» Iraq attempts to become Iraq again - The Iraqi government has said that as of our withdrawal date from the country US citizens in Iraq including military contractors and combat personnel will no longer be exempt from legal action under Iraqi law.
» Republican John Ford serving on recess appointment as ambassador to Syria has been confirmed for the position. He may not get what the State Department wants... the U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria was vetoed by China and Russia.
» Today is the day that the labor unions have designated to show up at #OccupyWallStreet for a display of support. There has also been a call for a one day national student strike.
» Speaking of students... To understand #OccupyWallStreet we need to analyze American history, and the society it inculcated:
"...Loneliness, estrangement, isolation describe the vast distance between man and man today.
These dominant tendencies cannot be overcome by better personnel management, nor by improved gadgets, but only when a love of man overcomes the idolatrous worship of things by man....
...We regard men as infinitely precious and possessed of unfulfilled capacities for reason, freedom, and love.
In affirming these principles we are aware of countering perhaps the dominant conceptions of man in the twentieth century: that he is a thing to be manipulated, and that he is inherently incapable of directing his own affairs.
We oppose the depersonalization that reduces human beings to the status of things (ie. commodities) -- if anything, the brutalities of the twentieth century teach that means and ends are intimately related, that vague appeals to "posterity" cannot justify the mutilations of the present. Those are the words of the of Students for a Democratic Society collective in their founding document "The Port Huron Statement". Read it in full here.
We oppose, too, the doctrine of human incompetence because it rests essentially on the modern fact that men have been "competently" manipulated into incompetence -- we see little reason why men cannot meet with increasing skill the complexities and responsibilities of their situation, if society is organized not for minority, but for majority, participation in decision-making.
Men have unrealized potential for self-cultivation, self-direction, self-understanding, and creativity. It is this potential that we regard as crucial and to which we appeal, not to the human potentiality for violence, unreason, and submission to authority.
The goal of man and society should be human independence: a concern not with image of popularity but with finding a meaning in life that is personally authentic: a quality of mind not compulsively driven by a sense of powerlessness, nor one which unthinkingly adopts status values, nor one which represses all threats to its habits, but one which has full, spontaneous access to present and past experiences, one which easily unites the fragmented parts of personal history, one which openly faces problems which are troubling and unresolved: one with an intuitive awareness of possibilities, an active sense of curiosity, an ability and willingness to learn.
This kind of independence does not mean egoistic individualism -- the object is not to have one's way so much as it is to have a way that is one's own."
» Representative Eric Cantor has said he will not allow a vote on the president's job bill in the house. Period.
» A new survey has found that 1/3 of all Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans say fighting those wars is a waste, and despite that massive and unusual show of no-confidence by people who usually support the 'work' they've done, those wars are not over yet.
In OTHER News
It's official: MoveOn.org is trying to use us to push the democratic agenda (#occupyWallStreet) (reddit).
But the co-optation was not unexpected by yours truly. Here's a note I wrote to a friend in regard to what I observed at yesterday evening's #OccupySantaCruz "General Assembly":
Tempest... Meet Teapot.I just want it to be noted that #OccupyWallStreet is an important event in the history of US society. A spontaneous uprising that required minimal planning. HOWEVER, my sentiment is it generally CANNOT be duplicated for a number of reasons including situations like the scenario above, and solidarity with the actions in New York should be the primary focus.
I saw the face of every... how do I call it? "Organizational Usurper" there. If you want to talk about #Occupy at a local level then all the people responsible for intentionally destroying the working class along with their jobs and housing in Santa Cruz seem to lend at least their tacit support. Scott Kennedy... Mike Rotkin!
It's the equivalent of having the Egyptian government support the Tahrir Square protesters...
Here's a handy little fact sheet about how to tell if YOUR #Occupy event has been, or is in the process of being compromised.
An open letter and warning from a former tea party movement adherent to the Occupy Wall Street movement. (self.occupywallstreet)

I don't expect you to believe me. I want you to read this, take it with a grain of salt, and do the research yourself. You may not believe me, but I want your movement to succeed. From a former tea partier to you, young new rebels, there's some advice to prevent what happened to our now broken movement from happening to you. I don't agree with everything your movement does, but I sympathize with your cause and agree on our common enemy. You guys are very intelligent and I trust that you will take this in the spirit it is intended.
I wish I could believe this Occupy Wall Street was still about (r)Evolution, but so far, all I am seeing is a painful rehash of how the corporate-funded government turned the pre-Presidential election tea party movement into the joke it is now. We were anarchists and ultra-libertarians, but above all we were peaceful. So, the media tried painting us as racists. But when that didn't work they tried to goad us into violence. When that failed, they killed our movement with money and false kindness from the theocratic arm of the Republican party. That killed our popular support.
I am sharing these observations, so you guys know what's going on and can prevent the media from succeeding in painting you as violent slacker hippies rebelling without a cause, or from having the movement be hijacked by a bunch of corporatists seeking to twist the movement's original intentions. If you think this can't happen, it happened to the Independence Party and the tea party movement. Don't let it happen to your movement as well.
Here's how they turned our movement into a bunch of pro-corporate Republican party rebranding astroturf, and this is how I predict they are turning your movement into a bunch of pro-corporate Democratic party rebranding astroturf. I believe many of these things are already happening, so take note.
1- The media will initially and purposely avoid covering your dissenting movement to cause confusion about what your movement is about within mainstream audiences. It might feel like this is to enrage you and make you appear unreasonable. Perhaps you will feel even invisible.
2- While the obsfuscation is happening, stooges will infiltrate and give superficial support, focus and financial backing to the targetted movement. In the tea party movement's case, it was the religious Republicans and Koch Brothers. In this case, it's the Public Sector Unions (the organizations as quasi-human entities, not the members themselves) and Ultra Rich liberals who pretend to care, but frankly do not serve liberators and freedom seekers but rather the interests of those who run the Public Sector Unions and the Democratic Party. Democrat, Republican, these parties are all part of the same corporate ruling system. Case in point... [In Full]
