April 01 2011 Travus T. Hipp Morning News & Commentary: Political Nihilists - The Looming Budget Disaster Was Planned By The Republicans To Destroy The Presidency
In The News: Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the news and commentary audio files.
»The war on Libya is no longer named after Roger Dean art. NATO is calling it "Unified Protection". Maybe more appropriate if that's what NATO IS doing...
But they aren't: NATO HQ is saying planes can't fly in Libya because "the weather too is bad" which is all just as well because NATO has warned Libya's rebels (easy to do considering there are Western advisors all over the temporarily liberated areas of the country right now) not to attack civilians, or NATO will target THEM. Not that we really know who's killing whom on the streets of Libya's cities and towns.
Meanwhile BBC is reporting seven civilians were "allegedly killed" in an airstrike near Brega which has been lost to al-Gadaffi's forces with the rebels apparently routed and moving to reinforce other stronghold towns.
The opposition leaders have taken time to sell oil though... From Foreign Policy Magazine: "The Libyan opposition announced that they have signed an oil deal with Qatar, providing a much-needed source of revenue."
There are claims Libya's UN representative has resigned following Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa's 'defection' a few days ago, but Ali Abdussalam el-Treki, the former U.N. envoy denied the rumor and claimed he is trying to negotiate a ceasefire. Indeed word has it that a senior aide to Saif al-Qaddafi is in London for talkswith British authorities. More below the fold.
»The Fukushima reactor situation in Japan is bad and getting worse. Despite assurances that the water is safe to drink the groundwater under reactor #2 is allegedly 10,000 times the safe radiation limit, and groundwater 'gets around'. The US is sending concrete pumps that may be modified to pump massive amounts of water on the burning reactors, but nevertheless the global background radiation level keeps notching upwards
»The Mexican Attorney General has resigned. He was the top of the legal chain in Chiuauha where there has been an ongoing series of women being murdered. He did not get a single conviction. In the Mexican civil/drug wars he did no better.
»One week from today there will be a vote for a continuing resolution federal budget even as the Tea Party representatives threaten to renege on their votes unless their demands are met. If that happens the US government will shut down... It would suit the teabaggers either way. More in the commentary.
In OTHER News:
»According to Foreign Policy Magazine "Disagreement is emerging within the international coalition as to whether the U.N. resolution allows countries to arm Libya's rebels. U.S. officials have suggestedthat the United States will not take this step, while France says it intends to do so."
Meanwhile SecDef Robert Gates is a little 'tight in the jaw' about the prospect of a continuing 'relationship' with the al Qaeda and/or CIA (and/or simply both) affiliated Libyan rebels:
“Somebody else should do that,” Gates declared this morning when members of House Armed Services asked if Obama was going to order the Pentagon to begin training and equipping the Libyan rebels. The reason, the Defense secretary said, is that other countries can arm the anti-Qaddafi forces just as well as the United States.
Gates’ testimony, at the start of one of five congressional hearings on Libya today, offered a window into the smoldering administration discord on the topic... [Source]
However Gates' spokesman Jay Carney said, “We’re not ruling it out or ruling it in.”
In the meantime Senators on both sides of the aisle plead for a Libyan war because we're all depending on AFRI(OIL)COM, our command in Africa (which no country except the Western client state of Djbouti was willing to host) to make sure the oil flows freely to third world sweatshop nations so Americans like you and I (but not necessarily you and I) can afford our plastic jogging shoes and cheap shirts (among a plethora of other items) with dollars rapidly becoming valueless.
The US government has been looking for a reason to attack Libya for a long time... Including the preemptive use of NUCLEAR WEAPONS:
Barely acknowledged by the Western media, a planned attack on Libya using nuclear weapons, had been contemplated by the Clinton Administration in 1997, at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
The B61-11 tactical nuclear weapon ["Bunker Buster"] was slated by the Pentagon to be used in 1997 against the "Qadhafi regime":
"Senior Pentagon officials ignited controversy last April [1997] by suggesting that the earth-penetrating [nuclear] weapon would soon be available for possible use against a suspected underground chemical factory being built by Libya at Tarhunah. This thinly-veiled threat came just eleven days after the United States signed the African Nuclear Weapons Free Zone Treaty, designed to prohibit signatories from using or threatening to use nuclear weapons against any other signatory, including Libya."
