» What would you think if the Mexicans decided to hold war games that featured the invasion of the U.S. as a "national security" exercise? The U.S, the South Koreans, and six allied nations are holding their two week long semi-annual war games on the border of the Koreas with 60,000 troops. Do note there are so many active military troops in North Korea that the only way the West could ever win a war with the North would be in a Nuclear War. More in the commentary.
» In the last of the Wisconsin recall elections yesterday the two Democrats under fire successfully defended their seats, still leaving the Wisconsin Democrats one vote short of a majority in the state legislature.
» Yemen's president Saleh, still in a Saudi hospital, says he intends to return to the capital of Yemen soon, and when (or "if", the West and the Saudis are doing their best to dissuade him from starting a civil war) he does, his stated intention is to turn over the government to his vice president who is already running... the capital Sanaa. Meanwhile, the rebels control almost every other major city and town with the US having taken full charge of our war on al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula which is based in the country.
» Want fries with that promise? President Obama is in Illinois this morning where he has claimed he'll deliver a comprehensive job creation plan next month which will most likely include stimulus funding... which of course the Republican majority in the house, who control the purse strings, will torpedo... Leaving them hated by workers across America but smug in their mal-contrived 'win'. Meanwhile, as the president's speech seemed to focus on the federal deficit, no details of the job creation plan were spelled out. More at the Washington Post.
» The Libyan rebels have cut the highway from Tunisia to Tripoli at the city of Zawiya and there is fighting for control of the oil refinery there (go figure...). The NATO/CIA assisted 'rebels' have apparently begun an offensive from the East as well. They are only 30 miles outside of Tripoli which actually puts them in the city's suburbs.
Meanwhile, the use of disinformation and propaganda in wars has begun to wear a little thin on some commentators:
"The current processing of the information on Libya and Syria has marked a turning point in the history of war propaganda..." [ More: Journalists who engage in war propaganda must be held accountable]Here's some more critique of the reporting from and about Libya specifically:
Five months into the bombing campaign, it is no longer possible to believe the initial official version of the events and the massacres attributed to the "Gaddafi regime". Moreover, it is now essential to take into account Libya's legal and diplomatic rebuttal, highlighting the crimes against peace committed by... ...political leaders of the Atlantic Alliance [More]Even as the UN Secretary-General finally 'confronts' what NATO has done with the Libya resolution:
"The following statement was issued today by the Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon: The Secretary-General is deeply concerned by reports of the unacceptably large number of civilian casualties as a result of the conflict in Libya...
...He once again reiterates his strongly held belief that there can be no military solution to the Libyan crisis. A ceasefire that is linked to a political process which would meet the aspirations of the Libyan people is the only viable means to achieving peace and security in Libya." [In Full]
In light of all the war-related news, do note that the Pentagon and it's 'friends' in industry need your money.
For instance NATO has 1.2 million military personnel in Afghanistan (enumerated by province) which could not survive without continuously sucking taxpayers dollars like the vampires they are. Without your money they're simply lost: "Leon Panetta warns of 'loss of mission focus' should the Defense budget face further cuts"
That's not all... They seem to be losing money like a bunch of drunken soldiers on leave:
The AP revealed Tuesday that according to a report prepared at the request of former top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan Gen. David Petraeus, nearly $360 million in contract money for reconstruction and combat support had been lost to the Taliban, criminal groups, and local leaders since the war in Afghanistan began (AP, Politico, DT). A senior U.S. military official in Kabul told the AP that only a small percentage of the money had gone to the Taliban (ed. That's because most of it went to NATO's corrupt 'friends'), and that it represented only a fraction of the $31 billion in contract payments examined by the task force that conducted the review. And an audit issued Monday by the U.S. State Department and Defense Department found that the firm DynCorps International had failed to provide nearly 60 percent of the trainers for Afghan police that it had promised in a $1 billion contract signed in December 2010 (AJE, AFP). In OTHER News:
'Tahrir Moment' on a global scale anyone?
The "Indignados" of Spain say on September 17th they will set up camp outside the Madrid Stock Exchange to match... #OCCUPYWALLSTREET, which is apparently going global. More @ Adbusters Culturejammer Headquarters (and don't forget to bring a tent...)
Adbusters has also noted that another kind of encampment begins in Washington, DC in early October:
October 6 2011 | Human Needs, Not Corporate GreedOctober 2011 is the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan and the beginning of the 2012 federal austerity budget. It is time to light the spark that sets off a true democratic, nonviolent transition to a world in which people are freed to create just and sustainable solutions."I pledge that if any U.S. troops, contractors, or mercenaries remain in Afghanistan on Thursday, October 6, 2011, as that occupation goes into its 11th year, I will commit to being in Freedom Plaza in Washington, D.C., with others on that day or the days immediately following, for as long as I can, with the intention of making it our Tahrir Square, Cairo, our Madison, Wisconsin, where we will NONVIOLENTLY resist the corporate machine by occupying Freedom Plaza to demand that America's resources be invested in human needs and environmental protection instead of war and exploitation.
We can do this together. We will be the beginning." [More @ october2011.org]
Why should all this be occurring you might ask?
Because the economic 'crisis' America and other Western nations are experiencing is simply "Business as Usual".
Not only is it business as usual, Capitalism Is The Crisis!
