A Synopsis Of This Morning's News...
H/t to ChrisM my MP3Angel for supplying the audio files.
«o» The US political news is mostly icing and no cake today, in regard to the known-to-be-meaningless "Iowa Caucuses" where the discussion revolves around Rick Perry's deciding to stay in and Michelle Bachmann's decision to get out... but there IS some news with content, and the Obama administration is making that news as the president makes a recess appointment of four people to the National Labor Relation Board (Details @ The Hill) which reestablishes the board. The NLRB hasn't been able to meet because there weren't enough members to form a quorum. President Obama also recess appointed a new chairman for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau... The new chairman is one of the people who designed the program. More about the 'dust-up' due to occur when the Senate returns to session on January 23 for what few hours they DO work, and more still in the commentary.
White House 'very confident' recess appointments were legal

By Amie Parnes

President Obama is confident he had the authority to recess-appoint Richard Cordray to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, White House press secretary Jay Carney said Thursday.

Republican leaders blasted Cordray’s appointment as an “unprecedented” and potentially illegal power grab by the president, but Carney said the White House is “very confident” that the law is on their side.

At the same time, Carney added, "I don't want to anticipate legal challenges we haven't seen yet."

Business groups say legal challenges to the recess appointment could come swiftly, and an official with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce told The Hill a court fight over the appointment is a near certainty. [More @ The Hill]
Also check the ugly comments from the Republican internet hit squad on that post. Not one word about the constitutionality of attempting to break the US government by blocking everything in congress to 'prove' the president is doing nothing, for their self-serving PR and election purposes.

«o» The Pentagon is looking at a leaner and meaner new budget so there are plans to cut back on much of America's conventional war making capabilities and in it's place we'll be fighting the wars we envision with unmanned drones (actually, the 'man' is sitting at a desk over coffee at an airbase outside Las Vegas) and "strike teams" like the Seals. Details follow. More at The Hill, including such choice words as: "Obama reiterated U.S. plans to shift focus to the Pacific region, with an emphasis on China as the wars in the Middle East near an end."

Speaking of SEALS, and Drones, and the depersonalization of war... A new low in American marketing:

"If this isn’t cultural decline, I don’t know what is. Check out this infomercial for a newly minted coin commemorating the death of Osama Bin Laden.

On one side it proclaims: “You can run but you cannot hide” etched above a golden image of Seal Team 6 – the kill squad who finally brought the elusive cat down. On the other side it reads: “Justice has been done” next to three iconic engravings of the Twin Towers, the Pentagon and Flight 93.

Before ordering your $19.95 limited-time-only-holiday-offer collectable, make sure to ask the operator if you can get some authentic Pakistani blood on the coin

or a piece of Osama’s cloak to wrap it in. Even better yet, bone fragments from an innocent civilian, preferably a child or housewife, caught in the crossfire.

Why not give these folks a call and jam the telephone line.

Or better yet, purchase a set and send it to your favorite neo-con wrapped in bloody dollar bills." [Adbusters...]

«o» The President of Yemen IS now saying he's NOT going anywhere after it was reported he was going to come to the US for medical treatment. It's now being reported that he's going to stay in Yemen and 'supervise the transfer of power' which has been delayed for a year so far due to his not 'supervising the transfer of power' to his vice president.

«o» Ecuador has fined the Chevon corporation $35 $18 Billion dollars for toxifying the countryside, which Chevon had appealed and lost. Now the Ecuadorian government is considering expropriating company facilities and going after Chevron's internationally banked financial resources. Will EXXON go to war with Ecuador? Stand by....

In OTHER News:

Something's loose... I think it's a screw...

Finally, and tragically... No word on whether the child was just exercising his right to "Open Carry". IF he was an active threat-on-the-police-blotter or HAD threatened anyone, the headlines would have trumpeted it.

Police Kill 15 Year Old Student At Texas School for possessing a pellet gun after he punched a classmate in the nose. The police say "The boy was 'brandishing' and they claim the eighth grader "engaged the officers and was shot" three times.

Including one to the back of the head:
The boy's mother, Noralva Gonzalez, showed a photo on her phone of a beaming Jaime in his drum major uniform standing with his band instructors. Then she flipped through three close-up photos she took of bullet wounds in her son's body, including one in the back of his head. [USAToday]
