"... security in Iraq may not be sustainable unless significant steps are taken to uphold the rule of law and human rights ..." - Human Rights Report of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, released December 14, 2009.
It's probably safe to say that most Americans think the US military involvement in Iraq is coming to an end this year - that the Iraq War is effectively over.
There are, however, some very nasty facts having to do with detention, torture and execution that must be considered in judging what will be happening this year for Iraqis and US soldiers.

"Over recent decades, the CIA has spent several hundred million dollars developing Jordan's General Intelligence Directorate. Al-Qaida Web sites described the intelligence coup as an "epic breakthrough" in penetrating both U.S. and Jordanian intelligence. Balawi was escorted to the fatal meeting by a Jordanian intelligence officer who was also killed in the explosion. He was a member of the royal family. King Abdullah II and a score of royals attended the funeral. The Jordanians led the CIA to expect precise information on the whereabouts of Ayman al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian doctor who is al-Qaida's second in command...."[In Full]

Powdery substance poured into engines of four costly pieces of heavy equipment
SANTA CRUZ - Vandals damaged four large and costly pieces of equipment at quarries owned by Granite Rock Co. near Davenport and Felton in recent days. The acts that could cost as much as $400,000 to repair, authorities said.
Employees of the Watsonville-based construction firm reported the damage Saturday, sheriff's reports show, after finding that someone apparently poured a powdery substance in the motors and transmissions of the heavy equipment. Graniterock reported damage to three bulldozers and an excavator.
The case is in the early stages of investigation and no motive is known, sheriff's Sgt. Dan Campos said.
"This is not typical vandalism; this is malicious wrongdoing we are taking very seriously," Campos said. "We have someone trespassing onto private property and vandalizing equipment that is clearly worth a lot of money. This is definitely felony conduct."
Campos declined to speculate on what substance was used.
The president of Graniterock, Bruce Woolpert, said he is aware of at least one other Felton area company that sustained similar damage but did not discover it until Monday. The case follows two others this summer at construction sites at UC Santa Cruz and on Green Hills Road in Scotts Valley, though Campos said it is too soon to tell if the cases are linked.
In the earlier cases, 15 pieces of equipment were damaged at a 16-home construction site during the weekend of Aug. 15, in what Scotts Valley police initially reported was caused by a mortar-like powder being poured into the engine block, gas or hydraulic lines. The damage caused a 1,500-gallon fuel leak and at least $500,000 in repair costs, officials said.
The UC Santa Cruz case was several days earlier and involved three pieces of equipment; no arrests were reported. [In Full]
