Al Franken will get to vote for Minnesota when that vote in the senate finally happens.
The president of Honduras met with Secretary of State Clinton and received assurance of US support (for any Democratically elected government... (who defines the state of the nation's democracy is unstated)). President Arias of Costa Rica may act as inter-state mediator in the presidential dispute.
Palau, the island that has offered to take the Uighurs has 'upped the price'. They want a 35 year full feature aid agreement with a large dollar package. The details at Associated Press.
In Sacramento California, the budget is still stalled and the governor is threatening to call a continuing summer session in the living hot-box hell that is the Central California Valley in summer.
The State of California will also examine Marijuana policy in an attempt to tax it or somehow derive revenue to ease the load on the state budget (letting all the pot war prisoners out of the already overcrowded prisons could help). There has been a promotional ad created for TV. "...they were rejected by the NBC affiliate in the San Francisco Bay Area, and by ABC affiliates in Los Angeles and San Francisco." (links to disputed advertisement)

Thought for the day: "Who really established the idea that a society could benefit hugely just by lying to itself, or simply pretending?"
{Click the thumbnails for full size images):
The American victory over manifest evil in World War Two was so total that there was no one else left on earth to compete with in making and selling useful articles...
...at least for a while. And it produced a middle class so well-paid that it could express itself in a vast spewage of plastic and leisure across the land. The human race will look back on this society with wonder and nausea for whatever remains of its time on Earth. For at least twenty years, though, this way of life has been running on fumes, inertia, and promissory notes.
The amazing thing is that these life-extension strategies worked, especially the past ten years when there was really nothing left besides a Ponzi structure of interlocked swindles and rackets.
When the time comes when we do look back to understand what went wrong, I think we'll see that the Woodstock generation went off the rails in 1980, with the election of the actor, Ronald Reagan, who really established the idea that a society could benefit hugely just by lying to itself, or simply pretending...

July 07 2009 Travus T. Hipp Morning News & Commentary: Our 'War On Drugs' Is Really A 'War On Drug Users' - An Example

The federal health care plan is a major focus for congress this week. Details.
President Zelaya of Honduras is still trying to return to his country. The the Honduran military has blocked the runways at the airport. It's notable that the US has PLENTY of runway available at their military installations, but we didn't let him use them... He will meet with Secretary of State Clinton this week. Meanwhile, President Obama Explains His Support for Ousted President of Honduras.
The Chinese Uighurs in the middle.

There are riots in the Xinjiang province of China where the Uighurs are a minority, but numerous . 156 people have been killed... mostly Uighurs, and over 1.500 arrested. Apparently they have been used as indentured laborers and a couple of them had been accused of raping a Chinese woman of Han (The dominant clan) extraction, which caused further disturbances. Details.
From Corporate Social Rsponsibility In Asia:
Buried in most reports is the fact that this particular outbreak of rioting has its genesis in a clash between dominant Han Chinese and ethnic minority Uighur workers in a Hong Kong-owned Guangdong toy factory in late June (which was reported in the Hong Kong press; see here, in Chinese only) [In Full]
The money for infrastructure repair via the federal stimulus project is being put to *good* use. $3.9 million dollars is about to be used for the roadsigns telling you that your money is being used for the repairs.
Other news from the KVMR news report @ 0730PDT: Six Americans have been killed in various areas of Afghanistan (The LA Times reports seven).

(What do you suppose this local is thinking? Roll over the image)
The war is spreading, and the US casualty count is rising, as the U.S. miltary contigents are defending the valleys with the Taliban holding the hilltops.
Al Franken is about to be installed as the new Senator from Minnesota, giving the Democrats a rather filibuster proof majority.

It's here [On 'The Founding Fathers' And Their Foibles - The Problem With Fame And Success Is By The Time You Achieve It... You're Old!], with an explanation for the delay..
I've excepted an article from ISN Security Watch on the State of Haiti this morning... Little spoken of in the US press because the nightmare that Haiti has become is almost SOLEY the responsiblility of US foreign policy and a US instigated coup a few years back (in a manner similar to the just failed, or soon to fail, attempt in Honduras.)
Here's what Stan Goff, EX-Special Forces, involved militarily in the coup, had to say about his involvement a while back:
In 1994, when my last Special Forces team, Operational Detachment Alpha 354, entered the Haitian city of Gonaives, I along with three members of that detachment waded through a huge and agitated crowd to encounter four soldiers and two plainclothes death squad members about to fire into that crowd with M-1 Garands. They were surprised to see us, and we took advantage of that surprise to compel them to lay their weapons down and submit to arrest. One of the plainclothes gents hesitated to relinquish his weapon, and I came very near shooting him. I’m only being honest - knowing this will put some people off - when I say that I now wish I had gone ahead and pulled the trigger. [In Full]ISN Security Watch, "Haiti’s Annus Horribilus":
Haiti has long been considered the Western Hemisphere`s premier basket case. Yet there was a hint of progress in recent years. Gang violence was receding along with kidnappings and robberies. A poverty reduction strategy to fight abysmal living conditions had earned the approval of IMF and World Bank decision-makers.
Then 2008 brought one disaster after another.
A worldwide spike in rice and corn prices led many import-dependent Haitians to riot, forcing the sacking of then-Prime Minister Jacques-Edouard Alexis in April that year and leading the government to virtually shut down for several months.
A foreign donors meeting was cancelled and four consecutive hurricanes in August and September killed 800 people, left $1 billion in damages and further paralyzed the economy.
The global economic slowdown curbed the flow of remittance money from abroad – a crucial income source for many of Haiti’s nine million residents. In sum, World Bank President Robert Zoellick said Haiti had reached a tipping point.
Elections and unrest
Haiti’s latest imbroglio concerns a legislative plan to raise the daily minimum wage from US $1.70 to $4.90. Business owners balked, leading Preval to seek a compromise.
Hundreds of students, already angered by cuts to medical school classes, have protested in response amidst gunfire and tear gas. Many also want an immediate end to the 9,000-strong MINUSTAH mission.
Also contentious was June’s second round of voting to fill 11 vacancies in the 30-seat Senate following April’s initial election – itself delayed by 18 months. Lespwa won five of the seats, meaning Preval now has further support for his economic plans and planned reforms to Haiti’s constitution that would strengthen presidential powers and streamline the election process in the name of better governance. 4,000 Marines have been inserted into Helmand province Afghanistan attempting to wrest control of the province back from the Taliban and in East Afghanistan, a new poster boy for why America makes wars... so we can dote and worry over captured US soldiers... Use them as raison d' entre to continue fighting a losing war
The AfPak war is lost, un-winnable, and they're lying about it... Radio Netherlands:
Pakistan is in the middle of a huge offensive against Taliban fighters in the border area with Afghanistan. United States drones are supporting the operation with reconnaissance and bombing flights. The military assumption is that the war in neighbouring Afghanistan will remain unwinnable as long as the Taliban in Pakistan have not been beaten, or at least reined in.
Afghanistan and Pakistan have become one and the same issue - in international political jargon already known by its acronym AfPak. RNW spoke to senior foreign affairs analyst Bernard Hammelburg. [Source]
President of Honduras Zelaya is supposed to return to his country today with a dignitary escort from the OAS, UN, and high officials of Latin American countries including the president of Argentina. The diplomatically isolated sitting government says will arrest him if he returns.
Meanwhile, the Honduran military is looking for an internationally legal "Out": "Leader’s Ouster Not a Coup, Says the Honduran Military"
US-ICE will raid less, audit employee documents more and go after the employers. 524 businesses have been targeted so far (correction, 652).
The Pentagon is taking a new tack in their "don't ask don't tell" GLBT policies and may scrap it after noticing the 'bleed out'. 264 US service people have been discharged since the Obama administration took the reins of the US government because they 'told'.
...and the truth finally 'wills out'.
The Cheney Energy Task Force, outed by JudicialWatch with maps and nomenclature for Iraq's oil infrastructure, had OTHER 'irons on the fire' as well:
'The New Yorker 's Jane Mayer later made another discovery: a secret NSC document dated Feb. 3, 2001 - only two weeks after Bush took office - instructing NSC officials to cooperate with Cheney's task force, which was "melding" two previously unrelated areas of policy: "the review of operational policies towards rogue states" and "actions regarding the capture of new and existing oil and gas fields." It's also the 'end' of the US war on Iraq.... right! The total investment? 4325 US soldiers killed, the continual looting of the US treasury at a million dollars an minute (or more) assisting in the destruction of the US economy, the destruction of Iraqi culture and society along with many archeological sites (There's a US military installation on top of the site that the Bible calls "Babylon") and a huge UNCOUNTED numbers of Iraqis killed and wounded.... "We don't DO body counts"... "General" Tommy Franks, an American war criminals said that. He's now a TV 'talking head' who's analysis of the Iraq war is just as criminally negligent and lacking in fact as ever. See the San Francisco Chronicle's "How many Iraqis died? We may never know"
By a tally of 5-0 Al Franken will be the new senator from Minnesota.
The North Korean ship suspected of carrying weapons to... wherever... has reversed course back towards Asia... Possibly towards Vietnam, a nation related to the Koreans by the moniker "Communist" only. The question arises... could the ship simply be a decoy or diversion?
The CIA report on detainee abuse and torture is due out today. Expect the MSM talking heads to tell us that we DID get 'valuable information'... Which in retrospect will only be a reiteration of the 'valuable information' that "Torture derives no valuable information from the tortured". However, the 'waterboardings' will continue until the information improves. See FindLaw, "Obama's New Euphemism"
In Afghanistan we've turned "old friends" into new enemies. A former anti-communist tribal leader from Afghanistan's "Cold War" era (when Osama bin-Hidin' was NATO's best buddy) is rumored to be the new leader of Afghanistan's resistance movement. Meanwhile, civilians in Pakistan are finding out that THEY are the target: Pakistani Taliban leader survives strike (which killed 80... mostly civilians, including children)
