«o» The Florida primary is in progress but it will be about eight hours until we start seeing the results. Meanwhile Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney are still insulting each other while EVERYONE is wondering where Rick Santorum's campaign funds are coming from.

«o» Mic Check In Tahrir Square - The Egyptian protesters are demanding the military ruling junta turn over the government to their recently elected civilian government now while the military is clamping down on 'international universities' and searching for their Egyptian students... Then there's the NGO the US Secretary of Labor's son works for... The International Republican Institute... Six of the employees including the Secretary's son have taken refuge at the US embassy.

«o» The senate voted to curb insider trading by congressional and senatorial representatives yesterday. The vote was 93-2 Aye but the measure has yet to pass the house. Even if it does pass , expect no enforcement.

«o» There is a one day strike by unionized Kaiser-Permanente nurses throughout California today in an attempt to force the HMO to allow collective bargaining by nursing aides and other lower level staff. The last one day strike cost Kaiser $14 million dollars.

«o» More of a "Snake Farm" than it ever was - People have been dumping their pet Boa Constrictors in the Florida Everglades, which is the perfect environment for the HUGE WHEN FULLY GROWN reptiles. However, The Everglades contains no natural predators and the massive number of eight foot fully grown pythons resulting from that eco-imbalance is causing the count of small critters like bobcats and raccoons to plunge dramatically. «o» Besides, do you trust the Persians with nuclear weapons any less than other nuclear powers like Israel, Pakistan, or South Africa? Iran has opened up their nuclear facilities and paperwork to outside inspection, meaning everyone but the United States, in an attempt to get the UN to call off it's sanctions negotiations. There has been Russian opposition to the sanctions in the Security Council and IF there is no evidence that Iran is developing nuclear weapons technology when those papers and facilities are examined, the West is going to be sanctioning a country that is not in violation of any international law all...by... themselves.

«o» The Florida primary race is in full swing even as Rick Santorum heads headed home for the weekend to visit his child ill in the hospital and he's not expected to be a contender, leaving Romney and Gingich, and Ron Paul.

«o» There were 400 people arrested or detained over the last couple of days as #OccupyOakland attempted to #Occupy the city's abandoned convention center. When rebuffed they headed for Oakland city hall, during open lobby hours, and caused a major disturbance and some damage inside... there have been running street battles since and an attempted occupation of a YMCA building.

#OccupyOakland responds to what only could be termed a police riot, and the disinformation campaign that followed:

Occupy Oakland’s building occupation, an act of civil disobedience, was disrupted by a brutal police response yesterday. Protesters were met with baton strikes, shot with rubber bullets, and exposed to tear gas along the route. Police immediately issued denials that tear gas was used; however, as many victims can attest, it was used freely and without regard to safety of the diverse crowd, which included families and children.

«o» In Iraq there has been a second car bombing in three days which the government is saying are al-Qaeda actions designed to enflame Sunni sentiments and cause a Sunni/Shiite schism. But the final documents regarding Western security in the country are being looked over right now, so it COULD be people aligned with the currently standing power structure wanting 'security' in place to help them maintain power as well. FWIW, the Sunnis have decided to re-enter the Iraqi parliamentary process but they aren't going to attend the sessions. Perhaps they're worried about those attacks?

Correction... The other day it was reported that six Western students have been detained in Egypt including the son of the US Labor Secretary... That report was erroneous on my part.

«o» President Obama has toured two more states selling his economic package. He's in Michigan this morning with visits to Detroit and Ann Arbor, after which the Obama will return to Washington.

«o» The house has reversed itself on raising the debt limit. Details.

President Obama will raise the nation’s debt limit to $16.39 trillion after the Senate on Thursday killed a measure to stop the president from adding another $1.2 trillion to the total.

«o» Tonight will be another installment of the Republican debates where Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney will probably do what they've been doing for the last few days... Insulting each other about wealth and privilege.

«o» President Obama was at a campaign stop yesterday and engaged in a verbal altercation with governor Jan Brewer of Arizona. Apparently governor Brewer has just written a book called Scorpions For Breakfast where she recounted meeting Obama at the White House. She opined that the White House security team was rude for insisting she leave her cell phone with them and how she had to wait some extended period of time for her meeting with the president.

At an airport meet-up Obama told her he had read her book and she was being unfair. She waggled her finger at him, captured by press photographers in an iconic image and told him that was her opinion and he could like it or lump it so to speak. Governor Brewer may be trying to distance herself from the Obama administration for political purposes. Arizona is not quite as liberal as Chicago you know?

«o» Last week the plan for a new millennial navy and concurrent reorganization with budget cuts were released to the public, and the army's turn came yesterday. It looks like combat battalions will be reduced by about 60,000 people and the reorganization will be towards smaller tactical units

«o» Governor Jerry Brown of California is working on a way to resist the federally pressured bail out of mortgage bankers who wrote fraudulent paper, and may not allow the state to sign onto a deal being negotiated in a federal lawsuit.

Yesterday yours truly noted something unusual about the sitemeter statistics for Cabale News Service. A particular post dated September 30 2008 was outstripping today's or yesterday's postings. On examination I discovered what this hit cluster on a two and a half year old post was about... People searching the internet for "Somalia Pirates" seeking more information on yesterday's SEAL Team snatch operation in Somalia which freed a couple of people who work for a Danish refugee relief program, including an American, who had been held hostage by 'pirates'.

Somali pirates are holding a Ukrainian ship with Russian weapons systems, ostensibly on their way to Kenya as their papers say (or perhaps illegally, to Sudan, as the pirates are claiming) are negotiating with the cargo ship owners as the US and Russian navies steam towards the area.

«o» Just before and during president Obama's State of the Union address SEAL Team Six was in action in Somalia snatching a couple of Western aid agency workers held hostages by an un-named party, and rescued a Dane and an American woman without casualties on our side. Nine Somalis were killed in the raid. The hostages were either very high value (ie. CIA workers) or the SEALS are simply practicing for an not-too-distant-future incursion into Somalia to attempt keeping the illegitimate (there WAS an elected government in place, the Islamic Court Union) U.N.-established 'government' in place/kill anyone who might threaten them militarily or politically. «o» Quick Comparison - A Marine sergeant who led the troops involved in the Haditha Iraq massacre where twenty four civilians were slaughtered has pled guilty, and all others in his squad were exonerated. The sergeant will do no time, and a decision on whether he will remain in the Marines is still pending. Meanwhile, PFC Bradley Manning, accused of releasing a number of items including the Collateral Murder war crime video of a US helicopter gunship crew lying to their fire controller and aerially gunning down a Reuters photographer along with a number of Iraqi civilian including a man with children in a van who came to their aid, is facing life imprisonment for 'aiding the enemy'.

«o» In Afghanistan the winter snows have finally arrived causing a massive avalanche which has closed the Salang Pass, one of the three key resupply routes for our military operations in the country, with another one of those routes, the Khyber Pass, either still closed by the Pakistani government in retaliation for the killing of a couple of dozen of their troops by NATO helicopter gunships, or perhaps simply closed due to winter conditions.

«o» A solar storm is in progress for the next few days. Airlines have rerouted their flights to avoid the North Pole where the radiation would be severest, affecting instrumentation, and if you go out to a dark place at night, you MIGHT see traces of an Aurora

The other day yours truly reported on the massive attack by hackers all over the world directed at US and other country's government agencies, the MPAA, the RIAA, and other pimps and thieves involved in the Movie and Recording Industry.

It was such a severe and widespread attack that it actually made the MSM news... but of course they left something out because the same people who own the MSM news also pretty much own the Movie and Recording industry (It's called Media Concentration, and the reason you never hear about it? There was no booing clapping or cheering and it WAS boring. Gingrich and Romney stirred it up over who gets money from whom but other than that... «o» The European Union has finally caved to the pressure and will enact sanctions on Iran. The EU will embargo the trade in Iranian oil immediately if you don't have a contract and by the end of 2013 if you do to allow everyone who uses oil or gasoline to get used to the 'sticker shock'. The Russian are not going along with the embargo saying it's foolish and will only increase tension in the region, to which the NATO and Western industrialized nations foreign policy apparachik could only reply... «o» Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, shot a little over a year ago by a mentally disturbed young man while shaking hands at an Arizona shopping mall is resigning for recovery reasons. Her last act was to introduce a bill in the House on what to do about intercepting ultralight aircraft over-the-border contraband smuggling is due to be voted on today with passage expected.

«o» Tonight is the State Of The Union address by the President and he may talk about health care, against a backdrop of a Supreme Court ruling against taking on a lawsuit by Republican interests because Justice Sonia Sotomayor allegedly assisted the Obama adminstration with the health care bill coming up in their court, with Sotomayor sitting on the bench.

«o» Newt Gingrich won the South Carolina primary with a twelve point lead. Mitt Romney came in second, Santorum third, and the 'suspended' Rick Perry dead last. The Florida primary debate will happen tonight on a strange note with the Iowa primary recount showing that Rick Santorum won, not Mitt Romney, and by a nice margin.

«o» Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has announced the Pentagon's plan for our navy's warmaking capabilities in the new millennium. It starts with $458 million dollar in budget cuts over 5 years. The Navy will keep eleven aircraft carriers but the Enterprise, a historic vessel and the oldest still in operation, will be mothballed

«o» Yemen's president ali abdul-Saleh has FINALLY LEFT after a year of waiting for some sort of deal where he wouldn't be hunted down by international authorities... The deal turned out to be total immunity given by the country's (pretty much hand-picked by Saleh) parliament, and then he immediately left for the United States, ostensibly for medical treatment. He claims he will return to his country to live in one of his palaces.

«o» Another drone attack in Waziristan has killed several people who were allegedly leaders of the Taliban in Pakistan.

Kucinich Announces Constitutional Amendment to Publicly Finance Federal Elections

On the eve of the second anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling known as Citizens United, which opened the floodgate of unlimited, shadowy corporate spending in public elections, Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) has introduced H. J. Res. 100, a constitutional amendment to rescue American democracy from corporate money’s corrupting influence.

“Because of the decision by the Supreme Court majority in the Citizens United case, more money was spent on campaigns in the 2010 election than has ever been spent in a mid-term election.

Because of the Citizens United case, more money will be spent in the 2012 elections than has ever been spent in an election in the history of our country.

Because of the Citizens United case, American democracy has been put up on the auction block,” said Kucinich.

H.J. Res.100 would require that all federal campaigns –all campaigns for President, Vice-President, Senator and Representative – be financed exclusively with public funds and prohibit any expenditures from any other source, including the candidate. H. J. Res. 100 would also prohibit any expenditures in support of, or in opposition to, any federal candidate, so that interest groups will not be able to influence elections. «o» A US Marine Sea Stallion helicopter with six on board went down in Afghanistan's Helmand province killing all on board. The Pentagon is saying that it was not brought down by 'enemy action', but there's hardly a place in Afghanistan where US troops go where they AREN'T being shot at.

«o» Another drone strike in Waziristan has killed 20 plus people including alleged leaders of the Taliban in Pakistan. But we don't know for sure, because those drone operations are run by the CIA, an ostensibly civilian agency which is not required to report to the US public. They're not required to report the cost of these "black ops" either.

«o» France had six troopers killed in Afghanistan yesterday even as the French military pulls out of it's combat role in the country.

According to Spinner.com, Trent Reznor, MGMT, Nada Surf’s Daniel Lorca, OK Go, Amanda Palmer, Erin McKeown and the Lonely Island, the comedic band fronted by ‘Saturday Night Live’s Andy Samberg, posted an open letter yesterday stating their opposition to PIPA and SOPA.

“We, along with the rest of society, have benefited immensely from a free and open Internet,” the letter says. “It allows us to connect with our fans and reach new audiences. BREAKING: Police Fire Projectiles at Students from Occupy UC Riverside Protesting Board

The cease-fire against California students appears to be over.

Students from UC Riverside, protesting today's Board of Regents meeting, were confronted by riot police, with multiple reports indicating they were fired upon with paint-filled bullets and other projectiles that injured several at the scene.

The students, many of whom are associated with Occupy UC Riverside, today protested and (ultimately) shut down a Board of Regents meeting where tuition hikes were planned to be discussed.

The meeting was adjourned when students who managed to get inside refused to be silent in the face of skyrocketing tuition costs. After the meeting was closed, the board members were escorted off of campus amidst what were, for most of the day, incredibly peaceful and nonviolent protests.

It looks like the payroll tax relief bill will be passing and the president made a deal on the KeystoneXL pipeline from Canada to Houston because the State Department says that there isn't enough time before the bill's passage to do an environmental study, no less because the people of Nebraska and the state itself not wanting the pipeline because it would most likely damage the underground aquifer the citizens of Nebraska depend on for much of their water. The South American country whose government was overthrown by a coup d' etat while the US looked on despite the coup's illegality and a FORGED resignation letter by the country's president Manuel Zelaya... We’ve been talking about the Golan case, and its possible impact on culture, for years. If you’re unfamiliar with it, it’s the third in a line of cases, starting with the Eldred case, to challenge aspects of copyright law as violating the First Amendment.

The key point in the case was questioning whether or not the US could take works out of the public domain and put them under copyright.

The US had argued it needed to do this under a trade agreement to make other countries respect our copyrights. Of course, for those who were making use of those public domain works, it sure seemed like a way to unfairly lock up works that belonged to the public. It was difficult to see how retroactively taking works out of the public domain could fit into the traditional contours of copyright law… but today, on the day of the big SOPA/PIPA protests… that’s exactly what happened (pdf). Sopa and Pipa protests not over, says Wikipedia

After a 24-hour blackout, Wikipedia has returned to full working order but declared: “We’re not done yet.”

The site had blocked its content for 24 hours in protest at proposed anti-piracy legislation in the US.

The encyclopaedia said the site had been viewed 162 million times, with eight million people following instructions to contact politicians.

The protest led to eight US lawmakers withdrawing their support for the proposed bills.

Two of the bill’s co-sponsors, Marco Rubio from Florida and Roy Blunt from Missouri, are among those who have withdrawn their support after “legitimate concerns”.

But backers of the legislation, led by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), described the action as an “irresponsible” publicity “stunt”.

The Stop Online Piracy Act (Sopa) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (Pipa) have caused considerable controversy among internet users and businesses since the plans were proposed in October last year. [More @ BBC]

The Internet Archive believes that it is critical to protest and raise awareness of pending legislation in the United States: House Bill 3261, The Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and S.968, the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA).

We are going dark from 6am to 6pm PST on Wednesday, January 18 (14:00 - 02:00 UTC) to drive a message to Washington. We need your help to do this.

Legislation such as this directly affects libraries (pdf) such as the Internet Archive, which collects, preserves, and offers access to cultural materials. Furthermore, these laws can negatively affect the ecosystem of web publishing that led to the emergence of the Internet Archive.

«o» Congress is back in session and the first thing they're going to do is something they did just last August... increase the debt limit. In August the Republicans stonewalled the increase which went a long way towards causing our S&P credit rating to be reduced and damn near crashed the US economy/shut down the federal government. Ron Paul has returned to Washington JUST TO BE SURE he votes AGAINST the increase. Yours truly believes that Paul as president he would eliminate A LOT of the problems in the US simply by eliminating any federal agency that keeps track... No agency to keep track of racial profiling (and note those agencies often keep track of police activities like 'profiling' and police/civilian abuse issues as well)? PRESTO! No racial profiling. Yes folks... He's REALLY that simple(minded). He expects YOU to keep a 'simple mind' about you as well.

«o» #OccupyCongress showed up as a group of about a thousand people on the streets of Washington, DC yesterday. There was at least one arrest on the steps of the Supreme Court, and at the White House, in the wake of the protest's presence outside the gates (the White House staff turned on the lawn sprinklers to harass the demonstrators) someone threw a smoke bomb over the fence, causing a lockdown of the premises. The president and the first lady were out at dinner and did not get 'smoked out'.

«o» In Wisconsin, governor Scott Walker is up for a recall election in the wake of last year's attack on union benefits after a petition with over a million signatures was delivered on time to the appropriate state office. If Walker is recalled, it will be only the third time in US history a state governor has been recalled.

«o» The FBI has a new plan for 'illegal' immigrants captured on the US border. Prosecution will not occur unless there was some other type of criminal activity and the 'illegal' will simply be deported.

The entertainment industry usually gets its way in DC—but it was no match for Reddit, Wikipedia, and BoingBoing.

Only two American industries have ever had the clout in Washington to force Congress to ban Wall Street from trading futures on their products. The first is onions—futures trading in no one’s favorite root vegetable was banned in the 1950s after farmers protested that Chicago speculators were manipulating prices. The other ban is more recent: In 2010, at the urging of the Motion Picture Association of America, one of Capitol Hill’s most powerful lobbies, Congress banned movie futures as part of the Dodd-Frank financial regulatory reform bill.

The big studios took on Wall Street—which isn’t known for losing lobbying fights—and won. So this month, when all the big entertainment companies joined forces with Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform and the US Chamber of Commerce, the nation’s foremost big business lobby, to fight for sweeping anti-piracy legislation, it was almost a foregone conclusion that they would get what they wanted.

Further, if you join the Army you will be rotated throughout the all of the global regions... Africa, South America, the Middle East, and the Asia/Pacific basin. It's called "increased OPTEMPO", and it's NOT a particularly good thing for our soldiers morale, health, OR their warfighting capabilities.

While on tour President of Iran Ahmadinejad made a twenty four hour stopover in Cuba where he talked with the nation's leader Raul Castro for FIFTEEN HOURS. «o» Space Junk from a Russian Phobos satellite is due to reenter the earth's atmosphere on Sunday. One should probably not be on a cruise ship off the coast of Madagascar, because that's our 'rocket scientists' best guess as to a re-entry point on Earth. The court ruled there has to be somewhat of a full 'mechanism' for senatorial operation In place to prevent those appointments, and having someone come in, open a session, and close the session IS NOT a full mechanism. «o» Santa Clara California has refused to accept $100 million dollars offered by the state for the housing, care, and feeding of non-violent felon inmates due to be released to county jails under a federal court order. The county says they have no plan to build more facilities, nor do they have the locations to do so. They also say it would cost a lot more than that amount to create such facilities.

The state of California also has plans for California Youth Authority prisoners, who may be released in the future due to the governor's plan to shut all of those facilities. Expect LOTS OF young Ex-Cons on the streets with ZERO SOCIAL SERVICES available to them. No Food Stamps... no nuthin'. The youths released will be most affected due to their age... because they are being released into the job market crippled by their felony convictions, which prevent their being hired for many jobs, cash handling sales jobs, which are all there really are in the way of 'jobs for youths' in California, and typically, having been incarcerated at an early age, they also have no other marketable skillsets.

It might be noted that the annual cost of keeping a kid in prison in California is $200,000... and California's prison guards earn considerable more than a school teacher in the state.

“Aiding the enemy”: That’s one of the crimes that Lieutenant Colonel Paul Almanza, who was tasked with an investigation of Manning’s case, says there is evidence he committed. Almanza has advised the Army to submit Manning to a court martial, relating to the massive, classified document dump to Wikileaks, with which he’s been accused. Manning’s defense attorney, David Coombs, has voiced complaint that Almanza works in the Justice department as a civilian. Justice is currently building a case against Wikileaks head Julian Assange, which opens up risk of conflict of interest. As officials in Tampa, Florida, make plans to manage an estimated 15,000 protesters expected to descend on the city during the four-day Republican gathering in August, their counterparts in Charlotte, North Carolina, are ramping up crowd-control training in the run-up to the DNC.

«o» President Obama met the American corporatists and some labor representatives yesterday to discuss "insourcing". Insourcing is what it sounds like... the opposite of outsourcing jobs to other countries (hereafter known as 'sweatshop nations'). Obama's plan, which will be presented in a couple of weeks, will give tax cuts and breaks to businesses who bring their jobs back to the US. The teeth in that plan? The plan will take away tax breaks for companies that job out their labor, which many companies have noticed is a break even proposition anyway considering the increasing cost of transport from the aforementioned sweatshop nations, and fallout due to poor production quality. Which is what you get, even using US labor, when the workers are mistreated and work too many hours in substandard conditions.

«o» In the runup to the South Carolina primary elections Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry are going after Mitt Romney for his business background as a corporate take over artist AKA Creative Destruction or Vulture Capitalism.

«o» The US Supreme Court has ruled unanimously that people who work for religious organizations, in this case the Catholic Church, are not protected by the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA).

«o» The Taliban has said they will not stop fighting during the peace talks which will probably occur in Qatar, and the State Department has sent a high level official to begin planning for those talks.

Both Karzai and the Taliban have condemned a video that surfaced this week and appears to show U.S. Marines in Afghanistan urinating on dead Taliban fighters, though the Taliban said the video would not break up talks with the United States (BBC, Tel, Reuters). The Pentagon is investigating the video, the content of which could constitute a violation of the Geneva Conventions (Tel, Guardian, CNN, LAT, Post, BBC, Reuters).

But topping the list is the number of Americans who think there are strong conflicts between the rich and the poor: According to a new Pew poll, fully 66 percent of Americans believe there's some serious class warfare in this country.

These perceptions are stable among different income groups: 64 percent of those making less than $20,000 perceive a conflict, and 66 percent of those making between $20,000 and $40,000, 71 percent of those making between $40,000 and $75,000, and 67 percent of those making more than $75,000 agree with them.

«o» Jacob Lew (backgrounder) , the president's budget director is moving up to chief of staff in the Obama administration after the State of the Union address later this month and the former chief, William Daley, is resigning, and is expected to go back to Chicago, ostensibly to work on the Obama election campaign.

«o» Iran's top nuclear scientist responsible for reprocessing fissionable materials has been assassinated in Tehran. Two motorcycles pulled up next to his car and attached a limpet mine, a magnetic explosive charge, killing him, his driver, and others. Suspects? The United States and Israel.

In a similar vein, It's also notable that in the United States, Bio-Chem warfare scientists have a rather short life expectancy and a statistically high number of them end up dead for reasons not due to contamination by their own bio-weapons. One instance is reported here.

Iranian nuclear scientist killed in bomb blast

Iranian nuclear scientist and university professor, Mostafa Ahmadi-Roshan, was killed when his car exploded in North Tehran. The Iranian authorities blamed Israel for what it called a "terrorist bomb blast." Ahmadi-Roshan was a chemistry engineer and department supervisor at the Nantz uranium enrichment facility,one of two sites where scientists are suspected to be working to advance nuclear weapons technology. Witnesses said the blast occurred after an unidentified motorcyclist stuck a magnetic explosive device to the car, which injured at least two others. This is the fourth such attack in the past two years for which Iran has implicated Israel and the United States for attempting to assassinate key figures involved in the nuclear program, but the countries deny responsibility. «o» In Pakistan the supreme court has ordered the Prime Minister, who just sacked the Defense Minister, to charge the country's president with corruption and put him on trial or they will remove the Prime Minister by court order. This comes as the question of the relation between the Pakistani government, their military, and the US is under intense critique and discussion on both sides of the diplomatic divide.

Court Won’t Allow Private Prison Labor Lawsuit After Permanent Damage To Both Of Prisoner's Arms

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court won’t allow employees at a privately run federal prison to be sued by an inmate in federal court despite his complaint that their neglect left him with two permanently damaged arms.

The high court ruled 8-1 Tuesday to throw out the federal lawsuit by inmate Richard Lee Pollard against employees of the GEO Group, formerly known as Wackenhut Corrections Corp. Pollard wanted to sue for his treatment after he fell and fractured both of his elbows at the privately run Taft Correctional Institution in Taft, Calif(ornia).

Pollard said GEO officials put him in a metal restraint that caused him pain, and refused to provide him with a splint, making his injuries worse and causing permanent impairment. He sued in federal court for money, claiming GEO officials had violated the Eighth Amendment prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment... [More @ Salon]

«o» The Supreme Court has handed a ruling banning foreign nationals from contributing to US elections back to the appeals court it came from untouched. The lower court ruled that the ban stood, and for now that seems to be the case.

«o» The president of Iran is on tour of nations friendly, and business related to his country. Right now he's in Venezuela discussing oil interests and refinery development. The next stop is Nicaragua where he will discuss the potential for a pipeline and then to Ecuador where he will discuss the potential for getting a piece of EXXON's action in the country. EXXON was just fined billions of dollars by Ecuador for polluting their land and waterways, and may just leave instead of fessing up, manning up, and paying for their share of that country's industrial pollution problem. Then Iran's president will visit Cuba to meet it's new leader.

«o» Pakistan is experiencing a series of attacks on police and army units in their Northwest frontier region with thirty five killed overnight in a bomb attack. It's apparent the Waziris don't want to be part of Pakistan anymore, and the territory's constitution/charter does allow for their secession

«o» Fort Lewis Washington is on full lockdown with no one entering or leaving the base after it was discovered over the holiday that a large amount of high tech infantry equipment including the latest in night vision goggles are missing from inventory.

«o» In Yemen the cabinet has voted immunity from prosecution for the reluctant-to-vacate former president Saleh and all of his cabinet. Meanwhile a full scale civil war rages in the streets of towns and villages throughout the country.

SANTA CRUZ - Mayor Don Lane says the biggest step the community can take to reduce homelessness is to fund more low-cost permanent housing rather than focus primarily on providing temporary shelter, treatment programs and meals.

After returning to the mayor's seat for the first time in 20 years, Lane told a packed City Council Chamber in December he would make ending homelessness his top aim in 2012. Coming on the heels of a year marked by his predecessor's economic initiatives, Lane said his push would not come at the expense of business development, budget balancing, environmental issues, public safety and other concerns shared by council colleagues.

Now, a month later, Lane has outlined how he'll go about tackling homelessness while still leading the seven-member body toward raising revenue and grappling with the loss of redevelopment funding. [In Full]

Unfortunately, without jobs to match that housing, the best that could be hoped for is 'warehousing' the homeless, which the new mayor believes would get them off the streets, but most important to the local businesses and government, it MIGHT keep them away from the rapidly failing downtown shopping area. That will not happen. Without work they will STILL go where the potential for earning some money by panhandling or street performance exists.

The comments on that Santa Cruz Sentinel article show a disgusting level of hatred for these poster's former neighbors and other forms of ignorance... claiming that a local police officer told the poster that '90% of the local homeless were hard drug addicts' and other such propaganda.

«o» The vote rigging begins early when you're a Republican - One of the people counting the votes for the Iowa Caucus has publicly noticed that the number of votes he counted in a district he was responsible for tallying had extra votes added to Mitt Romney's 'tab' that weren't there when he counted them. The runner-up Rick Santorum was apparently the winner.

«o» The joint maneuvers by the US and Israeli navy in the Persian Gulf have been postponed even as the Iranians finish ten days of naval exercises to sharpen their tactics for shutting off the preeminent oil shipping channel through the Straits of Hormuz, which they claim they WILL do if there are any further sanctions placed on them by the UN or Western nations.

«o» The employment numbers are in and there appears to be 200,000 new jobs, which pushed the unemployment rate down from 8.6% nationally to 8.5%. However there is more than one way to measure those numbers. The Center for Economic and Policy Research suggest there are problems with the US government's calculations and suggests modifications:

From peak to trough, the United States lost almost nine million jobs in the most recent economic downturn. What was completely unprecedented about the most recent recession, however, was the explosion in long-term unemployment. The depth and length of the recession pushed the long-term unemployment rate – the share of unemployed workers who have been unemployed for 27 weeks or longer – to over 40 percent throughout the entirety of 2010 and 2011. The official concept of “long-term unemployment,” however, is incomplete and, in some cases, even potentially misleading. As tracked by government statistics, the long-term unemployed are only a relatively small part of the population facing extended, sometimes permanent, spells without work.

Econmist Dean Baker, also from CEPR further suggests that "Unemployment Falls to 8.5 Percent, but Job Growth Remains Weak" and notes that "The unemployment rate for women edged up slightly to 7.9 percent."

He also shows:

White men have gained much more than black men over the last year, with a 1.4 percentage point drop in their unemployment rate to 7.1 percent. For black men, the decline has been 1.1 percentage points to 15.7 percent. EL PASO, Texas (AP) — The grandmother of a Dallas teen who was deported to Colombia is hoping the 15-year-old can come back soon and says U.S. officials should have done more to identify the girl after she gave a fake name and claimed to be an adult.

U.S. immigration officials say they're investigating the circumstances of the case involving Jakadrien Lorece Turner, but that they followed procedure and found nothing to indicate she wasn't who she claimed to be — an illegal immigrant from Colombia.

The girl, who ran away from home more than a year ago, was recently found in Bogota, Colombia, by the Dallas Police Department with help from Colombian and U.S. officials.

The Colombian government said the U.S. embassy on Thursday submitted the necessary documents for Jakadrien to return, but it wasn't clear exactly when she might be back in the U.S.

U.S. immigration officials deferred questions about when the teen might return to the State Department, which said it was aware of the case but declined to comment further, citing privacy reasons.

According to the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the girl was enrolled in the country's "Welcome Home" program after she arrived there. She was given shelter, psychological assistance and a job at a call center, a statement from the agency said. When the Colombian government discovered she was a U.S. citizen, it put her under the care of a welfare program, the statement said. [In Full]

The puppet gets uppity... citing the Afghan Constitution which apparently protects his citizen's human rights more vigorously than the US Constitution:

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — President Hamid Karzai demanded Thursday that the U.S. detention center at Bagram Air Base be handed over to Afghan control within a month, along with all Afghan citizens held by the coalition troops across the nation.

A presidential statement said Thursday that keeping Afghan citizens imprisoned without trial violates the country’s constitution, as well as international human rights conventions.

The prison, inside the sprawling U.S. base at Bagram north of Kabul, abuts a a well-known public detention center known as Parwan, which is run jointly by Afghan authorities and the U.S. military.

It’s unclear how many high-value detainees are being held at the U.S. facility. Human rights groups have claimed that detainees were menaced, forced to strip naked and kept in solitary confinement in windowless cells.

A statement from Karzai’s office said he issued instructions to a commission consisting of the ministers of defense, interior and justice, as well as other top government and judicial officials, “to complete their job regarding the handing over of the (Bagram) prison and other prisoners who are held by foreign forces.” [Continue Reading @ Salon]

«o» The US political news is mostly icing and no cake today, in regard to the known-to-be-meaningless "Iowa Caucuses" where the discussion revolves around Rick Perry's deciding to stay in and Michelle Bachmann's decision to get out... but there IS some news with content, and the Obama administration is making that news as the president makes a recess appointment of four people to the National Labor Relation Board (Details @ The Hill) which reestablishes the board. The NLRB hasn't been able to meet because there weren't enough members to form a quorum. President Obama also recess appointed a new chairman for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau... The new chairman is one of the people who designed the program. More about the 'dust-up' due to occur when the Senate returns to session on January 23 for what few hours they DO work, and more still in the commentary.

White House 'very confident' recess appointments were legal

President Obama is confident he had the authority to recess-appoint Richard Cordray to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, White House press secretary Jay Carney said Thursday.

Republican leaders blasted Cordray’s appointment as an “unprecedented” and potentially illegal power grab by the president, but Carney said the White House is “very confident” that the law is on their side.

At the same time, Carney added, "I don't want to anticipate legal challenges we haven't seen yet."

Business groups say legal challenges to the recess appointment could come swiftly, and an official with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce told The Hill a court fight over the appointment is a near certainty. [More @ The Hill]

«o» Ecuador has fined the Chevon corporation ~~$35~~ $18 Billion dollars for toxifying the countryside, which Chevon had appealed and lost. «o» The Iowa caucuses have ended with millions of dollars spent, and the 'winner' was Mitt Romney who inched out the second place winner Rick Santorum, followed by Ron Paul and then Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann. Perry and Bachmann are reconsidering the viability of their presidential campaigns right now.

The margin was eight votes between the first three candidates but the most interesting statistic is the fact that Downtown Manhattan has more Republicans than the total Republican votes cast in Iowa... So why should anyone care about the Iowa Caucus decision? More about that in the commentary

«o» President Obama has signed initial sanctions against the Iranian banking industry (which many consider to be the main target of Western interest considering Iran [nor had Libya under Muammar al-Gadaffi], subscribe to the Western international banking clearinghouses and have threatened to take their oil sales and transact them in some other currency besides the US dollar). Meanwhile at the UN where tougher sanctions are being considered China is threatening a Security Council veto even as the Iranians fire three tests of Ship-to-Ship missiles in the Straits of Hormuz and informed the US as one of it's aircraft carriers leaves the Persian Gulf, that they should not return... Leading to this 'defiant' statement by the US government.

«o» In Syria, NO ONE seems to give a 'red rat's rectum' about the Arab League's observers with the Syrian army continuing it's efforts to suppress what appears to be a looming civil war and the rebels, the "Free Syrian Army", who are WESTERN BACKED ARMED REBELS, saying "We will take a decision that will surprise the regime and the whole world," even as the opposition parties, who had been ready just one short year ago, along with the Government, to negotiate, get shoved out of the way by what can only be described as "Thugs with guns".

According to BRITISH BASED "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights", Army deserters killed at least 18 members of Syria's security forces on Tuesday, and they probably know that with some assurance... Because the people killing the soldiers of the still-legitimate-under-law Syrian Army are probably known personally by at least some people who work for that disinformation operation. Following up on yesterday's report regarding the Taliban's opening of a diplomatic facility in Qatar:

The Guardian reports that in response to the Taliban's decision to open an office in Qatar to facilitate peace talks with the United States, the U.S. has agreed "in principle" to release some former Taliban officials from the Guantánamo Bay detention facility, including former provincial governors Mullah Khairullah Khairkhwa and Noorullah Nori (Guardian). U.S. officials and analysts lauded the Taliban's announcement as a significant step toward finding a political solution to the conflict in Afghanistan (NYT, Post, Bloomberg). Amid the reports of peace talks, at least 12 people were killed in three bomb blasts in Kandahar on Tuesday; one suicide motorcycle attack targeted a police check point, and two explosions later rocked a busy intersection (BBC, Reuters, AP). Meanwhile, construction workers in the northern Afghan province of Balkh discovered a mass grave on Tuesday near the site of a large battle that took place during the civil war of the early 1990s (Reuters). «o» For instance, The peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel are stalled...

«o» President Obama signed the five hundred page Defense Appropriations bill with the paragraphs that allow for the detention of US citizens without warrants or counsel or charges. Supposedly the detention can only happen via presidential 'edict' much like the edict that allows the president to assassinate US citizens, AND IT'S NOTABLE HE DOES NOT MAKE THAT DECISION ALONE. Nor will he be making the detention decisions alone. It would behoove us to find out who is in our president's 'Star Chamber' like group of advisors. But YOU KNOW it will be a (shhhhhh) secret. Those are the most likely people to 'review' your detention, when it occurs, as the re-written detention clause requires.

«o» The Taliban are opening a political diplomatic office in Qatar or one of the other Arab Emirates with the tacit agreement of the US government. The first item of discussion, when it happens, will probably be in regard to Taliban and Afghani POWs held at Guantanamo. More in the commentary.

Let's make a deal

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said Tuesday that the group had reached a "preliminary agreement" to set up an office in the Persian Gulf state of Qatar, and had asked for the return of Taliban prisoners held at Guantánamo Bay (Reuters, AP). The agreement follows a renewed push for negotiations with the group and the perceived necessity of a Taliban "address" for negotiations after nearly a year of talks between the United States and its Afghan adversary (Daily Beast, ABC, AP, Post, Reuters, Tolo).

Afghan President Hamid Karzai announced December 27 that he was no longer opposed to the establishment of the office, after the country's High Peace Council issued a set of 11 requirements for negotiations with the militant group to adhere to before talks could take place (Reuters, NYT, BBC, Tel, AP). The Post had reported the week before that talks between the United States and the Taliban over a possible transfer of the detainees to Qatar broke down due to opposition from Karzai (Post). «o» There were fifty three arson fires all around Los Angeles over the last week that focused, for some odd reason, on carports. By sheer luck they caught the person doing it.

«o» The governor of Rio Negro state in Argentina was assassinated over the weekend. During the Argentine 'dirty wars' he was head of all intelligence operations in the country, civilian and military. Now that trials and tribunals are in progress he may have been killed to protect certain human rights violators known and not-yet-known to silence his testimony.

«o» The hot potato just emerged from the campfire - In a one minute vote the senate sent the two month tax deduction, unemployment benefit, Medicare bill, back to the house. The house will come back into session for a similarly short time to pass it in a no objection possible vote as well if House Speaker Boerner can get his caucus in line. Details.

«o» The Justice Department has moved on Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio and told ninety two of his officers they are fired. What's left of the department can no longer enforce US immigration policy. This comes in the wake of a DOJ report that showed three times the harassment of brown skinned people compared to the 'white folk'. Did I mention the good sheriff also bragged about feeding his inmates on ten cents a day each? More.

«o» Twenty thousand nurses went on strike for one day in San Francisco yesterday along with two thousand more in Los Angeles and smaller strikes elsewhere in the state. Their only demand... No... Not pay or bennies... Staffing! MORE NURSES ON THE FLOOR! As of today the returning nurses have been locked out. That means EVEN LESS NURSES ON THE FLOOR today, and extended Christmas holiday for the returning strikers.

«o» The situation in Egypt is deteriorating while today's protests are dedicated to Egyptian women protesters who have been abused and sometimes raped by military and other government agents.

«o» Even as an Arab League fact-finding team comes to town there have been two car bombings outside military and intelligence headquarters in Damascus Syria leaving fourteen dead and twenty five or so wounded.

BAGHDAD, IRAQ — On almost every corner in Iraq's capital city, carolers are singing, trees are being trimmed, and shoppers are rushing home with their packages—all under the watchful eye of U.S. troops dedicated to bringing the magic of Christmas to Iraq by force.

«o» Bank of America's Countrywide mortgage division has been fined $335 million dollars for approximately 200,000 fraudulent loans... enough to pay about $2,000 per former homeowner for their reverse-redlined mortgages... They charged more for mortgages to people of color along with higher fees and apparently knew those loans would fail leading to the company's recovery of the property for another resale, perhaps to another person who wouldn't be able to afford the loan.

At least 63 people have been killed and up to 194 wounded in a series of as many as 14 seemingly coordinated bombings across the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. The attacks occurred just days after the final departure of U.S.troops and amid recent accusations by the Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki that Sunni Vice President Tareq al-Hashemi was implicated in several assassinations, inciting sectarian tensions. Hashemi has denied the charges and is being protected by the Kurdish regional government, while his main Sunni bloc of parliament, the al-Iraqiyya group, has walked out of the government in protest at the accusations. The attacks included four car bombs and 10 roadside improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and were concentrated mostly in Shiite neighborhoods. In response, Prime Minister Maliki said: "The timing of these crimes and the places where they were carried out confirm to all...the political nature of the targets." US: Mistakes led to attack on Pakistani soldiers

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — An investigation into a NATO attack that killed 24 Pakistani troops last month near the Afghan border has concluded that a combination of mistrust and bad maps led to the airstrikes on two Pakistani outposts, the U.S. Department of Defense and a NATO official said on Thursday.

It's unclear whether the report, which says mistakes were made on both sides, will reduce the tension between Pakistan and the U.S. over the incident. The Pakistani army has said its troops did nothing wrong and claimed the attack was a deliberate act of aggression.

A statement issued by the U.S. Department of Defense did not apologize for the attack, as the Pakistanis have demanded, and instead defended the actions of American forces.

"The report says we recognize we made mistakes, and that mistakes were also made by the Pakistanis," said the NATO official, who could not be named...

«o» Our elected representatives in Washington have gone home but Saturday's congressional agreement on a two month extension bill comprising of withholding tax cuts and unemployment benefits extensions, including add-on items such as the KeystoneXL pipeline, has fallen apart with the Republicans wanting a full year of extensions, with budget cuts to match expenditures of course. The house Republicans have also demanded a conference on it before they vote which will be impossible to do before the first of the new year and the White House is accusing the Republicans of depriving ordinary working people of their benefits.

Did I mention that the White House 'Feels your pain'?

«o» Spain goes to the right with a new Prime Minister installed today who will attempt to enforce the IMF mandated austerity measures for the country and get the collapsing Spanish economy under control.

One of the first things the newly elected Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy did was pick Luis de Guindos, a former Lehman Brothers banker, currently a director of PricewaterhouseCoopers and a budget professor at IE Business School Center for Finance in Madrid, as his head finance chief. «o» Emperors Of The North (North Atlantic Treaty Organization that is...) The US and NATO are going to build a railroad across the Baluchistan plains from Kyrgyzstan or perhaps Uzbekistan to supply fuel to our war effort in Afghanistan now that Pakistan has closed the Khyber Pass due to NATO's intentional attack on a couple of Pakistani border forts last month which killed 24 Pakistani troops. An interesting sidebar... The only people who have the expertise in building and running a railroad nowadays(this one will be steam powered) are the Chinese.

Who‘s Footing the Bill for the Obama Family’s Estimated $4 Million Hawaii Vacation?

So, just how much will President Barack Obama’s Hawaiian vacation cost this year? That‘s a question that can’t be definitively answered until the costs are in and the trip has concluded, but an assessment of the numbers shows that it will likely be the 44th president’s most expensive vacation to date.

The Hawaii Reporter has estimated that travel, alone, will cost $3,629,622 — a startlingly large figure considering the length of the trip.

And, yes, in case you were wondering: Taxpayers will be footing a chunk of the bill. After all, it‘s not cheap to ensure that the world’s most powerful leader is safe as he travels and enjoys time away from the grind.

To begin, the family is traveling separately, as Obama has had plenty to wrap up in Washington, D.C. before the holidays (i.e. the payroll tax cut drama). So, First Lady Michelle Obama already left for the family’s tropical getaway — a $100,000 expenditure, including personnel, travel and security.

Obama’s round-trip flight to Hawaii on Air Force One is estimated to be the largest expense associated with the vacation. According to the Air Force, it apparently costs $181,757 per flight hour to run the nation’s most secure (and probably its most lavish) aircraft. Thus, the total for the nine-hour trip from Washington to Hawaii and then back again will come in at $3,271,611.

And let’s not forget that a USAF C-17 cargo plane is also needed to bring Presidential limos, helicopters and other essentials along... [More, with links]

Due To Time Constraints No Synopsis This Morning

«o» Just because it's apropos, the "constraint" is sleep deprivation due to the following factors:

Having been a pretty regular participant in Razer's local #Occupy, I do my fair share of camping.

I awoke yesterday morning to:

Considering the situation, they seemed rather polite (but businesslike).

The conversation that followed was short and (bitter)sweet:

(I heard talking and rustling and look up.)

(Early morning cornball 'you found me' smile) "Hi guys! What's up?"

"There's going to be some "activity" around here in a few minutes.

You should probably move your stuff.

Umn.. OK."

I got up and packed up just ahead of their sweep.

The Lieutenant in charge of that operation made a public statement to the effect that camping would not be tolerated on county court house property and the property was to be considered a no trespassing area.

What WAS NOT clear was the fenced off area was NOT the ONLY area off limits but the unused steps where the #OccupySantaCruz General Assembly meets IS ALSO off limits.

Two people, when they were informed of that by a couple of sheriffs at 7pm that evening decided autonomously that one of the core ideals of this particular #Occupation is a 24/7 presence at the site so they U-Locked their necks to the handrail of the county court house steps.

Yours truly was up late with about 30 other supporters keeping them company.

That's my 'excuse'. I have about 3 hours sleep behind me.

I'm gonna take a nap now.

(Afterwards: The tent encampment on the San Lorenzo Park Benchlands IS safe, and under federal protection until at least January 3 when a hearing on the injunction that had been filed by the city of Santa Cruz, and 'counter-sued' by #OccupySantaCruz will be held in a San Jose federal court.)

Back then, everyone in the West protested and criticized the way the Russian cops brutally snuffed out dissent, myself included.
