from Inter Press Service:
KAYELEKERA, Malawi, Aug 22 (IPS) - "We are serious about the integrity of the environment," says Neville Huxham, the country director for Paladin Energy Africa.

"We're taking the uranium out of the ground, we're exporting it to be used for productive purposes, so we should be getting a medal for cleaning up the environment." [In Full]
