Today is day the Iraq War ends, for the United States. Officially. Details.

A morbidly interesting note, US soldier deaths in the new "peacetime" Iraq will STILL be considered Theatre of Operations combat deaths.

Also see: "Of Wars, And Rumors Of Wars: It's Been Said That The War On Iraq Is Over... Then Why Is The Pentagon Coming For Your Children?" and "Obama's Iraq Speech: Don't Expect Him to Say the War Is Over"

From Harpers Weekly Review:
Two thousand seven hundred twenty-two days after U.S. troops crossed the Kuwaiti border into Iraq, U.S. combat operations there officially ended. Vice President Joseph Biden arrived to usher in "Operation New Dawn," during which the nearly 50,000 American troops remaining in the country will still be available for combat missions when requested by Iraqi forces. Al Qaeda in Iraq claimed responsibility for coordinated attacks in 13 towns and cities that killed at least 56 people, many of them members of the Iraqi police and security forces, calling the assaults "the wings of victory sweeping again over a new day." General Ray Odierno, the outgoing U.S. commander in Iraq, said that the formation of a new government there could still be months away. "If we get the government formed, I think we're okay," Odierno said. "If we don't, I don't know." A gunman killed six people and wounded 14 in the Slovak capital of Bratislava. Five soldiers in Afghanistan were charged with forming a "kill team" to summarily execute random Afghan civilians, a college student recently returned from a month spent filming Marines in Afghanistan slashed a Muslim cab driver in New York, and General David Petraeus revealed that he is "an Enya guy."

Dry run? Two Americans, apparently Muslims from Detroit, have been arrested in Amsterdam after their luggage was found to contain a cell phone taped to a bottle of aspirin and other odd stuff.

Three dozen National Guard soldiers and their weapons have shown up in Arizona to patrol the South border, to be followed by hundreds more. Meanwhile the mayor of Juarez was assassinated and the Mexican government has fired 10% of their national police force for drug trade influenced corruption after being trained by the US. Who do you suppose they'll go to work for now?

Alaska's vote recount begins today with the nomination for the State senatorship split between old line Alaska politics Lisa Murkowski and the Tea Party's Joe Miller.

Four Americans were killed overnight in Afghanistan, and the US military declares PR war on Wind Turbines in America

...And in Santa Cruz California, the police department confiscated a 72 year old disabled homeless woman's shoes and sleeping bag despite protestations that she would be right back from the 'powder room'. The police would not allow the woman's friends to hold the items for her, and were selective about what they took, leaving other, less necessary items, behind. Reported by Razer, at Razed By Wolves

Finally, exactly one century ago today former President Theodore Roosevelt essentially called on his fellow citizens to smash the nation’s rich.

In The News:
Thanks to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the commentary and news audio files this morning.

It was a bad weekend in Afghanistan with seven Americans killed in three separate incidents... with major attacks on bases in Khost and Paktia provinces. It rains in the region again as millions continue to be displaced. "President" Karzai's "Attorney General" has been forced to quit due to corruption accusations in regard to an investigation the country's Heroin trade.

The US FDA has decided they CAN do something about egg contamination, they'll begin inspecting major egg production facilities in the US, and they'll do it by 2012.

In our withdrawal from Iraq... Obama will tell us all about it in a speech tomorrow as Iraq's already non-existent government continues to dissolve.

More from The World Can't Wait:
Sunday, the Associated Press reported
"BAGHDAD - An American solider was killed in a rocket attack in southern Iraq on Sunday, the U.S. military said, marking the first American fatality since the last combat unit in Iraq pulled out of the country."
As the "last" combat brigade left Iraq, President Obama prepares to give a major speech next week. He probably won't claim victory; that would be laughable. He will claim that the U.S. is taking responsible action, now that the Iraqis are ready to "step up" and run "their own" country. This is the same plan the Bush regime had, but framed and re-branded, Obama-style, to cover a thoroughly illegitimate occupation. [source]
In Sacramento California, a state where funding for the health, education, and welfare of the state's residents is about to be razed (snigger...) again, the governor wants to spend $60 million dollars on the construction of a new death row and the legislature is considering a ban on plastic shopping bags.

Due to unavoidable time constraints, only the briefest of synopses this morning.

Former president Jimmy Carter DOES manage to make a deal with the North Koreans in regard to the repatriation of an imprisoned US school teacher.

Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico is in Cuba attempting to free an "American contractor" imprisoned for spying.

The sexy suburban Russian spy who was recently outed with her cell and traded back to Russia has resurfaced with less clothing on.

The half-billion eggs or so that were recalled for Salmonella contamination ARE going to be used, in processed and cooked American food products

A pretty stiff stash - A top aid to president Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan had been caught a while ago with 230,000 POUNDS of Heroin.. and now, after the Karzai government made arrangements for his 'exoneration', has also been outed as A CIA PAID OPERATIVE WITH 230,000 POUNDS of HEROIN.

More rain in Pakistan's four Western provinces exacerbate an already tragic situation.

In California Governor Schwarzenegger has met with top leaders of both parties to discuss the budget. At this pace, as of October, IOUs will be issued to state employees (and welfare recipients for the state's contribution to their meager stipend).

The state of California's new budget is proposing to spend $62 million dollars for a new death row.

More on that in the commentary.

While US Department of Homeland Security has focused on illegal aliens and drug wars at the South border, the Canadians have uncovered a plot allegedly linked to al Qaeda and a number of arrests have been made. One of the arrested was a former ‘Canadian Idol’ contestant who sang "an off-tune rendition of Avril Lavigne’s “Complicated” with – as the show’s website describes – some “nifty” dance moves."

In the Alaska senate race incumbent Lisa Murkowski seems to be losing by 1,668 votes with Marine veteran and Tea Party candidate Joe Miller in the lead. There ARE absentee votes, but they tend to be military votes, leaning towards Miller. The Murkowski people say she may run as an independent or write-in.

There have been more attacks in Iraq with six more Iraqi police and army casualties as the US CONTINUES TO PATROL with a token Iraqi in each patrol group.

Former President Jimmy Carter, who was attempting to free a US teacher imprisoned in North Korea, has been stiffed by North Korea's leader, who left town for diplomatic visit to China just as Carter was arriving.

Wikileaks has announced it will release 8,000 to 15,000 more Afghanistan documents while general Petraeus' new plan calls for paying the Talib not to shoot at us. More on that in the commentary.

Speaking of paying off all the "right" people... it appear we're going to pay EVERYONE in Afghanistan, but the government officials go first:
Mohammed Zia Salehi, an aide to Afghan President Hamid Karzai who was arrested last month on corruption charges, has been on the CIA's payroll for years, according to Afghan and U.S. sources. Salehi's exact job for the U.S. intelligence agency remains unclear. However, his case has reopened the debate within the Obama administration regarding whether the United States should press Karzai to crack down on corruption, or accept that it must cut deals with unethical officials in order to stabilize the Afghan government. Coming apart as we depart - There were 20 bomb attacks yesterday in Iraq, in 15 different cities, targeting the Iraqi 'government' military and police. More.

But will we ever REALLY leave?

Lets ask "General Ray":

General Ray Odierno speaks on CNN’s “State of the Union” August 22 2010:
“Can you foresee a scenario like that, that there would be some U.S. military presence, albeit much smaller, at 2020?”
ODIERNO: “Well I -- yes -- I think I don't know. I think it depends on what kind of presence you're talking about. If the government of Iraq requests some technical assistance in fielding systems that allow them to continue to protect themselves, some external threats, we could be here.”
See this interview for more including his view of Iran's involvement in Iraq and the potential that the US will keep 'troops just over the horizon' for the foreseeable future:

President Carter is in North Korea attempting to persuade the release of a US teacher sentenced to 8 years of hard labor for crossing the border from China without permission.

Yet another election day - The "Tea Party" Fails Fails Fails as John McCain takes the Republican nomination in Arizona. The "teabags" didn't do well in other places either. More.

Demand the IM-Possible - A top Marine general has estimated about 9 years more years until a withdrawal from Afghanistan is "possible".

As the US population grows older and slower there are new federal guidelines for the timing of stoplights and crosswalks, giving more time to pedestrians. More in the commentary.

Meanwhile, in Santa Cruz California there is an ongoing occupation of public space by the citizens of Santa Cruz displaced in the wake of unchecked gentrification.

Recently twittered: "Lighthouse Linda: 3 cops, 3 cars: 3 tickets at 4:30AM, one to pregnant D -with the threat she'll be jailed if she gets another tonight." (feed)

Yesterday's agenda with an update:
11:30 am pdt this morning - March to the police department to reclaim police-stolen property including political tabling materials confiscated as "abandoned" or "unattended".
Property is only available for claiming (after arrest confiscations etc) for FOUR HOURS EVERY WEEK! Two hours on Tuesday, and two hours on Thursday.

That's it! Four hours a week, for a town with a population of 55,000 and more still in the greater Santa Cruz area.

Put quite simply the Santa Cruz police department was unable to negotiate the return of confiscated property for approximately 12 people within the two hour 'window', and a number of houseless people will wait until Thursday or perhaps even another whole week to reclaim their important documents including personal identification, and survival gear including sleeping bags and clean clothes.

This is UNACCEPTABLE!

Here's the report from Peacecamp2010.

Here's the report by the Santa Cruz Sentinel.

A Sentinel reporter/photographer was present for about ten minutes during the 'occupation' of the Santa Cruz police department's lobby, and was not around to note that, 45 minutes later, and well within lobby hours, everyone was forced from the lobby and the doors locked, with a sign saying that the lobby would re-open on Thursday... Please use the on-site phone to contact an operator.

The operator ignored repeated requests from people who had already spoken with the property department to appraise them of the status of their claims, leaving even people who had already negotiated the return of their property without.

In The News:
Thanks to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the commentary and news audio files this morning.

Our enemies grow bolder as the situation deteriorates in Pakistan due to Monsoon damaged infrastructure. Cut off Pakistani army units and "frontier police" come under attack from the Taliban and Hakimi clan network in Waziristan.

The same is true in Somalia as attacks increase on occupying forces such as Kenya. A car bomb went off at a dignitary hotel in Mogadishu killing thirty plus people followed by a two hour firefight with al-Shabab fighters.

Meanwhile in Afghanistan, a Taliban ambush kills 30 workers on a road crew in Helmand province Afghanistan and it noted that 60% of Americans oppose war on that country as "The Wise Guy Who Armed the Afghan Mujahadeen...", Michael Vickers, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations/Low-Intensity Conflict & Interdependent Capabilities, appointed by President Bush, is reconfirmed by president Obama. Vickers will be in charge of America's worldwide secret wars (JSOC assassinations of US citizens, targeted drone strikes Etc), mostly against the "players" Vickers helped arm and train a couple of decades ago. (more on Michael Vickers and his 'war' HERE)

Is it a conspiracy? The "Egg Crisis" came along just as new regulations regarding egg production come online. More in the commentary.

A federal judge has suspended federal funding of Stem Cell research... again.

Florida, Alaska and Arizona's primaries occur today with the "Tea Party" Right going after John McCain in Arizona. More.

Finally, Chalmers Johnson has an interesting question for America:
"What harm would befall the United States if we actually decided, against all odds, to close those hundreds and hundreds of bases, large and small, that we garrison around the world? What if we actually dismantled our empire, and came home?

Would Genghis Khan-like hordes descend on us? Not likely. Neither a land nor a sea invasion of the U.S. is even conceivable.

Would 9/11-type attacks accelerate? It seems far likelier to me that, as our overseas profile shrank, the possibility of such attacks would shrink with it.

Would various countries we've invaded, sometimes occupied, and tried to set on the path of righteousness and democracy decline into "failed states?"

Probably some would, and preventing or controlling this should be the function of the United Nations or of neighboring states. (It is well to remember that the murderous Cambodian regime of Pol Pot was finally brought to an end not by us, but by neighboring Vietnam.)

In other words, the main fears you might hear in Washington -- if anyone even bothered to wonder what would happen, should we begin to dismantle our empire -- would prove but chimeras.

They would, in fact, be remarkably similar to Washington's dire predictions in the 1970s about states all over Asia, then Africa, and beyond falling, like so many dominoes, to communist domination if we did not win the war in Vietnam.

What, then, would the world be like if the U.S. lost control globally -- Washington's greatest fear and deepest reflection of its own overblown sense of self-worth -- as is in fact happening now despite our best efforts?

What would that world be like if the U.S. just gave it all up? What would happen to us if we were no longer the "sole superpower" or the world's self-appointed policeman?" [Continued]

What should we do with a half billion plus eggs when they're recalled? Details, and more in the commentary.

Could it be... Black Ops? Wikileaks founder has had an arrest-in-absentia order issued by Sweden for an alleged rape and molestation, and then almost immediately the order was rescinded.

Blackwater/Xe has been fined $42 million dollars as settlement with the US government for various charges even as the US hands them a new contract worth more than that fine.

But IT IS NOTABLE that Erik Prince, Blackwater's founder, and his family, have made a 'run for the border'.
"Erik Prince, the founder of the notorious security company Blackwater/Xe, has left the United States and is settling with his family in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates" (source).
Prince may think the the pressure is on for a U.S. gun smuggling indictment (CPA-owned Glocks to Turkish street criminals most likely) and go figure... The United States has no extradition treaty with the United Arab Emirates, one of it's main allies in the Middle East.

No nuclear war yet! The Russians and Iranians have begun loading fuel rods into Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant.

BP is working on the blowout protection valve at their capped Deepwater/Horizon/Macondo well.

New credit card rules go into effect today that allegedly favor the consumer... More.

Last, but certainly not least:

They must have been 'sampling the wares'. - "Canadian police find bears guarding pot crop"... "Officers were initially worried the bears might be dangerous, but quickly realized the animals were actually very docile and content just to sit around as the marijuana was seized..." (more)

Here's a timely tip from Stan Goff, Feral Scholar about our government's greasy habits and the cost of oiling our war machine:
The U.S. military consumes about 85 million barrels of oil a year, making it the biggest single consumer of fuel in the country and perhaps the world. According to an interdisciplinary panel convened by the Defense Science Board (DSB ), cheap oil has distorted the American military into a handful of super-killing steel monsters, with the majority of the forces devoted to the logistics of simply feeding and fueling them.

“The Army employed sixty thousand soldiers solely for the purpose of providing petroleum, oil, and lubricants to its war machines, which have themselves become increasingly fuel-heavy. The sixty-eight-ton Abrams tank, for instance, burns through a gallon of fuel for every half mile. With its inefficient, 1960s-era engine, the Abrams tank burns twelve gallons of fuel an hour just idling.

“So much time and money is spent fueling the American fighting machines that, according to the head of the Army Materiel Command, a gallon of fuel delivered to the U.S. military in action can ultimately cost up to $400 a gallon. Indeed, 70 percent of the weight of all the soldiers, vehicles, and weapons of the entire U.S. Army is pure fuel.” [In Full]

Senator Kerry has delivered a not-so-friendly message to "President" Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan... succinctly, the US CANNOT OPERATE without military contractors, a cohort whom Karzai has banned in the country after the first of January 2011.

The "last brigade" is out of Iraq and into Kuwait. There are 50,000 US troops still in country re-branded as advisors and allegedly they're only in country for 16 more months. Note there are twice that number of military contractors in Iraq with NO timetable for THEIR withdrawal

Tensions Rise in Greece as Austerity Measures Backfire

The austerity measures that were supposed to fix Greece's problems are dragging down the country's economy. Stores are closing, tax revenues are falling and unemployment has hit an unbelievable 70 percent in some places.

Frustrated workers are threatening to strike back. [In Full at Spiegel]
One can only wonder what will happen when the US institutes the pending G20/IMF plan to rape its Social Security system for debt reduction.

Rod Blagojevich, former governor of Illinois who had been charged with 24 counts of corruption, mail fraud etc, has been convicted on only ONE charge... Lying to the feds. That verdict was read after he offered NO DEFENSE WHATSOEVER. The prosecutor claims he'll re-file charges but that won't occur until next August. FWIW, this trial cost approximately $25 million dollars.

Six "Pirates" from Somalia who had been charged with attacking a US Navy ship have had the charge of piracy dropped with the judge ruling the prosecutors had failed to prove the men violated US piracy law. Charges remain, including "launching attacks to plunder"

As American as 'Mom and Apple Pie'... A federal court has ruled that lying about having received the Congressional Medal of Honor or other military decorations is protected Free Speech. More in the commentary.

The Flu shots delivered to the Bay Area of California may be ineffective.

The Louisiana/Gulf of Mexico Shrimp fleet is back from it's first day of fishing as scientists battle over what happened to all the oil spilled by the Deepwater Horizon Macondo well. It may be toxically mixed with 'dispersants' in the Gulf's seabed.

San Francisco takes posession of Treasure Island, a man-made island accessible from the Bay Bridge that at one time was a dump, the site of a 1930s exposition, and a military base. "Developers plan about 8,000 homes, a 60-story skyscraper, three hotels and 300 acres of open space."

California's Proposition 8 strikedown is on hold until the 9th Circuit Court hears arguments. That's due to occur in December.

The US Supreme Court has ordered a Yemeni Guantanamo detainee released because the US government, after EIGHT YEARS of his imprisonment, has failed to produce any evidence whatsoever that he had done anything to anyone. More.

Still more US Supreme Court. The "Birther" lawyer who advised soldiers to refuse deployment orders to Afghanistan because Obama 'was not born in the US' and could not give legitimate orders has lost her emergency appeal to the Supreme Court after a Federal judge in Georgia sanctioned her for "what he said was an abuse to the privilege of practicing law."

She wants it baaad! In the California gubernatorial race, Meg Whitman has topped the 100 million dollar mark.... of her own money.

The coolant pump change out at the International Space Station is due to occur today.

The last US troops except 50,000 Stay-behind (snigger) "Advisors" and twice that number of Mercenaries are packing their bags for the flight out of Iraq. Expect their redeployment to our Afghanistan, Pakistan, Horn of Africa, and Latin American theaters of operation.

Leaving behind an Iraqi government still isn't. More.

To wit... No Coast Guard. Over the weekend three men with AK47s and a boat attacked and robbed FOUR CARGO SHIPS anchored near Basra... even the tableware was taken.

More protest in Kashmir as troops shoot at the crowds. 75 dead so far, and that on top of the monsoons that have hit that region. More on the effect of those monsoons on the West's imperial wars in the region in the commentary.

If you were a US veteran discharged between approximately 2004 and 2007 for 'personality disorder', you've potentially been mis-diagnosed and under -paid. But...

"The Hump"... Job bloat in the US military will be whittled down with 50 top brass officers in the various services being coaxed and coerced into retirement.

But the ones that remain employed are still pulling the strings ... "General Petraeus insists he will not be bound by Obama's Afghan exit date", The Guardian (UK)

41 years ago yesterday it was the only news one could see on the front pages of America's newspapers, and despite the fact 16 year old Razer was in attendance over that weekend and has stories of the times to tell, let S. Brian Willson set the scene for our last news item...
Woodstock, NY, 41 yrs ago, Aug 15, 1969, the tiny town is scene of a 300,000 people's festival of a cultural revolution.

Just back from Viet Nam, I was on military leave, coincidentally at a B & B in Woodstock, VT. Only learning of the festival in the newspaper at breakfast table, I was ecstatic that a people's revolution seemed in the making. Another couple at the table was in grief as their only son had been killed in Viet Nam the previous month. When I told them I was just back, they clasped my hands and we just cried together, hoping that a revolution was about to turn the USA into a kind society.

If, only if. [In Full]
Meanwhile, in the here and now, in the 'revolution interrupted', the word gets passed around:
This is a nation-wide call to action!

Come to Fort Hood, Texas, Aug. 22 to participate in peaceful actions with veterans and anti-war leaders opposing the deployment of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment's 5,000 Soldiers to Iraq. This is your invite. Can you attend? [In Full]
