In The News: Thanks to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the commentary and news audio files this morning.
This weekend's news focus is liable to be Afghanistan with Secretary of Defense Gates in-country, the Khyber Pass closed, our spring offensive (Helmand... remember Helmand?) nonexistent, NATO bombing Afghan election workers, killing ten, and masses of people mill about outside Kabul Bank, the largest bank in Afghanistan, as the resignations of two top bank executives due to fraud and theft becomes known. More in the commentary.
Juan Cole at Informed Comment also has a good chronology of the Kabul Bank collapse HERE
The Hillary Clinton hosted Mideast peace talks come and go in two days but an agreement has been reached on a schedule for a complete set of new talks. Details.
The Russian wildfires are still going. The fires have destroyed the Ural's wheat crop, which along with other factors has driven the price of wheat through the roof in the world market. There have been 30,000 fires, leaving at least 3,000 dead and 1,000 homes destroyed.
Speaking of fires... Another Gulf of Mexico oil platform caught fire and spilled, or not... See below.
Also BP has taken the 'cap' off the Deepwater-Horizon-Macondo well to install a new blowout prevention device while a lab questions the safety of Gulf-caught seafood and BP blackmails America.
...and finally for this Friday: The following is an unpaid satirical announcement:
Did you ever have one of these media days?:
"According to the Coast Guard, a mile-long oil sheen has spread from the Vermillion platform in the Gulf of Mexico off Louisiana. Petty Officer Bill Coklough says the sheen is around 100 feet wide." [source]
...and other headlines simply read:
"Update 3:21 pm Eastern: The Coast Guard has spotted an oil sheen near an offshore oil and gas drilling platform in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana that exploded and caught fire Thursday morning." [source]
Well Hey folks! Razer wants you to try NEW "Sheen-B-Gone"
The US government did just that when those disgustingly pesky truthful headlines in the mainstream news (Reuters in this case) read: "Oil sheen spreads from platform after fire" the US government applied ample quantities of Sheen-B-Gone to the story and LOOK WHAT HAPPENED!
...and remember folks, "One cup of (diesel) fuel will cause a sheen that covers an acre of water" (source: Plutus Corp, minute 4:54)
All of this leaves the oil financiers and commodity traders aghast:
"The incident has happened at the wrong time," said Eugen Weinberg, head of commodity research at Commerzbank." (source)
...Like there's a right time... arrogant prick.
Meanwhile, British Petroleum, in the midst of enviro-financial panic, resorts to BLACKMAIL over their Deepwater-Horizon-Macondo rig/well 'oopsie!' (or they're going broke... unlikely.):
BP says drilling restrictions may threaten oil spill payments
BP officials hinted that the company may not make voluntary payments, which it had previously consented to in the wake of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, if Congress goes forward with plans to restrict the company's activities in the Gulf of Mexico. These payments include the $20 billion that BP promised President Barack Obama in a White House meeting that it would pay into an escrow fund to cover damages and government fines associated with the spill. BP executives say that if they are denied the right to drill in the Gulf of Mexico, which accounts for about 25 percent of the company's total annual profits, they might not be able to (emphasis mine/ed) find the funds to pay for these programs. ...Which leads directly to an item Razer calls "Got (uncontaminated) Fish & Shrimp?" (AKA "You've been lied to again"):
Lab Results Raise New Concerns Over Gulf Seafood
(Aug. 31) -- A Boston lab hired by the United Commercial Fishermen's Association to analyze coastal fishing waters says findings suggest the government's claim that Gulf of Mexico seafood is safe to eat may be premature... [In Full]
Did you ever wonder how that happens?
How the media, the government, and petroleum companies can simply 'make it up' as they go along while maintaining the straightest of faces.
It's quite simply really.
Corporations, including media corporations, are well known for their self-selection within the organization for sociopathic traits that thrive in such dysfunctional cultures, and so are the politicians who pander to them.
