A Synopsis Of This Morning's News...
H/t to ChrisM my MP3Angel for supplying the audio files.
«o» Then there were four... Texas governor Rick Perry will suspend his campaign for president, again 'suspend' means American taxpayers will be paying matching funds into the pocket of someone who isn't even campaigning.
But those matching funds COULD be a thing of the past if Dennis Kucinich has his way with a congressional amendment calling for ALL campaign money to be paid by the public, and NONE paid by corporations.
In other words, #Occupy Has A Posse!
Kucinich Announces Constitutional Amendment to Publicly Finance Federal Elections«o» Meanwhile, the SEVENTEENTH Republican presidential debate took place last night and there was a donnybrook right at the start when the moderator's first question to Newt Gingrich was not about his position on the issues, but about his philandering. Gingrich ripped into him to the applause of a Republican and Southern audience who instinctively already despise the media. More, and more still in the commentary.
On the eve of the second anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling known as Citizens United, which opened the floodgate of unlimited, shadowy corporate spending in public elections, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has introduced H. J. Res. 100, a constitutional amendment to rescue American democracy from corporate money’s corrupting influence.
“Because of the decision by the Supreme Court majority in the Citizens United case, more money was spent on campaigns in the 2010 election than has ever been spent in a mid-term election.
Because of the Citizens United case, more money will be spent in the 2012 elections than has ever been spent in an election in the history of our country.
Because of the Citizens United case, American democracy has been put up on the auction block,” said Kucinich.
H.J. Res.100 would require that all federal campaigns –all campaigns for President, Vice-President, Senator and Representative – be financed exclusively with public funds and prohibit any expenditures from any other source, including the candidate. H. J. Res. 100 would also prohibit any expenditures in support of, or in opposition to, any federal candidate, so that interest groups will not be able to influence elections. It will maintain the First Amendment “freedom of the press” and preserve the traditional role that the media have played in our electoral process. [In Full @ Dennis Kucinich's Site]
«o» A US Marine Sea Stallion helicopter with six on board went down in Afghanistan's Helmand province killing all on board. The Pentagon is saying that it was not brought down by 'enemy action', but there's hardly a place in Afghanistan where US troops go where they AREN'T being shot at.
«o» Another drone strike in Waziristan has killed 20 plus people including alleged leaders of the Taliban in Pakistan. But we don't know for sure, because those drone operations are run by the CIA, an ostensibly civilian agency which is not required to report to the US public. They're not required to report the cost of these "black ops" either.
«o» France had six troopers killed in Afghanistan yesterday even as the French military pulls out of it's combat role in the country.
«o» The #Occupy movement is planning a number of actions centering around the financial industry today in San Francisco and other major cities.
In OTHER News:
Just a short time ago, one of the hacked and leaked Stratfor security analyst emails showed their 'security experts' pre-supposing there are A LOT MORE people who would prefer to CyberAttack the 1% than get maced.
They're AbsoFuckingLutely right.
Popular file-hosting site Megaupload, probably known to our readers for a variety of reasons, has been taken down after the FBI charged some of its staff with copyright infringement and “conspiracy to commit racketeering.” Seven people have been charged, and four arrested (in New Zealand), and the site itself appears to be down as authorities around the world closed in on the site’s resources. (via Megaupload Taken Down On Piracy Allegations | TechCrunch) [More]FYI, Megaupload gets millions hits daily and claims 4 percent of all internet traffic.
What happened next can be described like this:
"Department of Justice shut down Megaupload. In return, Anonymous shut down the Department of Justice."...and that ain't all...
A sitrep from the interwebz:
The following sites were taken down in response to the FBI shutting down megaupload.comThere's a war on... right now. But the 'guns' are Low Orbit Ion Cannons (LOIC, a server torture testing tool... which a perfectly legal piece of software to own)

Anonymous attacks whitehouse.gov after taking down Department of Justice and othersWired has a good writeup... including an accounting of how those nasty charges that have nothing to do with 'cybercrimes' were rationalized... If you assume your government is telling the truth.
Hacktivists with the collective Anonymous are waging an attack on the website for the White House after successfully breaking the sites for the Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, RIAA and Motion Picture Association of America.
In response to today’s federal raid on the file sharing service Megaupload, hackers with the online collective Anonymous have broken the websites for the Department of Justice, Universal Music Group, RIAA and Motion Picture Association of America. “It was in retaliation for Megaupload, as was the concurrent attack on Justice.org,” Anonymous operative (ed. snigger) Barrett Brown tells RT on Thursday afternoon. FWIW, and just in case you didn't know many musicians don't care for the entertainment-industrial complex... as a matter of fact:
Musicians Value Freedom Over DollarsJackson Browne put it like this back in 1996... “It’s a war for your mind”
With many major websites going into blackout yesterday over the proposed SOPA and PIPA (Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect Intellectual Property Act) bills that are currently making their way through US Congress, it is perhaps unsurprising that a number of musicians have also been speaking their minds about the proposed legislation in the past 24 hours.
According to Spinner.com, Trent Reznor, MGMT, Nada Surf’s Daniel Lorca, OK Go, Amanda Palmer, Erin McKeown and the Lonely Island, the comedic band fronted by ‘Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg, posted an open letter yesterday stating their opposition to PIPA and SOPA.
“We, along with the rest of society, have benefited immensely from a free and open Internet,” the letter says. “It allows us to connect with our fans and reach new audiences. Using social media services like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, we can communicate directly with millions of fans and interact with them in ways that would have been unimaginable just a few years ago.” [In Full]

BREAKING: Police Fire Projectiles at Students from Occupy UC Riverside Protesting BoardSo... the question is begged...
www.dailykos.com
The cease-fire against California students appears to be over.
Students from UC Riverside, protesting today's Board of Regents meeting, were confronted by riot police, with multiple reports indicating they were fired upon with paint-filled bullets and other projectiles that injured several at the scene.
The students, many of whom are associated with Occupy UC Riverside, today protested and (ultimately) shut down a Board of Regents meeting where tuition hikes were planned to be discussed.
The meeting was adjourned when students who managed to get inside refused to be silent in the face of skyrocketing tuition costs. After the meeting was closed, the board members were escorted off of campus amidst what were, for most of the day, incredibly peaceful and nonviolent protests.
Here is a report from ABC's local affiliate on what transpired before police began attacking protesters: [In Full]
Whose side are you on?
"When a government becomes destructive of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it.
Do you believe that the United States government takes better care of corporations, or human beings?
I don’t know anyone who believes the United States government takes better care of human beings than it does corporations.
Do you believe that your vote counts as much as the votes of owners of transnational oil and gas corporations? Do you believe your vote counts as much as the money of owners of transnational oil and gas corporations?
The United States government is not a democracy.
It is a plutocracy: government by, for, and of the wealthy.
It is a kleptocracy: government by, for, and of thieves..." [Read Derrick Jensen's Statement]
