In light of the commentary topic:
A note of appreciation from the rich

Let's be honest: you'll never win the lottery.

On the other hand, the chances are pretty good that you'll slave away at some miserable job the rest of your life. That's because you were in all likelihood born into the wrong social class. Let's face it -- you're a member of the working caste. Sorry!

As a result, you don't have the education, upbringing, connections, manners, appearance, and good taste to ever become one of us. In fact, you'd probably need a book the size of the yellow pages to list all the unfair advantages we have over you. That's why we're so relieved to know that you still continue to believe all those silly fairy tales about "justice" and "equal opportunity" in America.

Of course, in a hierarchical social system like ours, there's never been much room at the top to begin with. Besides, it's already occupied by us -- and we like it up here so much that we intend to keep it that way. But at least there's usually someone lower in the social hierarchy you can feel superior to and kick in the teeth once in a while. Even a lowly dishwasher can easily find some poor slob further down in the pecking order to sneer and spit at. So be thankful for migrant workers, prostitutes, and homeless street people.

Always remember that if everyone like you were economically secure and socially privileged like us, there would be no one left to fill all those boring, dangerous, low-paid jobs in our economy. And no one to fight our wars for us, or blindly follow orders in our totalitarian corporate institutions. And certainly no one to meekly go to their grave without having lived a full and creative life. So please, keep up the good work! [There's more...]

Now, Today's News...

As of today more than 2 million unemployed Americans are at risk as the Republicans manage to block an unemployment benefit extension built into the Unemployment Insurance Stabilization Act leaving workers in the lurch this holiday season. On the OTHER HAND... The Senate also failed to ban earmarks... Meaning their WELFARE PLAN FOR CORPORATE 'FRIENDS' who donate to their campaigns will continue.

The Food Safety bill passed and it will give the FDA more food inspection privileges, puts new responsibilities on farmers and food companies to prevent contamination, and also gives the FDA power to oversee the safety standards regarding imported products. Three sources: Washington Post

The White House met with the leaders of both parties yesterday and they agreed to have more meetings, but No Deal. Just so you know... Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said they oppose any policy of leaving tax cuts in place for middle class people while raising rates for the wealthy.

The Don't Ask Don't Tell commission released it's report yesterday and almost all parties to the report seem to think there are no problems with open service for gays.

A second try by the Federal Cat Food Commission, formally known as the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform is still producing no reasonable results even as two dozen Conservative leaders plead with the Republican leadership to cut the Defense Budget... that's desperation.

Kamala Harris, San Francisco District Attorney, has declared victory in the California state Attorney General race under Governor-elect Jerry Brown making her the first woman, AND first minority person to hold the state's top law enforcement post. Harris said she will focus on reducing the state's tragically high inmate recidivism rate, and prosecuting environmental and white-collar crimes.

Quote of the day, from an opinion at the Economist UK in regard to the WiiLeaking of massive amounts of US State Department cables:
"I think we all understand that the work of even the most decent governments is made more difficult when they cannot be sure their communications will be read by those for whom they were not intended. That said, there is no reason to assume that the United States government is always up to good.

To get at the value of WikiLeaks, I think it's important to distinguish between the government—the temporary, elected authors of national policy—and the state—the permanent bureaucratic and military apparatus superficially but not fully controlled by the reigning government." [In Full]
