Also Asia... The new Japanese government is pushing for changes in their post-WWII agreements with the US. They're requesting three more months to look over a new agreement about our immense air force base on Okinawa and other Pacific outposts we have been freely using since the late 1940s.
The Obama meeting with the big boy bankers yesterday apparently did not change their attitude very much.
Reuters worded it this way: "Obama tells bankers it's payback time"
"The bankers appeared chastened afterwards..."
They appeared to be 'chastised' the LAST time too.
That's why they continue to make the BIG $$$ and are allowed to be the financial 'foxes' watching over our country's financial system (IOW, Because they're at the top of the 'faceman' sales chain... Penultimate liars.)
Maybe Obama will have better luck with his 'own'... Today he will try to strong arm the democrats in caucus over the Health Care Reform bill. Expect obstructionism from Joe Lieberman and a few others.
Remember the stink over the missing emails regarding the firing of federal prosecutors... The people investigating thought there were 22 million of them supposedly destroyed... they weren't.. they were just 'misplaced' along with perhaps another 29 million. More.

In Kabul Afghanistan, a popular 'dignitary/tourist' hotel was bombed.
...and in Pakistan, a bomber strikes at a popular market near a military headquarters.
The federal government intends to buy and operate a maximum security prison in Thomson Illinois a hundred miles from Chicago near the Wisconsin border to house Gitmo inmates... all 100 of them. The prison will most likely also be used to house the overflow from their own prison-industrial complex.
Of COURSE the Republicans are all over it like 'shit on flies'.

Republicans Assail Purchase of Illinois Prison for Guantánamo Detainees
Republican congressional leaders on Tuesday denounced the Obama administration’s decision to acquire an Illinois state prison to house some of the detainees now held at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.
“The American people and a bipartisan majority of the Congress have already rejected bringing terrorists to U.S. soil for long-term detention, and current law prohibits it,” said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell , R-Ky. “The administration has failed to explain how transferring terrorists to ‘Gitmo North’ will make Americans safer than keeping these terrorists off of our shores in the secure facility in Cuba.”
Senior administration officials wrote to Illinois Gov. Patrick Quinn to inform him that President Obama has directed the government to buy the prison in Thomson, Ill. In the letter, released Tuesday, Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. , Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates , Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton , Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the administration would upgrade security at the prison, which will mostly accept regular federal prisoners... [In Full]

Also The Democrats are saying they will place limits on the banking reform bill and congress has also passed the $1.1 TRILLION dollar Omnibus spending bill... $650 billion is unavoidable mandatory spending, but there IS $8 billion dollars in discretionary spending... 'earmarks', aka "pork".
How would Americans feel if the Chinese were doing this for the Indians? Last week Cuba arrested a US contractor working for A.I.D. (Agency for International Development) handing out communications gear, Cell phones, and laptops to Cuban dissidents.
Speaking of Native Americans... $1.6 billion will be paid to US NAtives for a 1996 suit due to the Interior ripping off their royalties for extractive resources. This lawsuit came about due to the occupation of the Interior department by Native activist, who then had access to the files in question and made copies, took photos. The question remains... WASHINGTON – The Obama administration has taken a definitive step to settle a long-running trust mismanagement class action lawsuit involving hundreds of thousands of Native Americans.
The Department of the Interior announced Dec. 8 that it had negotiated a settlement to the Cobell v. Salazar litigation, which could amount to a $1.4 billion payback to Indian plaintiffs involved in the case, plus another $2 billion to buy back fractured trust interests [In Full]
Quaker Indian Committee disavows Doctrine of Discovery, affirms United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People

PHILADELPHIA – Inspired by the actions of the Episcopal Church, a Quaker group has disavowed the Christian Doctrine of Discovery and voiced its support for the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
The Indian Committee of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends issued a Minute – analogous to a resolution – at its September meeting.
The committee “renounces the Doctrine of Discovery, the doctrine at the foundation of the colonization of Indigenous lands, including the lands of Pennsylvania. We find this doctrine to be fundamentally inconsistent with the teaching of Jesus, with our understanding of the inherent rights that individuals and peoples have received from God, and inconsistent with Quaker testimonies of Peace, Equality, and Integrity,” the Minute reads.
The Doctrine of Discovery was a principle of international law developed in a series of 15th century papal bulls and 16th century charters by European monarchs. It was a racist philosophy that gave white Christian Europeans the green light to go forth and claim the lands and resources of non-Christian peoples and kill or enslave them – if other Christian Europeans had not already done so.
The doctrine institutionalized the competition between European countries in their ever-expanding quest for colonies, resources and markets, and sanctioned the genocide of indigenous people in the “New World” and elsewhere.
As a spiritual corollary of the renunciation, the Indian Committee also expressed its support for the U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which was adopted by the General Assembly Sept. 13, 2007. The Declaration presents indigenous rights within a framework of human rights.
Only the U.S., Canada, New Zealand and Australia – countries with large populations of indigenous peoples with huge aboriginal land claims – voted against the Declaration’s adoption. Australia has since adopted it. [In Full]
The Pakistani army is calling off it's offensive in Waziristan for the time being... It being winter and the troops from the lowlands can't handle the mountain weather. Speaking of BIG bucks... In conference committee at the House of Representatives there has been an agreement on a $221 billion dollar spending bill. It will now go to the Senate and from there, the president.
As fighting continues in our AfPak war, 16,000 US troops have received their deployment orders and will begin arriving in Kandahar Afghanistan next week. The Pentagon has stated that a drone attack has taken out a top al Qaeda leader in Pakistan, but there is no way to confirm that. A while back the Pakistan government has reported that drone attacks over the last year has killed 647 civilians, and 12-14 ALLEGED 'al Qaeda' operatives. One wonders how that compares to the civilian/combatant kill ratio during the carpet bombing of North Vietnam.
President Zelaya of Honduras has been given "permission to leave the country" to go into exile... if he goes as an individual-in-exile, not president-in-exile... Currently, Mexico seems to be the destination of choice.

Meanwhile, Juan Cole lists the "Top Things that would Redeem Obama's Peace Prize"
The world has noted has noted the irony that President Barack Obama is delivering his acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize after launching an escalation of the Afghanistan war. Of course, the critique is a little misplaced, since the prize is for a specific policy success, not for being a pacifist.Why the "Stealth'? The Taliban has no radar... The US has been revealed to be flying 'stealth drones' out of Kandahar Afghanistan and the Iranians (quite legitimately) suspect the UAVs are being used to spy on their nuclear programs.
Still, Mr. Obama was clearly given the prize to encourage him in the direction of peace. It is the tragedy of the sole superpower that it is unconstrained by peers and so can launch wars of choice and shatter international law at will. It can be counseled but not blocked. He was awarded this honor as a counsel.
So here are the things Obama can do to redeem his prize... [In Full]
South Korea will return 300 troops to Afghanistan [Korea Times]. They HAD made a deal with the Taliban after a hostage situation a while back that they would withdraw permanently. They did withdraw, but apparently NOT 'permanently'. The Taliban IS NOT pleased and have implied they will target those forces and any other Koreans in the country.
Congressman Dennis Kucinich has introduced two bills in congress seeking to cease the funding and totally end the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. If it goes to debate (and that's a BIG 'if'), there will be record as to who supports the war, and who doesn't, and which congresspeople believe that the US can make wars without a declaration of such... but certainly don't expect more than a handful of congress-critters to eschew the military-industrial pork barrel for their district by a vote for either of these bills.
The Founders of the US Constitution intended that the power to wage war reside directly under the authority of the peoples’ representatives in Congress. The War Powers Resolution of 1973 (also known as the War Powers Act) has several provisions, but we’ll focus on this part in the section on Congressional Action:
…at any time that United States Armed Forces are engaged in hostilities outside the territory of the United States, its possessions and territories without a declaration of war or specific statutory authorization, such forces shall be removed by the President if the Congress so directs by concurrent resolution.
A concurrent resolution of Congress requires a majority vote of the members of the Senate and the House.

In case Tiger Wood's peccadillos took up all the news cycle time up in the news media you listen to and you hadn't heard, five Muslim-American students disappeared a few weeks ago a few weeks ago after leaving a note saying they were going to Pakistan and Afghanistan to join the Jihad. They have been arrested in Pakistan.

The Native Americans are going to get some money due them because of a 1996 class action suit filed by United Tribes of America over extractive resources stolen from their reservations without payment and allowed by the US Department of the Interior. The folks involved in the suit will receive about $1,000 bucks each, totalling $1.5 billion... Chump change. More, with linkage, at Jurist Paper Chase.
Secretary of Defense Gates is in Afghanistan and will visit Pakistan to explain Obama's strategic plan for a pullout by, allegedly, 2011. Former UnoCal consultant and illegitimate president of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai says 2024 would be better. Again, the Congressional testimony by UnoCal's VP for international affairs about their vision for Afghanistan and Central Asia/India/Pakistan is here (Page 31).
In Baghdad, the bombings continue against government installations perhaps indicating there MIGHT BE someone who doesn't want the U.S. to leave. More from Juan Cole @ Informed Comment where the headline reads: "127 Dead, 500 Wounded in 5 Baghdad Bombings".
Again, Da' Buffalo urges his readers to watch this BBC special about "Operation Gladio", an extremely covert Western/NATO/CIA operation in Italy and Belgium by 'stay-behind' soldiers that left hundreds of civilians dead in a effort to convince those countries citizens they were in danger and needed to be 'protected' from the likes of the 'Baader Meinhof gang'. They were branded 'far-left', and indeed, may have been, but they had also been infiltrated and supplied by various Western military organizations with 'intent to destabilize'.
...and in news of how US mercenary organizations (which are technically illegal under US law when they're employed by foreign governments but not when they work for US interests) evade criminal corruption scandals and keep their killers killing, from the Washington Post:
The State Department will not renew the contract of the private security firm that guards the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, follows allegations of sexual misconduct (Bacchanalian orgies/dbaw) by the company's guards and potential weapons shortages at the embassy.Isn't THAT special!
A senior State Department official confirmed the contract that ArmorGroup North America's contract would not be renewed for a fourth year when the agreement expires in June.

News of the contract's termination first came from the Project on Government Oversight, which obtained an e-mail that was sent on Tuesday by an ArmorGroup manager to company employees stationed at Camp Sullivan in Kabul.
"What this means to the vast majority of personnel here is that you will have right of first refusal, which means for most of you this change from one contractor to another will be mostly transparent -- you will continue your employment but change uniforms," wrote Frank Schaddelee, ArmorGroup's deputy project manager at Camp Sullivan.
