Gadhafi strikes Libya rebels, NATO pounds Tripoli

June 08 2011

TRIPOLI, Libya - Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, increasingly cornered under a stunning upturn in NATO airstrikes, lashed back with renewed shelling of the western city of Misrata Wednesday, killing 10 rebel fighters.

The international alliance said it remained determined to keep pounding Gadhafi forces from the air, but would play no military role in the transition to democratic rule in oil-rich North African country once the erratic leader's 42-year rule was ended. [More]

Western, Arab talks to focus on Libya "end-game"

June 8, 2011

MISRATA (Reuters) - Western and Arab nations meet in Abu Dhabi on Thursday to focus on what one U.S. official called the "end-game" for Libya's Muammar Gaddafi as NATO once again stepped up the intensity of its air raids on Tripoli... [Read On]

Speaking of the Middle East and North Africa... Our wars in the region are causing turmoil at OPEC, leading to a further hike in prices shortly as they have been unable to set new, higher production limits for their members:
OPEC leaves output on hold, causing oil price jump

June 8, 2011

VIENNA (AP) - OPEC unexpectedly left its production levels unchanged Wednesday, causing oil prices to jump, as senior officials said their meeting ended in disarray, a stunning admission for an organization that places a premium on consensus decision making

OPEC officials said that because of a policy deadlock, the group will maintain present output ceilings with the option of meeting within the next three months to consider a hike.

"We are unable to reach consensus to ... raise our production," OPEC Secretary General Abdullah Al-Badri told reporters... [More from AP]
» In Yemen the 'worst possible' is seen as probable by the US as the government there begins to collapse and their military rapidly becomes toothless, leaving the CIA operating alone, and we ARE 'operating' assisting the Yemeni government with drone strikes and air strike around the Southeast regional villages where we claim al Qaeda allegedly operates from.

Speaking of al Qaeda, an author recently murdered in Pakistan claims in his unfinished book that the US-NATO wars serve Al-Qaeda's strategy.

» The Senate has defeated a bill that would that would have delayed new rules on reining in the fee that banks charge the businesses at the Point Of Sale for your debit card swipe from approximately $.44 to a flat $.12. Meanwhile, Mastercard says merchants are profiteering from the card fees. The new rules begin on July 21.

» The US is withdrawing our five hundred 'training troops' from Pakistan and it IS NOT voluntary, as we continue to pursue air strikes and drone attacks in the Tribal Autonomous Areas and Waziristan.

» Trade treaties for Colombia, South Korea, and other nations are being 'held hostage' by the Obama administration until there's a reinstatement of job training programs for US citizens whose jobs have vanished overseas.

Expect disinformation and you won't be disappointed. America's 'free press' just got a little less free as there are currently no equal time requirements for political broadcasts in the media being enforced, and now the laws requiring it will not be on the books at all.
FCC chairman agrees to strike Fairness Doctrine from rule books

By Gautham Nagesh

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski said his agency will remove the Fairness Doctrine from the rule books in response to a recent request from House Republicans.

"I fully support deleting the Fairness Doctrine and related provisions from the Code of Federal Regulations, so that there can be no mistake that what has been a dead letter is truly dead," Genachowski wrote in a letter Monday to House Energy and Commerce chairman Fred Upton (R-Mich.)... In global economic news related to the American economy:
China warns U.S. debt-default idea is "playing with fire"

SINGAPORE (Reuters) Republican lawmakers are "playing with fire" by contemplating even a brief debt default as a means to force deeper government spending cuts, an adviser to China's central bank said on Wednesday.

The idea of a technical default -- essentially delaying interest payments for a few days -- has gained backing from a growing number of mainstream Republicans who see it as a price worth paying if it forces the White House to slash spending, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

But any form of default could destabilize the global economy and sour already tense relations with big U.S. creditors such as China, government officials and investors warn.

Li Daokui, an adviser to the People's Bank of China, said a default could undermine the U.S. dollar, and Beijing needed to dissuade Washington from pursuing this course of action.

"I think there is a risk that the U.S. debt default may happen," Li told reporters on the sidelines of a forum in Beijing. "The result will be very serious and I really hope that they would stop playing with fire."

The Republicans' theory is that bondholders would accept a brief delay in interest payments if it meant Washington finally addressed its long-term fiscal problems, putting the country in a stronger position to meet its debt obligations later on.

But interviews with government officials and investors show they consider a default such a grim... [More]
Finally, Scott Horton, Harpers Law editor, talks about how we are fighting wars of choice for profits not to spread freedom.

Creds: Horton almost destroyed the DOJ under GW Bush and forced a review of their hiring practices. Funny thing he noted, the US Attorneys fired were in areas with high concentrations of immigration cases, and they were succeeding in their prosecutions. Apparently the Bush administration needed it's 'Straw Wetbacks' to pander to US Racists, and working folks easy to dis-inform about 'Mexicans taking our jobs".

Watch his talk in Los Angeles May 28 this year about how "America Picked This Fight" (fighting wars of choice for profits not to spread freedom) which makes it necessary that "The American Empire Must Be Stopped".

On the same topic... Empire, and it's evolution:
Americans have long believed that the very notion of empire is an offense against our democratic heritage, yet in recent months, these two words -- American empire -- have been on everyone's lips. At this moment of unprecedented economic and military strength, the leaders of the United States have embraced imperial ambitions openly. How did we get to this point? And what lies down the road?
