But there IS this:
They Won’t Even Create Jobs in the Military-Industrial Complex Anymore

By: emptywheel

March 8, 2011

You know how I have argued that our country does have an industrial plan, one that is commonly called the Military-Industrial Complex? The government dumps seemingly unlimited amount of money into selected projects. Defense companies make sure to spread the jobs created by defense contracts around, so members of Congress support those contracts in bipartisan fashion. And then we export things like jets–one of the few things we export anymore.

Only, if we allow defense contractors to use prison labor,
o
o
o
Funny. Obama told me that government can’t create jobs.

I guess that’s because they’re too busy undercutting private manufacturers with prison labor.

[After the commentary, Boz Scaggs notes a simple reality... 'Some things change for the better... some don't' But either way, "Some Change". Courtesy of the respective artists and KPIG Radio Freedom California Earth.]

» The civil war in Libya continues to fester as Muammar al-Gadaffi's forces re-take Zawiyah, a major oil facility and on of the few places with a major road going to it (or anywhere) from Tripoli which is 30 miles away. It appears the Libyan government is not falling so far and some of the tribal groups have reconsidered their support for the rebelling forces in favor of the regime.

al-Gadffi is allowing more access to areas under government control and has invited a UN mission to investigate his claim that al-Qaeda has given Libyan youths drugs and instigated the revolt. Meanwhile, in the UN, the West continues to prepare a resolution to push for a 'no fly zone' and potentially a UN sanctioned ground incursion, which Russia and China are opposed to. NATO is also meeting on the crisis. I'll bet you didn't know Libya was in the North Atlantic...

There's a large version of the inset map with North African petro-facilities available by clicking the thumbnail... The map key is here.

We should become familiar with that map as there is the very real possibility that "The United States (and it's allies) Will Take Libya’s Oil and Gas by Force". So while you're perusing that map of the region it would be worth noting that every inch of it would be hostile to invaders, especially of the Christian Crusader Invader persuasion.
The fact is that production costs here are no higher than two dollars per barrel of oil. In addition, Libyan oil commands particularly high prices on the world market because of its special qualities. Annual oil production in Libya is 77 million tonnes. In 2009, total revenues came to $31.5 billion. With the price per barrel now double what it was in 2009, the revenues from operation of Libyan oil fields have become simply fantastic.

Let’s take a look at how the Libyan oil that leaves the country is proportioned out. According to 2009 data, Italy bought almost a third of all Libyan oil (32%). Germany came in second (13.4%); France and China tied for third place (10% each); and Spain brought up fourth place (8.6%). Other European countries got 13% (Serbia, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Sweden and the Czech Republic).

The Americans received only 6% of Libya’s oil... [In Full @ Oriental Review]

» The Obama administration may loot the National Strategic Oil Reserve to maintain pump prices and what's left of Obama's tattered legacy (See: "Skyrocketing oil prices creating political risks for Obama") among US voters as the sun slowly sets on the American Empire.

It's notable those reserves, the last time checked, contained toxic and contaminated waste oil from car crankcases, PCB bearing transformer oils, nuclear waste oils and other non-usable slippery substances... at least as slippery as the companies who added them to the reserve.

But anyway... there's a reason WHY it's called a 'strategic reserve' and it's NOT because...

Well, I'll let James Kunstler elaborate:
President Obama's top aide, Bill Daley, floated out the notion that we might draw down America's Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) so that the imprudent folk who traded-in clunkers for new Ford F110s and Cadillac Escalades won't feel any pain from four-dollar gasoline.

Harken, now - a reminder to the rest of you out there who do not have tubeworms boring tunnels through your brain-pans: there's a reason the petroleum reserve is called "strategic."

We didn't stockpile that oil to pretend to be the world's "swing producer" for a month and a half, just to knock the price down twenty-seven cents a gallon so that soccer moms could feel more comfortable bidding for an Auslini Veneto crocodile leather handbag on The Shopping Channel.

Strategic was meant to imply when something really really bad happens, like a national emergency, say, with military overtones. [More @ ClusterFuck Nation]

» Secretary of Defense Gates is on his farewell tour of Afghanistan and has said... I'll let WorldCantWait tell it:
Secretary of War Gates announces extended U.S. occupation in Afghanistan

U.S. Secretary of War Robert Gates arrived in Afghanistan on Monday March 7th for a two day unannounced visit. He immediately stated that the U.S. and its puppet Afghan government have agreed to extend U.S. military involvement beyond the previously announced plan to end U.S. combat operations in 2014.

This should come as no surprise to any of our readers... [More @ TheWorldCantWait]
Meanwhile, the Afghani population (and a good part of the rest of the world) is enraged at the deaths by US air strike of nine children sent by their family to retrieve firewood. "On Feb. 18, 64 civilians were killed during a similar strike in Ghaziabad district of the province. Afghan investigators said the dead included 20 women and 29 children." More at Rawa (Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan).

Afghanistan's 'president' Hamid Karzai, as usual rejected the US apology but has not joined the counterinsurgency.

» Speaking of revolution, and women... In Egypt, a million woman march did not garner it's namesaked number of attendees and was closer to a "A protest by hundreds of Egyptian women..." in Tahrir Square and turned into shoving aand shouting match between the women who did attend and male hecklers. One protester said: "They said that our role was to stay home and raise presidents, not to run for president,". Some things change at an evolutionary pace.

Timothy DeChristopher Found Guilty for Climate Civil Disobedience
Faces a sentence of up to 10 years

7 March 2011
by Jamie Henn

published at the Huffington Post

On Thursday, a jury in Salt Lake City declared climate activist Tim DeChristopher guilty for his interference with an oil and gas auction held at the end of the Bush administration ( DeChristopher knowingly bid on parcels without intent to actually purchase them causing a delay and disruption in the sale of the land to oil drillers).

He faces a sentence of up to 10 years, to be determined by a judge.

The following is a transcript and video of Tim’s speech outside of the courthouse after the guilty verdict was handed down.

Tim’s words are reminiscent of the heroes of other social movements that used civil disobedience to achieve their ends. And they’re a challenge to all of us working to solve the climate crisis to consider our own willingness to go to jail for our beliefs (in fact, a website, Climate Direct Action, has been set up for people to sign up to learn more about how to take part in civil disobedience for the climate). [Here is Tim’s speech...] H/t: EarthFirst!
That's right... DeChristopher could get ten years in prison for what was essentially a non-destructive, non-threatening prank.

» Libya is in turmoil. The al-Gadaffi government is reinforcing the Tunisian border to stem the flow of mostly Egyptian refugees trying to get back to Egypt as the U.S. waits for permission to use US military aircraft to move them. Benghazi is still liberated but the region in between there and Tripoli (where protests are popping up then being suppressed as they occur) is contentious. The city of Brega is under siege with aerial bombings and artillery barrages.

» In Wisconsin the 14 Democratic legislators boycotting the vote on an anti-labor bill still aren't in the state and UNCONSTITUTIONAL warrants have been issued. The capitol police will be responsible as the Madison police have jurisdictionally washed their hands of the matter.

» Twenty two charges have finally been filed against Bradly Manning, the former military intelligence analyst accused by a mentally ill convicted felon ex-hacker of having supplied Wikileaks with the Collateral Murder video among other documents. One of the charges... "aiding the enemy". (The Guardian UK quipped "The charge sheet, like the original set of accusations, contains no mention by name of the enemy to which the US military is referring.")carries a potential death sentence.

The material Manning allegedly purloined was NOT classified and available to any officer or intelligence operator in the theatre. Bradley Manning is still being held at Quantico Brig in conditions tantamount to torture (See: Lawyer: Bradley Manning Forced to Spend Seven Hours Naked, Humiliated), but the military is denying it. There will be a rally outside the gates of Quantico on Sunday March 20... If you're in the area be there. The committee to free Bradley Manning has arranged for inexpensive charter buses from Washington DC to Quantico. Congressman Dennis Kucinich and Senator John Kerry have shown concern with the way this affair is being handled and Kucinich has requested a visit with the prisoner. Well within Kucinich's purview as a member of congress. No word on whether he has been given 'permission' or has managed to meet Manning yet.

»  Want Fries With That? The new unemployment numbers are out (and someone may have changed the way the numbers are derived)... 8.9% a full point down since four months ago and the lowest since 2007, with 280,000 new jobs of unknown pay scale created. Expect the Republicans to demand an end to the Economic Stimulus funding now.

» NASA just sent a rocket up to deploy an observation satellite named "Glory". It failed to shed it's outside casing and ingloriously fell into the Pacific Ocean shortly after launch

This is Razer Raygun saying 'Happy Motoring America...' Enjoy it while you can.
(...and try not to let your government kill too many 'dusky natives' in the process ok?)

From the administrator @ archive.org:
The archive.org site will be “read only” for approximately 24 hours starting early tomorrow morning (PST), Wednesday, March 2. We also expect it to be slow and somewhat error prone during this time.

All archive.org items are stored on at least two servers – a primary and a backup server. The backup servers will be unplugged and moved to a new data center location tomorrow morning. Once they’re in their new home, they will be brought back online as soon as possible. (This will probably take much less than 24 hours, we’re just being cautious in case there are unforseen issues!)

While the backup servers are offline you can still view/download items in the archive from the primary servers – you’ll be able to listen to concerts, watch movies and read books. However, new uploads or any changes to existing items will be held and not go public on the site until the backups are in place again. So you can “read” from archive.org tomorrow, but you will not be able to add to it or make changes to it.

Please note: while the backup servers are offline, all of our typical traffic will be going to half the normal number of servers. So we expect archive.org to be slow during this transition, and we expect to see errors. If you are seeing problems on the site, please try again on Thursday, March 3, before contacting us for assistance (because boy are we going to be busy!)

Thanks for your patience, and we look forward to returning to normal operations on Thursday.

In The News:
Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the news and commentary audio files.

» The situation in Libya is just about stalemated between military units loyal to Muammar al-Gadafi and rebelling citizens and 'turned' government forces, with everyone else just trying to stay the hell out of the way.

The al-Gadaffi affiliated troops have aerially bombed the city of Zawiyah throughout the last Libyan night but failed to re-take the city and "in Misrata, troops who support the al-Gadaffi government tried to advance Monday on rebels who control part of an air base on the city's outskirts but they were repulsed by opposition forces". Of the country's seven air bases, four are in the Eastern region now under rebel control...".

The Russian military is watching from a space-based platform (as the US also surely is)and they're saying the airstikes have not happened. Caveat: Firsthand reports a few days ago from a Libyan expat in contact with relatives in-country stated 'helicopter gunships'. Much more likely, and probably undetectable from space.

The U.S. is moving a naval assault group, including the USS Kearsarge, a "Marine Assault Aircraft Carrier" offshore.. It is transiting the Suez Canal currently, and the USS Enterprise, a fully outfitted aircraft carrier that will remain in the Red Sea. The Kearsarge will most likely be stationed in the Bay of Sidra. Also, air "assets" that may potentially be used for "No-Fly Zone" enforcement are stationed in Saudi Arabia.

Altogether they constitute a useless, civilian threatening, and potentially region destabilizing addition to US/UN sanctions but the smart money says:
The US and its western allies are talking about stronger measures to stop Gadhafi, including a no-fly zone. On Morning Edition, NPR's Steve Inskeep talks with former U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Christopher Hill, who says the allies are first trying to cut off Gadhafi's access to cash. He adds a no-fly zone could be set up and it might make practical sense. But Hill added this caution:
Inskeep: ...What are the risks of the U.S. getting involved in a shooting war, or anything resembling that in Libya?

Hill: ...the risk of getting involved in a shoot-em-up is the risk that it will help Gadhafi supporters say this is all being engineered by foreigners, and look, they're in the air right now, shooting at our airplanes, so I think you gotta be very careful that it doesn't appear that you are somehow leading this thing.
Hill observes Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the U.S. is going to do its best to avoid entanglement in Mideast conflicts... [In Full, NPR]
And in a BIG heartbreak for everyone involved, the "Voluptuous Ukrainian Nurse" who "took care of" Muammar al-Gadaffi has returned to her Ukrainian home. Diplomatic efforts continue

» In Tunisia the Prime Minister and two other ministers have resigned under continuing demands that EVERYONE involved in the previous government GTFO (get the fuck out). Presidential and parliamentary elections are expected in about five months... If everything goes as expected.

» In the thirteenth day of protests in Yemen there are gun battles in the streets of Aden, and in Oman, where there's been no trouble for decades under the rule of an apparently benevolent King, citizens are in the streets demanding social change as well. Symbolically, considering most of the people in the region have roots as nomds, a supermarket has been burned.

» In the U.S.... the House of Representatives will vote on a mini-continuing budget resolution with $4 billion dollars in cuts that would continue funding the US government's operations for two weeks but the Obama administration is seeking a one month resolution, potentially doubling the funding to be cut, while the longer term continuing resolution to fund the US government through the end of September is waiting in the wings... contentiously.

» Embattled Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker will deliver his "State of the State" address this afternoon and present his budget. Walker is threatening to fire 1,500 state workers to 'balance' a budget which his (Republican) Party was responsible for 'un-balancing' by giving tax breaks to corporate and business interests creating a projected shortfall in revenues which are being wielded like a club for these draconian cuts even as the governor reminds the state's workers of Ronald Reagan's firing of air traffic controllers while president.

What was I saying the other day about Madison's Chief of Police being a little tight in the jaw about finding out the Governor had considered seeding the crowd with "troublemakers"... BLOWBACK!
On Monday afternoon, the Capitol Police in Madison, Wisconsin refused to enforce an order to clear the Capitol building of hundreds of peaceful protesters who have been occupying the site to protest Governor Scott Walker’s plan to eliminate the collective bargaining rights of public employees.

Amy Goodman of Democracy Now! interviews State Rep. Kelda Helen Roys (D), who spent Sunday night in the Capitol building with other protesters. Roys describes what happened at four o’clock on Monday afternoon when the government gave the order to clear the protesters from the building:

And after several hours of the same sorts of scenes that we’ve been seeing all week—singing, chanting, drumming, speechifying—the Capitol police captain, Chief Tubbs, made an announcement, and he said that the protesters that had remained in the building, they were being orderly and responsible and peaceful and there was no reason to eject them from the Capitol.
o
o
o
Police attempted to clear the building of protesters on Sunday night, but they relented when the protesters refused to leave and allowed them to stay another night. On Monday, the police decided not to eject protesters already inside, but no additional activists would be allowed in... [More]

» Stan Goff, Feral Scholar, FORMER JSOC Special Operator, FORMER Marxist, and all around nice-guy, has a critique for y' all.

I just want to add my own thoughts to his screed and they are aimed directly at US Trade Unions...

An open letter to US Trade Unions: Better start expanding your 'organizing' beyond "Unions" now, else the dispersion of the energy put into this, at a nationwide scale, despite the fact that 6 or 7 other states have anti-union bills pending, will NOT reinvent the "Cheeze Revolution"[tm].

"Union resources are a Piper Cub against the business class’s F-16." (src below)

Awww don''t feel bad! Woodstock wasn't the same the second time around either so don't feel like something's wrong.

You'd better get the MASSIVE NUMBER OF UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE, UNION OR NOT involved, or your trade unions, as FUCKED UP AS THEY ARE, will be finished once and for all within a few years.

That means organizing FOR ALL workers, for their rights and benefits DESPITE THE FACT THEY PAY DUES TO NO ONE, and not just to get them to join some union or another so you can 'organize' them... That can wait.

Most union organizers think they ARE doing that... Hypothetically... Theoretically

Better get real... or get gone.

Can't do that? Fuck around with it and say you're doing it but your underlying motivations are just to build your 'worker base' before they have anything to thank you for, and YOU WILL LOSE IT ALL!

You have to have a job to pay the dues... right?

Sure as hell no one's gonna pay it from their welfare check!

One BIG Union folks, or else.

End of screed

Stan Goff (on why Trade Unions are fuck-ed because they went mainstream for the political clout):
Wisconsin – buzzkill

I’ll be the skunk at this party, what the hell. I don’t know how to cheer-lead.

The lefty-liberal-progressives of the US of A are pumped up by the show of defiance by public sector workers in Wisconsin; and other states are following suit with demonstrations and Democratic state legislators on the lam. Even the Egyptians are wearing cheese-head hats. I am proud of the Wisconsin workers, and that’s why my prognosis is all the sadder. They were undercut years ago by the Democratic Party and their own leadership.

The unions and the public workers are going to lose. I’d love to be proven wrong, and maybe my math is no good, but even if they don’t lose this one, the trade union movement in the United States has been a dead letter for quite some time now. This will be another triumph of ideology for the right, and a political triumph for the right, too – no matter how Pyrrhic the victory in the truly terrifying scheme of things for the next generation.

When the trade union movement decided to join itself at the hip with the Democratic Party, they brought this on themselves. They consistently spend members’ money on Dem politicians, making them a direct target of the Republicans, who represent many anti-union interests already, but who had now been given a direct political stake in busting the unions.

Business unionism, nationalism, and bureaucratism ensured that the hierarchy of the trade union movement would call to the hierarchy of the political party. Everyone became players in a game that the unions quite simply could not win. Union resources are a Piper Cub against the business class’s F-16. In no time at all, the unions came to depend on the Democrats, and on elections, instead of facing of against employers directly and without the legal sanctions that they accepted ever since Taft-Hartley.

Democrats pushed through one neoliberal measure after another, undercutting the unions, and like an abused spouse that can’t leave, union leadership sent their members back again and again to vote, vote, vote Democratic.

Enough grousing. Here are the numbers... [More @ Feral Scholar]
