Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the news and commentary audio files.
The whole world is watching and the Egyptian government thugs want it to stop - It wasn't an exercise in Democratic process yesterday in Cairo Egypt as government supported goons moved into Tajir Square, the scene of massive demonstration for almost two weeks, and began attacking protesters swinging sticks, throwing stones and lots of Molotov Cocktails which had been constructed in advance and brought by cars... to an area ostensibly inaccessible to them. At one point there was gunfire heard. The Prime Minister apologized and claims to have withdrawn the goons, but in reality, the focus of their attacks changed to specifically target the foreign press. The rationale undoubtedly being if they can drive the cameras and reporters away they can use whatever tactics they like to break up the demonstrations. Expect more bloodshed one way or another. Al Jazeera has a live feed from Tajir Square (currently running news). If you want news reportage... Google it (last hour's reportage here). Robert Fisk: Blood and fear in Cairo's streets as Mubarak's men crack down on protests
The sky was filled with rocks. The fighting around me was so terrible we could smell the blood
Thursday, 3 February 2011
"President" Hosni Mubarak's counter-revolution smashed into his opponents yesterday in a barrage of stones, cudgels, iron bars and clubs, an all-day battle in the very centre of the capital he claims to rule between tens of thousands of young men, both – and here lies the most dangerous of all weapons – brandishing in each other's faces the banner of Egypt. It was vicious and ruthless and bloody and well planned, a final vindication of all Mubarak's critics and a shameful indictment of the Obamas and Clintons who failed to denounce this faithful ally of America and Israel.
The fighting around me in the square called Tahrir was so terrible that we could smell the blood. The men and women who are demanding the end of Mubarak's 30-year dictatorship – and I saw young women in scarves and long skirts on their knees, breaking up the paving stones as rocks fell around them – fought back with an immense courage which later turned into a kind of terrible cruelty.
Some dragged Mubarak's security men across the square, beating them until blood broke from their heads and splashed down their clothes. The Egyptian Third Army, famous in legend and song for crossing the Suez Canal in 1973, couldn't – or wouldn't – even cross Tahrir Square to help the wounded.
As thousands of Egyptians shrieking abuse – and this was as close to civil war as Egypt has ever come – swarmed towards each other like Roman fighters, they simply overwhelmed the parachute units "guarding" the square, climbing over their tanks and armoured vehicles and then using them for cover.
One Abrams tank (NOTE: An AMERICAN supplied tank) commander – and I was only 20 feet away – simply ducked the stones that were bouncing off his tank, jumped into the turret and battened down the hatch.... [More @ The Independent UK]
In Yemen today there has been a "Day of Rage" in the capital Sana'a protesting the 30 year rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, whose spokesman has said he will not run in the next election... a recurring tactical theme in the region now attempting to defuse the rage of being suppressed by various dictators-in-guise-of-legitimate-leaders for many years. Yemen is considered to be a hot spot because the American Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki is being hunted by US forces with a U.S. president ordered death warrant. The Death Warrant was signed by the president despite the fact al-Awlaki has NOT been charged with any crime at all.
Why don't you get rid of the REAL polluters? The automobiles. - The New York City Council has voted to ban smoking in 1700 parks and 35 miles (14 according to CNN) of beaches in an attempt to extend the indoor smoking ban.
Speaking of automobiles, and other things that might make one's lungs black, the House of Representatives began voting to block the EPA from using Carbon emissions as a standard for setting up air quality standards. The word from industry sources Here. "The Hill" reports: "EPA chief slams bills to block climate rules, affirms Obama's veto threat"
The vote to disassemble ObamaCare failed yesterday without a vote because the Republicans could not get the 60 votes necessary for a waiver of the Budget Act (paraphrase from Firedoglake) because of a Budget Act point of order; repeal would have increased the deficit by $230 billion in the first 10 years.

America, get used to living in a dumpster...
WASHINGTON -- Homelessness has significantly risen in the U.S. as a result of surging foreclosures and joblessness caused by the recession, but a new federal program designed to nudge people back from the brink of life without shelter is on the brink itself.
A new report, released by the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty on Jan. 26, found that a homelessness prevention and re-housing program funded by the 2009 stimulus bill needs more money to meet rising need. Instead, the program will likely be left out of the new federal budget... [More @ The Huffington Post]
