The Clean Air Act, intended to ameliorate air pollution by forcing US energy generators and industrial companies to control their emissions output, came back into play yesterday in Congress after a ruling by the Supreme Court that the EPA DOES HAVE THE RIGHT TO CONTROL OF THE EMMISSIONS OF GREENHOUSE GASES (Therefore the EPA is planning to identify YOUR CAR as a 'hazard to human life'). The Republicans tried to block it's enactment in the Energy Bill and failed, but it doesn't kick in until 2016, by which time new regulations will be needed.
Arlington Cemetery's civilian administrator and his chief deputy have been fired due to mishandling of at least 200 soldier's remains including mis-identification and burial of 'knowns' in unmarked graves
There is ten times the amount of oil leaking from the Deepwater Horizon oil pipe into the Gulf of Mexico than initially thought (or perhaps they just bald-face lied).
Consider this fact from Open Secrets:
"About 40 percent of [Big Oil] donations went to Democrats. The top recipient of BP-related donations during the 2008 cycle was President Barack Obama himself, who collected $71,000....The oil and gas industry, of which BP is a member, reported $169 million in 2009 lobbying expenditures." [In Full]...and this fact too: A SECOND BP oil rig is leaking into the Gulf... The Ocean Saratoga, and there may be more... The Ocean Saratoga rig was built in 1976 and has been one of the rigs with ongoing leakage problems since 2004 operated by Taylor Energy.
Speaking of disasters... General McChrystal now says the Kandahar Afghanistan campaign will take much longer than expected... He's said something similar before but who's REALLY listening?
Perhaps he's stalling for an Afghan take-over of their war that WE created for them so they can declare peace.

The world teeters on the brink of a new age of rage

Far be it for me to make a dicey situation dicier but you can't smell the sulphur in the air right now and not think we might be on the threshold of an age of rage. The Spanish unions have postponed a general strike (ed. 6/11: Not anymore!); the bloody barricades and the red shirts might have been in Bangkok not Berlin; and, for the moment, the British coalition leaders sit side by side on the front bench like honeymooners canoodling on the porch; but in Europe and America there is a distinct possibility of a long hot summer of social umbrage.
Historians will tell you there is often a time-lag between the onset of economic disaster and the accumulation of social fury.
In act one, the shock of a crisis initially triggers fearful disorientation; the rush for political saviours; instinctive responses of self-protection, but not the organised mobilisation of outrage. Whether in 1789 or now, an incoming regime riding the storm gets a fleeting moment to try to contain calamity. If it is seen to be straining every muscle to put things right it can, for a while, generate provisional legitimacy.

To wit, General Stanley McChrystal's observation, gone un-noticed and uncommented by the average American: "We've Shot 'An Amazing Number Of People' Who Were Not Threats", and the American public's reaction to Arizona's unconstitutional state immigration law:

* 59 percent generally support the Arizona law.
* 73 percent approve of the provision “requiring people to produce documents verifying legal status.”
* 67 percent support “allow[ing] police to detain anyone unable to verify their legal status.”

one fatter, sassier
one that must be bought-out or dragged down
or taken from behind
rutting and strutting and stamping its feet
the great corporate person
a child of the titans
a force without rival
the great american god
the Opinion died, and was replaced
before it hit the sidewalk
before the dull thud and hopeless gasp
in lieu of flowers, the family of the deceased
ask that you begin to sway in a velvet curve of motion
and hum and sing, like machines being
born in a cave,
let your life recede from view
your loves, your dreams of a natural world
as you thrum the corporate song of life
the great edict in a bloodless memo
please, dance to a carefully selected tune
chosen just for you
dance within the lines already drawn
the tension is noted
the authorities are on alert
the corporate person cannot dream
it spies you in the dark
and clutches envy to its heaving, hollow chest
