In The News:
Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the news and commentary audio files.
Due to time constraints, just a quick overview this morning.
» The Republican Party debates happened yesterday evening at the Reagan Library. Details.
» The raid on the Gibson Guitar Company and two of their Kentucky factories by the FBI has been explained, and it appears to be a misunderstanding. In Full. (The backgrounder for those who missed it is here)
» Former New Mexico Governor and Ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson is in Cuba attempting to free an American arrested for helping distribute materials considered subversive to the Cuban government and set up internet communications without the government's permission. Secretary of State Clinton says all deals with Cuba are on hold until the matter is resolved.
» Tonight president Obama will appear before a joint session of congress to speak about his job plan. Then he'll go on a thirty day speaking tour to push the need for immediate action... which should be obvious to anyone reading the news as the number of people applying for unemployment rose last month by another half million or so Americans.
Meanwhile... Things ARE getting a little testy out there:
Longshoremen storm Wash. port over labor disputeWill it be Pinkertons this time, or BlackWater? Time will tell, but there would be no tangible difference.
LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - Hundreds of Longshore workers stormed the Port of Longview early Thursday, overpowered and held security guards, damaged railroad cars, and dumped grain that is the center of a labor dispute, said Longview Police Chief Jim Duscha. Six guards were detained for a couple of hours after 500 or more Longshoremen broke down gates about 4:30 a.m. and smashed windows in the guard shack, he said.
No one was hurt, and nobody has been arrested. Most of the protesters returned to their union hall after cutting brake lines and spilling grain from car at the EGT terminal, Duscha said.
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union believes it has the right to work at the facility, but the company has hired a contractor that's staffing a workforce of other union laborers.
Meanwhile, the international union is investigating reports of a wildcat strike at the ports of Seattle and Tacoma. [Read It]
» In Libya the siege of Sirte is in a state of ceasefire while the people inside the city begin to experience lack of food and water. You know... The HUMANITARIAN CRISIS the UN resolution was supposed to prevent. Meanwhile Muammar al-Gadaffi has made a radio announcement to the effect that he is still in the country and exhorted his citizens to rise up.
TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Muammar Gaddafi resurfaced on the air waves to berate his enemies as rats and stray dogs and insist he was still in Libya to fight on, but he offered them no clues about where they could find him.
His defiant comments to a Syrian TV station came as the forces of Libya's new government tightened a siege on the tribal bastion of Bani Walid, where some suspect the ousted strongman and two of his sons may be sheltering. In exchanges of fire, Gaddafi loyalists in the town launched Grad rockets.
In what Syrian broadcaster Arrai said was a telephone call from Libya early on Thursday, the 69-year-old Gaddafi, who was toppled by rebels two weeks ago after 42 years in power, rallied supporters and said surrender was out of the question."Our resolute Libyan people, the Libyan land is your own. Those who try to take it from you now, they are intruders, they are mercenaries, they are stray dogs. They are trying to seize our ancestral land from you but this is impossible.[In Full]
"We will not leave our ancestral land,"
Remember... Capitalism causes the people the resources are looted from...
...To live with the environmental fallout. They ARE NOT happy about it.
