Occupy Oaklandâs building occupation, an act of civil disobedience, was disrupted by a brutal police response yesterday. Protesters were met with baton strikes, shot with rubber bullets, and exposed to tear gas along the route. Police immediately issued denials that tear gas was used; however, as many victims can attest, it was used freely and without regard to safety of the diverse crowd, which included families and children.

The OPD and City have issued several false claims that need to be rebutted. OPD claim that there was no tear gas used, a fabrication easily refuted by video shot by protesters. Police also claim that several officers were injured by protestersâagain, there is absolutely no evidence of this claim, which is made at every demonstration and subsequently proven to be baseless... Senate kills measure to stop President Obama from raising debt limit«o» Secretary of Defense Panetta has announce a $5.25 billion dollar budget for the Marines and Army. That huge allocation come after major cuts in troops and a number of military weapons systems programs.
By Alexander Bolton
President Obama will raise the nationâs debt limit to $16.39 trillion after the Senate on Thursday killed a measure to stop the president from adding another $1.2 trillion to the total.
After just over two hours of debate, the Senate voted 44-52 to block a motion to disapprove the debt-limit increase, which the House passed overwhelmingly last week. Four Senate Republicans missed the vote.
The $1.2 trillion debt increase is expected to cover the nationâs borrowing requirements until after the November election. [Details]
Under the new budget, at least four new Predator and Reaper drone air patrols â each consisting of upwards of four crafts a piece â will be added to the militaryâs arsenal. As a result, the wars will rely less on on-the-ground marksmanship but on robotic planes controlled from command stations thousands of miles away. Under the sea, submarines will be outfitted with massive missiles and in the sky the US will get âimproved air-to-air missiles,â which will also be operated remotely...«o» The son of the US secretary of Labor and six others are being held by the Egyptian government. They were attending an international university in Egypt closed down by the Egyptian government for allegedly fomenting dissent. Will Seal Team Six 'Move' on this?

"The 3,000 kilometer Ring Road connecting Kabul, Herat, Kandahar and back to Kabul could be an excellent idea, if Afghanistan were at peace, if the Ring Road had been properly constructed (using 100% grant funds) and if project funds were not being diverted to the Taliban. Since none of these factors are present, this project, one of the most ambitious and costly American aid project in decades, should never have been proposed."In OTHER News:
Penguin Shits on Kentucky Senate
A penguin named Paula from the Newport Aquarium pooped on the state Senate floor Tuesday.
The African blackfooted penguin had been brought to the chamber Tuesday by Senate President Pro Tem Katie Stine, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
The Southgate Republican was presenting her resolution to honor the Newport Aquarium for its stewardship of sea life and penguins when Senate President David Williams told her the bird had âjust defecated on the floor.â [Get the Hehhehheh ...Hot Poop... Here]

Kucinich Announces Constitutional Amendment to Publicly Finance Federal Elections«o» Meanwhile, the SEVENTEENTH Republican presidential debate took place last night and there was a donnybrook right at the start when the moderator's first question to Newt Gingrich was not about his position on the issues, but about his philandering. Gingrich ripped into him to the applause of a Republican and Southern audience who instinctively already despise the media. More, and more still in the commentary.
On the eve of the second anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling known as Citizens United, which opened the floodgate of unlimited, shadowy corporate spending in public elections, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has introduced H. J. Res. 100, a constitutional amendment to rescue American democracy from corporate moneyâs corrupting influence.
âBecause of the decision by the Supreme Court majority in the Citizens United case, more money was spent on campaigns in the 2010 election than has ever been spent in a mid-term election.
Because of the Citizens United case, more money will be spent in the 2012 elections than has ever been spent in an election in the history of our country.
Because of the Citizens United case, American democracy has been put up on the auction block,â said Kucinich.
H.J. Res.100 would require that all federal campaigns âall campaigns for President, Vice-President, Senator and Representative â be financed exclusively with public funds and prohibit any expenditures from any other source, including the candidate. H. J. Res. 100 would also prohibit any expenditures in support of, or in opposition to, any federal candidate, so that interest groups will not be able to influence elections. It will maintain the First Amendment âfreedom of the pressâ and preserve the traditional role that the media have played in our electoral process. [In Full @ Dennis Kucinich's Site]

Musicians Value Freedom Over DollarsJackson Browne put it like this back in 1996... âItâs a war for your mindâ
With many major websites going into blackout yesterday over the proposed SOPA and PIPA (Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act) bills that are currently making their way through US Congress, it is perhaps unsurprising that a number of musicians have also been speaking their minds about the proposed legislation in the past 24 hours.
According to Spinner.com, Trent Reznor, MGMT, Nada Surfâs Daniel Lorca, OK Go, Amanda Palmer, Erin McKeown and the Lonely Island, the comedic band fronted by âSaturday Night Liveâs Andy Samberg, posted an open letter yesterday stating their opposition to PIPA and SOPA.
âWe, along with the rest of society, have benefited immensely from a free and open Internet,â the letter says. âIt allows us to connect with our fans and reach new audiences. Using social media services like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, we can communicate directly with millions of fans and interact with them in ways that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.â [In Full]

BREAKING: Police Fire Projectiles at Students from Occupy UC Riverside Protesting BoardSo... the question is begged...
www.dailykos.com
The cease-fire against California students appears to be over.
Students from UC Riverside, protesting today's Board of Regents meeting, were confronted by riot police, with multiple reports indicating they were fired upon with paint-filled bullets and other projectiles that injured several at the scene.
The students, many of whom are associated with Occupy UC Riverside, today protested and (ultimately) shut down a Board of Regents meeting where tuition hikes were planned to be discussed.
The meeting was adjourned when students who managed to get inside refused to be silent in the face of skyrocketing tuition costs. After the meeting was closed, the board members were escorted off of campus amidst what were, for most of the day, incredibly peaceful and nonviolent protests.
Here is a report from ABC's local affiliate on what transpired before police began attacking protesters: [In Full]
Whose side are you on?
"When a government becomes destructive of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.
Do you believe that the United States government takes better care of corporations, or human beings?
I donât know anyone who believes the United States government takes better care of human beings than it does corporations.
Do you believe that your vote counts as much as the votes of owners of transnational oil and gas corporations? Do you believe your vote counts as much as the money of owners of transnational oil and gas corporations?
The United States government is not a democracy.
It is a plutocracy: government by, for, and of the wealthy.
It is a kleptocracy: government by, for, and of thieves..." [Read Derrick Jensen's Statement]

#US Supreme Court Chooses #SOPA/#PIPA Protest Day To Give A Giant Middle Finger To The Public Domain
from the ridiculous dept
Weâve been talking about the Golan case, and its possible impact on culture, for years. If youâre unfamiliar with it, itâs the third in a line of cases, starting with the Eldred case, to challenge aspects of copyright law as violating the First Amendment.
The key point in the case was questioning whether or not the US could take works out of the public domain and put them under copyright.
The US had argued it needed to do this under a trade agreement to make other countries respect our copyrights. Of course, for those who were making use of those public domain works, it sure seemed like a way to unfairly lock up works that belonged to the public. It was difficult to see how retroactively taking works out of the public domain could fit into the traditional contours of copyright law⊠but today, on the day of the big SOPA/PIPA protests⊠thatâs exactly what happened (pdf). Sopa and Pipa protests not over, says WikipediaBut it HAS crippled the pimps and thieves of the Motion Picture/Recording industry... and their lobbyists:
After a 24-hour blackout, Wikipedia has returned to full working order but declared: âWeâre not done yet.â
The site had blocked its content for 24 hours in protest at proposed anti-piracy legislation in the US.
The encyclopaedia said the site had been viewed 162 million times, with eight million people following instructions to contact politicians.
The protest led to eight US lawmakers withdrawing their support for the proposed bills.
Two of the billâs co-sponsors, Marco Rubio from Florida and Roy Blunt from Missouri, are among those who have withdrawn their support after âlegitimate concernsâ.
But backers of the legislation, led by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), described the action as an âirresponsibleâ publicity âstuntâ.
The Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (Pipa) have caused considerable controversy among internet users and businesses since the plans were proposed in October last year. [More @ BBC]
The First Internet Strike in History a Success
Wednesday, January 18 2012
The Washington Post reports that Rep. Darrell Issa of California, who opposed SOPA/PIPA, has put out a statement saying, âThe voice of the Internet community has been heard,â and that there will be no vote in the House on the bills so detested by the entire technical and Internet communities.
âMuch more education for Members of Congress about the workings of the Internet is essential,â Issa says.

This is tech history, so Iâve collected screenshots for you of some of the many, many sites that are on strike today. The complete list, with links, is on SOPAstrike.com. I see media reports that Google and Wikipedia are on strike, but this strike turned out to be much larger than that.
Here is a representative sample, with links provided so you can follow up and learn more about why the Internet en masse is so opposed to SOPA and PIPA... [More @ GrokLaw]
