The Pakistan side of the Afghan war gets even more complicated. According to reports it appears the three people killed in the Helicopter strike on a border post that caused the enraged-response cut off of roads into the region by the Pakistani government were members of the ISI, Pakistan's CIA, which then somehow gave the Talib the opportunity (at least) to burn fifty five or more idled fuel tankers. It's notable that many of trucks moving material for NATO are independently owned by Pakistanis, and the Taliban is leaving them unscathed.
From Foreign Policy Magazine, who write of this as if it's ONLY the ONE helicopter attack incident that caused this imbroglio and not also due to ongoing attacks on, and the massive number of deaths of, Pakistan's civilian population:
Morning Brief: In attempt to repair ties, U.S. apologizes to Pakistan for helicopter strikeThe Afghanis are continuing to attempt a truce and allow the Taliban access to the government but the Talib are refusing to participate until all foreign troops are out of the country.

The United States apologized to Pakistan on Wednesday for a helicopter strike that destroyed a military outpost last week, killing two Pakistani soldiers and wounding four more. The incident has caused an abrupt decline in U.S.-Pakistani relations: The Pakistani government shut the main border crossing into Afghanistan, which the NATO-led coalition relies upon for its military supplies, demanding an admission of fault and an apology for the attack.
Pakistan holds that its soldiers fired warning shots to indicate to the two U.S. helicopters that they were in Pakistani airspace. The latest statements released both by the U.S. embassy in Islamabad and from Gen. David Petraeus, the head of the NATO mission in Afghanistan, appear to largely adopt Pakistan's version of events. Initial coalition statements said that the helicopters had fired on the post in self-defense (Ed. Most likely the ground-based controllers were lied to as in the Collateral Murder video released a while back by WikiLeaks).

Pakistan said in a statement on Thursday morning that it has not yet decided whether to reopen the border crossing in response to the U.S. apology. [In Full @ Foreign Policy]
This COULD 'trickle down'... The federal judge hearing the case of a Guantanamo prisoner has thrown out the confession of not only the alleged perpetrator but one of the witnesses testimony as well. The witness would have never been identified if the perpetrator hadn't been TORTURED. Tortured evidence is NOT admissible in civilian courts. That being the end result of Obama's decision to prosecute Guantanamo inmates in civilian courts
The "sludge flood" released by that aluminum manufacturing company's containment pool collapse in Hungary has reached the Danube but most of it has been contained. There are 5 known dead, 3 missing, and 4 villages essentially wiped out or in need of wiping. The toxic materials released are capable of burning skin and will undoubtedly damage the environment of the region.
New York City mayor Bloomberg and New York's governor are intending to add sugared soft drinks to the list of items one cannot buy with Food Stamps in an effort to curb child Obesity
The US Supreme Court heard the Westboro Baptist Church case yesterday and a decision will probably come down in February.
William Rivers Pitt:
Westboro Baptist Church did not reach its apex of infamy until the downhill run of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. When dead soldiers began returning home to be buried by their families, Phelps and his people were there to protest. Holding signs reading "God Hates Fags," "Thank God for 9/11," "Thank God for IED's," and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers," Phelps continued to proclaim that America is being punished for its tolerance, and did so at the funeral ceremonies. A number of groups, including a motorcycle crew made up of veterans called the Patriot Guard Riders, have gone to great lengths to shield grieving families from these protests, but no matter what, Phelps and his people are there, quite literally pissing on open graves.
Under normal circumstances, putting one word to paper about Phelps and his church would be a disgraceful exercise that serves to do nothing more than deliver attention to something that deserves to be shunned.
Today, however, is different, because Mr. Phelps and his activities are providing us with a chance to reinforce and celebrate the better angels of our national nature.
In 2006, Phelps and the WBC protested at the funeral of Matthew Snyder, a Marine who was killed in the line of duty in Iraq. The Snyder family brought a legal action against Phelps and his cohorts for their protest at the funeral of their son, and on Wednesday, the issue came before the United States Supreme Court. The Associated Press reported:
Supreme Court justices, in a rare public display of sympathy, strongly suggested Wednesday they would like to rule for a dead Marine's father against fundamentalist church members who picketed his son's funeral - but aren't sure they can...[In Full]
