The new Republican congress is opening today with a prayer and then they will read the ENTIRE Constitution aloud instead of getting to the business of running the nation... They might not like what they are reading... IF their reading comprehension is High School level or above. From here on all bills in the House will have to cite the Constitutional justification for the law. Not a bad idea, but liable to be nothing more than boilerplate after a while.
The Pentagon is sending 1,400 more Marines to the Southern areas of Afghanistan, most likely Helmand and Kandahar , but NOT to the North, where the CIA's Opium growing, smugglers-for-a-living friends and all-around-thugs, the Northern Alliance control the territory. More.
In Pakistan the Prime Minister caves in and rescinds the price increases on fuel which were threatening to take down the government. Whether the parliamentary coalition will continue to hold remains to be seen.
The Saudi press is reporting their government has captured a vulture with a band on it's leg holding a satellite linked transmitter. They claim it's part of an Israeli intelligence operation. Israel, and the band, say it's part of an Israeli university Vulture migration study.
The WikiLeaks 'wave' begins to wash up on American diplomatic shores. Our ambassador to Libya may be replaced over the 'tall blonde vivacious Ukrainian nurse who attends to Moammar Khadafy' gossip cable. That so-called diplomat has a name by the way... Gene Cretz. The regulators took the unusual step in response to the discovery that Pacific Gas and Electric Co. had erroneous records about the high-pressure gas line that exploded in San Bruno in September, killing eight people and destroying 38 homes.

U.S. military commanders accuse the military wing—previously known as the Mahdi Army and now rebranded as the Promised Day Brigades—of more recent attacks on U.S. installations in Iraq, notably with rockets supplied by Iran. Tehran has repeatedly denied these accusations.
U.S. officials say they want to ensure the cleric doesn't wield too much influence in the new government, by lobbying Mr. Maliki to keep Mr. Sadr's followers out of senior security posts. [More At The Wall Street Journal]
And for our next war... on Africa... the Pentagon and NATO will use the Afghanistan-Pakistan War model:
Washington and its NATO military allies have opened a war front across the Arabian Sea from Pakistan in the east to Somalia and Yemen in the west as the central focus of operations that began almost ten years ago. [1]
On October 1, 2008 the Pentagon formally launched its first overseas military command in the post-Cold War era, U.S. Africa Command, which takes in 53 nations and an entire continent except for Egypt, which remains in Central Command.
The second command’s area of responsibility reaches from the eastern border of Libya to the western border of China and southern border of Russia. From Egypt to Kazakhstan. The Horn of Africa region, including Somalia, was ceded by Central Command to Africa Command (AFRICOM), but the Arabian Peninsula, including Yemen, remains in Central Command.
Though the Pentagon’s Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa, now subsumed under AFRICOM and based in the Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti, includes thirteen nations in East Africa, the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Peninsula in its area of operations: Comoros, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Yemen. Operation Enduring Freedom, under which the U.S. conducts its greater Afghan war, encompasses sixteen countries: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Cuba (Guantanamo Bay), Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Jordan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, the Philippines, Seychelles, Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkey and Yemen.
The U.S. maintains at least 2,500 troops in Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti and in late 2009 deployed over 100 troops, Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) equipped for guided bombs and missiles and three P-3 Orion anti-submarine and maritime surveillance aircraft to Seychelles.
Washington was accused by Houthi rebels in the north of Yemen of participating with Saudi Arabia in deadly bombing raids against them in the northwestern province of Sa’ada in December of 2009. They stated American jet fighters launched 28 attacks in the province which included bombing the governor’s house and killing 120 people in one attack. [2]
Later in the same month the U.S. conducted cruise missile and air strikes with the use of cluster bombs in southern Yemen which killed over 60 civilians, mostly women and children. Another air strike was launched in March of 2010.
Leading American officials have demanded drone missile strikes in Yemen and several hundred U.S. special forces are deployed to the country.
The U.S. and its allies in NATO and the European Union are actively involved in the civil war in Somalia, across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen.
The Pentagon supported the Ethiopian invasion of the country in 2006 and launched two days of air strikes in January of the following year. In the autumn of 2009 U.S. special forces conducted a deadly helicopter gunship raid in southern Somalia.
The New Year in Somalia started with a fierce battle between foreign troops backing the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and al-Shabaab rebels, resulting in at 15 dead and 25 wounded. Inhabitants of the Somali capital reported that “the Mogadishu sky turned red [and] kids were crying and had been unable to sleep as the crackling of machine guns and barrages rocked throughout the city.” [3] [More]

But it's just a change in lower management! The Republicans take control of the House to a huge Gala banquet and reception with all their lobbyist friends, and the Lobbyists apparently picked up the tab (they surely will in the long run). They also had a prayer ceremony with Chief Justice Roberts in attendance, who then swore in the new Speaker of the House.
In the Senate, there will be a token opening session and then a two week recess as the battle lines get drawn over filibuster rules. Will there be filibustering of the filibuster hearings?

Jerry Brown, the new governor of California, is about to present his budget plan to reduce the TWENTY EIGHT BILLION DOLLARS in red ink on the state's account with a unique proposal. The returning and transferring of some state-run programs back to the cities and counties with their portion of the budget, leaving Sacramento free of the management responsibilities, but not the counties and municipalities which will have additional agencies and departments to manage the transferred programs. (Razer notes this could easily be fixed by laying off the state bureaucrats who handled the programs and transferring THAT money as well.)

The day before the day - The Republicans will take control of the congress tomorrow, where they will not only make everyone stand for a reading of the Constitution, but they will begin to attempt a dis-assembly of the ObamaCare Health bill that may have supplied health insurance for a small segment of the middle-class not already insured, and forced large numbers of low income workers to choose between eating and having a job due to the mandatory nature of the health care insurance requirement. Even still, it is better than what currently exists, and that's an indication of how little of a 'safety net' there actually has ever been in the U.S.
In a perverse dedication to the Constitution the House leadership has required anyone introducing a bill to include the "Constitutional justification" for the bill.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Roberts is warning the Republican to knock off the policy of blocking federal judicial nominees. The retirement rate is outstripping the reappointments. So far the Obama administration has had 65 judges approved and 96 are currently blocked by filibuster or other parliamentary means.
Speaking of Supreme Court Justices, "The Constitution" and other such "Goddamn pieces of paper", Supreme Court Justice Scalia said in a recent interview that Women's Rights are NOT guaranteed by the Constitution:

In the Senate, the first day of session is also the day when rules can be changed and the Senate will extend the period from the first day to perhaps a week as changes to the filibuster rules are hashed out.
The Pakistani parliament will dissolve within 72 hours unless the government compromises on fuel price controls and other issues such as independence for the Pashtuns in the West and North of the country... Pashtunistan.

The Swiss and Chilean embassies in Rome have been attacked with a series of small bombings and no one knows if it's anti-Christian Muslims or regional Anarchists with socio-economic axes to grind.
China has called on North Korea not to be provoked by the South's sabre rattling and HUGE, accelerated-pace war games even as the US Neo-Liberal media focus solely on the North's "typical bellicose rhetoric":

Congress is in adjournment and the nation IS safe, until the beginning of next year when the Republicans take control of congress. As a last gesture, congress DID pass the 9/11 first responder health bill. Obstructionist Senator Coburn finally backed down after he was 'confronted' by a hundred or so sick and dying first responders in his office who may have suggested that he might be deceased before them.
President Obama has gone on his one-week-delayed vacation in Hawaii.

The US tightens the noose on Iran's finances
The US Treasury Department announced new measures on Tuesday aimed at choking finances for Iran's military and for a shipping line that Treasury says engages in illegal activity....which DOES have a negative anti-American effect... in our Imperial war on the people of Afghanistan:
Treasury said it was targeting financial networks that support the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its national carrier, the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL).
"Both the IRGC and IRISL are major institutional participants in Iran's illegal conduct and in its attempts to evade sanctions," said Stuart Levey, Treasury's under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence [Ynet, Israel News]
Iran Stops Fuel Delivery, Afghanistan Says, and Prices Are Rising

KABUL, Afghanistan — Government officials expressed alarm on Wednesday about what they described as Iran’s unexplained ban on fuel exports to Afghanistan, asserting that at least 1,400 loaded tankers were parked on Iran’s side of three border crossings.
Abdul Karim Barahwe, the governor of Nimroz Province in western Afghanistan, said the Iranian authorities had started halting tankers bound for Afghanistan about 10 days ago. The effect is driving up fuel prices just as winter is setting in.
“We really don’t know the exact cause of the ban; Iran doesn’t officially say the cause of the ban,” he said. [The NY Times]

If you hang out much with thinking people, conversation eventually turns to the serious political and cultural questions of our times. Such as:How can the Americans remain so consistently brain-fucked?Much of the world, including plenty of Americans, asks that question as they watch U.S. culture go down like a thrashing mastodon giving itself up to some Pleistocene tar pit.
One explanation might be the effect of 40 years of deep fried industrial chicken pulp, and 44 ounce Big Gulp soft drinks. Another might be pop culture, which is not culture at all of course, but marketing.
Or we could blame it on digital autism: Ever watch commuter monkeys on the subway poking at digital devices, stroking the touch screen for hours on end? That wrinkled Neolithic brows above the squinting red eyes?
But a more reasonable explanation is that
(A) we don't even know we are doing it, and
(B) we cling to institutions dedicated to making sure we never find out.

The Weather... weather or not - There's flooding throughout Southern California, and in the North, where they're used to gully-washing rains it's starting to turn disastrous as well. The inland California agriculture industry has also been getting thrashed by this series of intense storms extending as far East as Nevada. Most mountain passes are closed and the California flooding has caused six counties to be declared disaster areas.
In Europe the weather has shut almost everything down. There are stranded travelers-cum-refugees at Heathrow and Frankfurt airports, and across most of Western as well as East Europe. Parts of the storms even extend into Asia where a 7.4 Earthquake has been recorded off the coast of Japan/Indonesia.
President Obama has signed the repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell this morning and it's expected to be acted on rapidly, as he just lost his "Dream"... The "DREAM Act" which would have made it possible to develop an army of immigrant teen killers bucking for citizenship in return for service in America's imperial army The US now needs all the gay folk it can convince that meeting people in strange lands and killing them is OK, even if the US government has to legislate Gays to be "OK" for military service.
The Senate also managed to pass a continuing resolution funding the government... until march, at last years budget levels. This leaves the upcoming Republican majority with the necessity of creating and passing a budget for 2010 AND 2011.
In light of that continuing resolution it would behoove us not to get sick until the full budget passes because by stalling the process with continuing resolution at last year's spending levels, none of the provisions of the Health Care Bill (among other bills passed by the Obama administration) will be funded... the programs didn't exist in last years funding.
The 9/11 First Responder bill providing medical care and some stipend money should be voted on today but Senator Coburn of Oklahoma is blocking it singlehandedly.

Even as the North Koreans remain silent, and all interested international pressure has been applied on them, the South Korea army still plans to hold a huge military drill:
(Reuters) - South Korea announced land and sea military exercises on Wednesday including its largest-ever live-fire drill near North Korea just as tension on the peninsula was beginning to ease after Pyongyang's attack on a southern island.But the US doesn't seem concerned how tense it gets on the Korean peninsula and says it's "Not time for 6 party talks" (After all, we ARE THE weapons merchant to the planet and must sell weapons systems... since it's all America seems to have to offer the world in the way of industrial output)
The land drill, involving three dozen mobile artillery guns, six fighter jets, multiple launch rocket systems and 800 troops, the largest number of personnel in a single peace-time exercise, will take place on Thursday and is likely irritate the North.
The scale of the drill and the timing, coming right after the tensely staged a live-fire exercise on Monday, indicate South Korea's conservative President Lee Myung-bak sees more political mileage in taking a tough military stance rather than reverting to dialogue, despite overtures from Pyongyang.
Lee's government was heavily criticized at home for a perceived weak response to North Korea's shelling of the southern island of Yeonpyeong last month.
"We'll be sure to deal a punishing blow if the North tries to repeat the kind of situation like the artillery shelling of Yeonpyeong," Brigadier General Ju Eun-shik said in a statement.

In the "Blame Iran" department... The UN sponsored embargo has forced the use of "High Aromatic" Gasoline in industrial and power generation use, smogging the horizon and clogging lungs.
Energy Policy in Iran Leaves Many Gasping
But even as such measures have begun to counter the worst of the pollution, a trickle of recent statements from politicians and officials have raised suspicions that the smog may have been of Iran’s own making, as officials ordered at least five of the country’s major petrochemical plants to switch production to gasoline after Western pressure led many of the world’s top refining companies to cut off Iran’s imports.
According to e-mails circulated to industry experts and reproduced on unofficial news sites and blogs, Iran’s new supply of domestic gasoline may contain high levels of aromatics — more than twice the level permitted by Iranian law. Burning aromatics in car engines produces exhaust packed with high concentrations of “floating particles” or “particulates” that, added to the typical smog caused by nitrous oxides and ozone, can cause a range of health problems from headaches and dizziness to more serious cardiac and respiratory complaints.
“Previous governments knew that petrochemical plants could produce this kind of gasoline,” said an oil industry expert who spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of retribution. “But Ahmadinejad has gone ahead and done it — despite the consequences — for his own populist and political reasons,” [More @ The NY Times]

The Winter Solstice happens today at 3:38pm PST and last night a 'blood red' eclipse of the moon happened, on the same day as the solstice, which hasn't occurred since 1638 (other sources say 1632).
President Obama gets the food safety bill passed, giving the FDA some teeth, even as someone somewhere (!) in Yemen has been talking about poisoning food in hotels and tourist facilities worldwide.
Tonight is the night the US government goes broke except that it's almost assured a continuing resolution to continue funding the US government at last years levels will pass the congress.
The New START Treaty will most likely pass in a vote today after a secret congressional briefing explaining the end results of not signing it... and despite continual whining from the Republicans.
The census numbers get released today. The numbers decide a host of government issues including how many congressional seats each state has.
Ambassador-without-portfolio former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson succeeds and the New Korean War is cooling down as the abandoned six party talks on nuclear disarmament get put back on the table.
The British have detained 12 a group of people, mostly Bengalis from India, in an alleged bombing plot.
