An overview of how US government works - At about 1 am on Saturday the House of Representatives passed the Health Reform Bill by 220 to 215 with one Republican changing sides in return for a promise of aid for his district. Thirty nine Democrats (including Dennis Kucinich... Who has reasons. See: Why I Voted NO (to health care "reform") thought their constituents don't need health insurance or perhaps most in their district can afford it without federalization. The bill now moves to the Senate where Lindsey Graham (R-SC) says it's dead in the water... MAYBE it will live again by the beginning of the new year. More in the commentary.
In Iraq the parliament has passed an election law which will allow for a somewhat legitimate national election in 2010. Ugly issues to be hashed out nationally include Kurdish claims to oil royalties and what to do about the Arabs relocated by Saddam Hussein.
On the Khyber pass between Pakistan and Afghanistan a fuel convoy was attacked over the weekend, again closing the road for the West's main military supply route to Afghanistan from Pakistan. There was suicide bombing in Peshawar and another bomber killed an anti-Taliban mayor in a Northwest province.But he is not, by definition, a terrorist... The Fort Hood shooter is in intensive care and is apparently a radicalized Muslim. He proceeded, after reportedly being insulted repeatedly, to kill 13 people and injure over 30 with his government issued side arms.
