A Synopsis Of This Morning's News...
H/t to ChrisM my MP3Angel for supplying the audio files.
«o» The North Koreans have agreed to halt a large part of their nuclear weapons program in return for 250,000 tons of food aid needed due to a long term drought. There is also a trade agreement with the South in the works.
«o» The Greek economic bailout is working it's way through the European Union banking system with Finland being the most recent country to sign on, leaving France and Germany balking over technicalities for the moment.
«o» With gas prices rapidly approaching five dollars a gallon for premium, to a great extent due to our ability to make enemies in countries that have large quantities (Iran immediately comes to mind along with Iraq) no less a dwindling supply, there is a lot of pressure on the White House to tap the US Strategic Petroleum Reserves.
It's notable those reserves, the last time checked, contained toxic and contaminated waste oil from car crankcases, PCB bearing transformer oils, nuclear waste oils and other non-usable slippery substances... at least as slippery as the companies who added them to the reserve. There WAS news about the contaminants at the time of the federally mandated reserve checkup a few years ago, but all articles about that contamination have been scrubbed from the intertubz.
«o» Today is a day of action at for students at UC campuses around the state of California with a large rally expected at Sproul Plaza in Berkeley leading to a four day march to Sacramento to 'visit' with state legislators and perhaps the UC Regents.
«o» Two more US soldiers have been killed by their Afghan 'comrades' and most US troops working with Afghans are being pulled from those details.
More at Foreign Policy Magazine:
Two more NATO troops killed by Afghan gunmen«o» Andrew Breitbart, an emotionally disturbed radical right wing nutcase internet 'journalist' who published sexually explicit photos of US Representative Anthony Weiner leading to his resignation, has died at forty three of a heart attack. CNN with his obituary.
Friendly fire: A man wearing an Afghan army uniform and another wearing civilian clothes killed two NATO troops in southern Kandahar on Thursday, the latest in a string of attacks on international troops by Afghans believed to be members of the security forces (AP, AFP, Reuters, WSJ, CNN, BBC, Guardian, NYT). The attack came just hours after NATO allowed its personnel to return to work at Afghan ministries, following their evacuation in response to the killing of two U.S. servicemen inside the Interior Ministry in Kabul.
