» The government of Yemen is about finished now that the 'tribes' have managed to circumvent the ring roads surrounding the capital Sanaa and there is fighting throughout the city. Those tribal groups are armed with more than Scimitars and Blunderbusses too. There have been RPG rounds and artillery fired at the presidential palace. The government MAY control six square blocks of the city, and none of the countryside. More.

» We know it's your country Hamid but we've got to bomb you to save you - America's NATO allies are beginning to waver on their support for the invasion of Afghanistan as Hamid Karzai orders a cessation of airstrikes on villages but general Petraeus says that the bombing will continue.

» Bad news for the US prison industrial complex where more than 40% of the imprisoned are there because of charges stemming from something related to... The War On Drugs, which is over. The UN has issued a panel report saying that criminalization of drugs does not work and drug abuse should be treated as a medical problem. The panel included former Secretary of State George Shultz, Kofi Anan, and Sir Richard Branson among others. The White House agrees in principle.

» Congressman Dennis Kucinich has a resolution on the floor of the House to drop all funding for our actions against Libya and remove ourselves within two weeks. Expect it to fail if only on partisan grounds. Republican Speaker Boehner has another proposal to force Obama to ask for War Powers under the War Powers Act. It would be difficult to rationalize our involvement at this point considering that the operation has already gone far astray of the UN resolution for "Protecting the civilian population of Libya.

Bishop of Tripoli: NATO bombs a Coptic church. Civilian Casualties.

June 1, 2011

Tripoli (AsiaNews) - "NATO has intensified bombings and continues to create victims. The missiles are falling everywhere and, unfortunately, not only affect military zones, but also civilian areas. The people in Tripoli are suffering, even if nobody talks about it. " So says Mgr Giovanni Innocenzo Martinelli, Apostolic Vicar of Tripoli. The prelate said that the bombing last night damaged several buildings, including a Coptic church located a few hundred meters from a military barracks.

The prelate emphasizes the active presence of more than three thousand migrant Filipino Catholics, working in different hospitals in the city and throughout the country. They attend Mass every week in the cathedral despite the bombings. For the prelate, "they represent the heart of the local Catholic community and are a testimony of love and service to the Libyan people who suffer."

Meanwhile, NATO today announced the extension of the mission to Libya by an additional 90 days. "This decision is a clear message to the regime of Gaddafi," said Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Secretary General of NATO. Underlining the humanitarian nature of the mission, the Secretary General appealed to all the Libyan people: "We remain united and we guarantee that the day when you can shape your future is coming."

On 30 May, Professor Angelo Del Boca spoke to AsiaNews about the unusual duration of this war. According to the historian, "the high cost of the operation against Gaddafi has transformed a lightening conflict into a war of nonsense by the media. What NATO hoped to achieve with the No Fly Zone has now been dissolved." [AsiaNews via UrukNet]
It's a Helluva way to "Protect Civilians". But that was NEVER NATO's intention, or ours.

» If you're going to Europe, don't expect salad at dinner time because there is a drug-resistant strain e Coli. It has already killed twenty and sickened hundreds. Northern Germany appears hardest hit but no on currently knows it's origin.

Cheese fire causes meltdown on A359

By David Wilcock
Friday, 3 June 2011

A lorry containing 24 tonnes of cheese caught fire on a rural road in Somerset yesterday morning. Four fire crews fought the putrid blaze, which forced the closure of the A359 at Galhampton Hill, near Castle Cary.

"The fire was spreading rapidly through the articulated lorry, subsequently setting the cheese alight," said a spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue... [Read more, and peruse the roadside fondue recipes, at the Independent UK]
