» Last night the House passed the bill to raise the debt limit. Now there will be ninety days of meetings by twelve "selected" senators and congresspeople to work out the details to be delivered before Christmas or else... ?

Ezra Klein @ the Washington Post's WonkBook:
It's not just that Congress waited until the last minute, taking an unnecessary risk in a fragile economy. And it's not just that the tough decisions got punted once again. This is a bad bill at a time when the economy -- and the American people -- needed a good one. It's a bill that does too little now, and too little later, and it comes in lieu of an obvious, achievable solution that would have done better.

But with the details understood and the legislation on its way to a quick approval in the Senate, it's worth stepping back and saying what we all already know: This is a terrible, no-good, very bad deal... [Read On]
Economist Paul Krugman put it more succinctly and draws a much more severe conclusion:
"What Republicans have just gotten away with calls our whole system of government into question." [In Full]
Meanwhile in the 'Peanut Gallery' (in other words, where the 'civilians' get to watch in abject horror):
Protesters arrested for heckling Boehner from House gallery

Twenty-two protesters were arrested Monday and charged with disruption of Congress after shouting chants against Speaker John Boehner from a House of Representatives gallery, according to the Washington Post... [In Full]
"Charged with disrupting congress."? That isn't disrupting congress... THIS is. More @ Wikipedia

Now they'll all take an ILL-DESERVED vacation until after Labor Day with appropriations bills, trade bills with South Korea and Colombia, and hundreds of judicial and civil service appointments left hanging:
Within 24 hours, the Senate will follow the House’s lead — passing the compromise deal to raise the debt ceiling and heading out of town for its month-long August recess.

The August recess is not only the longest break Congress takes all year, but also its most important, as members spend extended time in their district and the political media searches for emerging storylines.

Polling suggests that members are headed back to districts packed with people who believe Congress is failing them. [More]

» There has been a suicide bomb attack on a 'guest house', meaning a place for travelling dignitaries and business people, in Kunduz Afghanistan. It was followed by a two and a half hour firefight. No word on how many 'guests' were killed but there are at least four dead and ten wounded. It may be that the Taliban is attempting to open a supply route through Uzbekistan, circumventing the less-porous-than-it-used-to-be Pakistan border. More at Foreign Policy's AfPak 'Channel'.

» Farmers, it's time to stock up... Homeland Security is finally moving to get control over the fertilizer ingredient Ammonium Nitrate. (The proposed rules as a direct PDF download from Cryptome.org are here) It also commonly used as a 'low' explosive by farmers for tree stump removal and the mining/quarry industry. This clampdown was supposed to have happened a number of years ago but farming and mining industry lobbying prevented it. For what it's worth, there are more ways to make explosives (US Army Improvised Munitions Handbook Download) than your government could ever prevent.

(Note: This electronic edition of TM 31-210 is anti-dedicated to U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein who authored a federal law that makes it illegal in certain circumstances to publish documents just like this one.)

» The new Health & Human Services secretary has announced that funding for birth control and other women's needs will be included in the ObamaCare package (If it ever gets funded by the House) without additional fees.

» The Syrian government has apparently used air attacks in the city of Hama on the first day of Ramadan leaving several hundred people wounded and twenty or thirty dead. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has asked Syrian president Bashar Assad to step down and the UN is also considering that move.
