H/t to ChrisM my MP3Angel for the news and commentary audio files.

[After the commentary, part of a communique from Anonymous, the 'shadowy anarcho-hacktivist collective', released as an adjunct to their purloining of seven gigabytes of NATO data. Their message is simple, and can be distilled down to a short message to the governments of the world: "If you don't lie we can't expose you." The complete 5 minute communique is here.]
» The US government claims they got him - The US government is claiming that Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed in a drone strike in Yemen, and that may be the case.

Yet if it is true we managed to kill someone who had committed no crime except claiming quite publicly and resoundingly on YouTube and elsewhere that Muslims had every right to engage in a Jihad against the United States and the West, then we managed to destabilized the entire country of Yemen in the process...

...which has about the same net effect as "Preaching Jihad", making his death a hollow victory. More.

Still more from Foreign Policy Morning Brief:
Anwar al-Awlaki, the U.S. born Yemeni cleric implicated in numerous high-profile terror plots in the United States, was reportedly killed on Friday morning, according to both Yemeni and U.S. sources. A senior official in Washington said Awlaki had been killed by a hellfire missile fired from an unpiloted drone.

The 40-year-old Awlaki, a dual U.S.-Yemeni citizen raised partly in both countries, was accused of involvement in both Army Maj. Nadal Malik Hasan's shooting rampage at Ft. Hood in 2009 and the attempt to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner that Christmas. Faisal Shahzad, who attempted to set off a bomb in Times Square in May 2010, was reportedly inspired by Awklaki's popular Internet lectures.

The 50/1 civilian/'insurgent' "Kill Ratio" negates the following claim - The US State Department has declared that they will not go after the whole 'al-Haqanni network', meaning a HUGE family clan in Afghanistan and Pakistan... and all their relations, but will pursue, in the manner seen above, specific individuals.

Meanwhile, in Afghanistan. the ISAF wasn't happy with the UN numbers regarding the increase in violence in that country (almost entirely due to the ISAF's presence), so they cooked up their OWN numbers:

From the AfPak Channel @ Foreign Policy magazine:
The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) released its own data on security in Afghanistan Thursday, saying that violence had dropped two percent in the country this year (Post, AP, Reuters, CNN, AFP). The release came a day after a United Nations report that found "security incidents" had increased nearly 40 percent this year, a discrepancy originating in part from different definitions and standards for inclusion; the U.N. count includes arrests, assassinations, and weapons stores discovered, for instance, while ISAF's does not. However, the coalition found that while violence had decreased markedly in Afghanistan's south, it was up 15 percent in the country's east compared to last year (Post). [More with (links)]

Suicide attacks have continued with average of 2.5 attacks per weekly, which is slightly lower than last year’s weekly average of 3 attacks per week. However, due to increasing usage of suicide bombers in complex attacks, the amount of “used” suicide bombers have continued increasing in Afghanistan.

#OccupyWallStreet reaches out to the "99%", and they respond:

New York City labor unions are preparing to back the unwieldy grassroots band occupying a park in Lower Manhattan, in a move that could mark a significant shift in the tenor of the anti-corporate Occupy Wall Street protests and send thousands more people into the streets.

The Transit Workers Union Local 100's executive committee, which oversees the organization of subway and bus workers, voted unanimously Wednesday night to support the protesters. The union claims 38,000 members. A union-backed organizing coalition, which orchestrated a large May 12 march on Wall Street before the protests, is planning a rally on Oct. 5 in explicit support. And SEIU 32BJ, which represents doormen, security guards and maintenance workers, is using its Oct. 12 rally to express solidarity with the Zuccotti Park protesters.

"The call went out over a month ago, before actually the occupancy of Wall Street took place," ... Both the New York Metro Area Postal Union and SEIU 1199 are considering such moves. [More]

»  A fine line between genius and stupidity - Balsa wood Razor blades, glue, and C4. That's what a Massachusetts physics graduate student was planning to use to attack the Pentagon and the Capitol. If you haven't guessed, that student was going to build LARGE radio controlled model airplanes, stuff them full of explosives, and... You get the picture? Unfortunately for him, he picked the wrong source to supply the explosives... The FBI, when he apparently talked with someone who claimed to be an al-Qaeda operative and told the gent he was looking for some assistance purchasing military grade explosives... instead of simply taking in a few lectures in organic chemistry and 'rolling his own'.

Much more in the commentary.

The reference to "Krazie" in the commentary title, as told in a first person narrative by Carola Von Hoffmannstahl-Solomonoff.

It's a short but substantive biography of a person recently passed, Robin Palmer... A close friend of the well-known American 'radical' Sam Melville.
They were both imprisoned at Attica prison New York state at the time of the rebellion for the attempted bombing of a New York City armory in the early 70s. It's also a slice-of-history of the white anti-imperialist radical movement in the 1960s.
By Spring 1970, Weatherman was whirling in the vortex; they’d started bombing targets that to them, symbolized Pig Amerika. After several members blew themselves up while building an anti-personnel bomb (intended for an army dance at Fort Dix) in the basement of a West Village townhouse, Weatherman went fully underground. Becoming the Weather Underground. Robin and Sharon continued to be kept in the loop. Their bomb plot was not an official Weather Underground action, but leadership members knew about it beforehand. The bombing was set for December 4th, 1970 — in honor of Black Panther Fred Hampton, who’d been shot to death by Chicago police one year earlier.

Robin had allegedly participated in an earlier series of bombings that took place in 1969 under the aegis of Sam Melville and a group, or groups, of people loosely referred to as the New York Collective. Melville wasn’t a Weatherman. He was a middle-aged, profoundly alienated and unaffiliated radical who admired “Mad Bomber” George Metesky. Bombings ascribed by law enforcement to Sam Melville and the NY Collective were well executed. They employed dynamite and timers, and did major property damage to politically symbolic targets. (One also injured 16 office clerks working a night shift.) In conversations Robin had with me in later years, and in interviews with historian Jeremy Varon, he referred to his involvement in the Melville-connected bombings. The overall picture of Robin’s career as a bomber is murky (at least to me) but the one action of which I have clear knowledge is the bank job. Which played out like a black comedy of errors. No mission accomplished.

The cop I thought was a cop was a cop. His name was Steve. Apparently FBI. In the wee hours of December 4th, Robin and five others, including Sharon Krebs, were busted outside the First National City Bank at Madison Avenue and 91st Street. They’d just placed four, one gallon jugs of gasoline and benzene around the building when an army of cops descended. Several had been staked out on the sidewalk, convincingly posing as drunks. Robin and crew were planning to set the bank ablaze; the bomb plot was a burn plot. Other targets on their hit list including a building which housed a law firm where Richard Nixon once worked. Robin was the oldest in the group, which besides Sharon included a 19 year old man, two women in their early 20?s, and 25 year old Martin Balin (then Martin Lewis). Marty was a friend of mine. According to Robin, the night before the bust a Weather Underground leader called and said they believed Steve was a cop. Robin shared the warning with Marty, but not the rest of the group.

»  The Yemeni 'rebels' ... IN THIS CASE meaning the people who DO represent almost the entire population of Yemen (unlike Libya), have managed to shoot down a fighter bomber that had been, or was going to be used in, strafing tens of thousands of demonstrators in Sanaa, the capital. As far as can be told all the tribal groups in Yemen are now united in opposition to the government, and they've brought in the heavy weapons. There is approximately 1.5 weapons per Yemeni household, NONE of them are BB guns, and there have been major battles with those weapons around the streets of the capital. No one expects Yemen's government to last much longer, and even fewer 'know what to do' about it.

»  The #OccupyWallStreet demonstrations are growing and spreading across the country. At Wall Street the average is running about a thousand proteters a day but expect that number to swell over the weekend. SOME of the actions in other cities (Sarasota Florida is an instance yours truly was tipped about) seem to have been usurped by TeaBaggers, but they surely don't bring tents, nor do they share, and they CERTAINLY DON'T do this:

Wall Street saw yet another surge in protesters today - as hundreds of Continental and United Airlines pilots demonstrated in New York City's financial district.

Over 700 hundred activists, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) carriers, took their grievances to the streets as they protested for wages and benefits in light of a stalled merger between the airlines.

The demonstration coincided with the 11th straight day the Occupy Wall Street encampment, which has seen thousands of demonstrators descend onto downtown Manhattan - and hundreds arrested. [In Full]

Senate leaders strike a deal averting government shutdown

Senate leaders struck a deal Monday night that is intended to avert a government shutdown.

Under a last-minute arrangement reached by the two parties, the Senate approved a bill, 79-12, that would fund the government for six weeks, through Nov. 18.

The Senate also approved by voice vote a one-week stopgap measure that would fund the government through Oct. 4. That measure was intended to buy time for the House to return next week to consider the six-week measure.

Half of California voters report decline in personal economic situation

Sep. 27, 2011

David Vargo bought three homes in the Sacramento region within the last 11 years.

He figures the value of his three-bedroom Natomas ranch house has plummeted more than 56 percent from its peak. Though the 64-year-old Vargo owns two of his houses outright, the paper losses were deep enough that he left retirement to work for the U.S. Census Bureau last year.

One in two California voters, including Vargo, say their financial well-being is worse off than a year ago, according to a new Field Poll released Tuesday. It marks the fourth straight year in which at least half of Californians reported a decline in their personal situation, the first time that has happened since Field began asking the question 50 years ago... » It's day ten of the #OccupyWallStreet 'Tahrir Square Moment'. There was almost no US media coverage until this last Saturday when the celebrators, revelers, and protesters attempted to march to 34th street to meet the protesters gathered there in the wake of Troy Anthony Davis' execution.

The absolutely non-violent protesters, who over the last week or so had been 'working' the police officers assigned to watching the multiple groups comprising the highly mobile and insurgent crowd with calls that the bankers and financial institutions were looting the officers retirement and pension fund as well as destroying the economy for many US workers, were "Kettled" and "Netted" (THIS apparently violates an injunction, and later a signed agreement with the ACLU (More details at this ACLU PDF) regarding containment of crowds)

And then, a supervising deputy inspector did something truly stupid...

Which can be illustrated by this reaction:
"As we watched your officers kettle innocent women, we observed you barbarically pepper-spray wildly into the group of kettled women. We were shocked and disgusted by your behaviour."

"You know who the innocent women were; now they will have the chance to know who you are. Before you commit atrocities against innocent people, think twice. WE ARE WATCHING!!! Expect Us!"
Anonymous, the amorphous anarcho-hacker/hacktivist collective has published the name, phone number and family details of the NY police officer, indeed, an officer, responsible for the highly publicized pepper spraying of a group of women who had been 'netted' during crowd control measures taken at an #OccupyWallStreet march the other day.

Yours truly want to republish the offender's name here:

NYPD deputy inspector Anthony Bologna, Patrol Borough Manhattan South

The posts by Anonymous also mention an apparent civil rights violation charge against the officer dating from 2007.

In another piece of #OccupyWallStreet news, a park used for their daily General Meeting may no longer be available shortly.
The station said Brookfield Financial Properties, which owns the park but allows the public to use it, told it that the protesters could be "ordered off the park in the next day or two".
This raises the potential for traffic disruptions and other actions as the Flash Campers hit-and-run with their tents and sleeping bags throughout Lower Manhattan.

Thirty years of relentless prioritising of propaganda over substance, and snuffing out anything that might look like a political basis for opposition, might make the prospects for the young protesters look bleak; and it's clear that the rich are determined to seize as large a share of the spoils as remain, tossing a whole generation of young people to the wolves in order to do so.

There's NOTHING like local news for comic relief:

PLEASURE POINT -- A woman arrested Saturday for allegedly mistreating a duck has bailed out of County Jail, though the duck remains in the custody of the county Animal Shelter.

The duck was not injured and seems friendly, shelter manager Melanie Sobel reports. It is being called "Duckie," she said.

Michelle Ann Love, 38, was arrested on 41st Avenue near Portola Drive after deputies got calls about an intoxicated woman who was aggressively pulling on a duck using some kind of leash and had picked it up and thrown it down at least once, the Sheriff's Office reported Saturday.

Love was arrested after going into a 41st Avenue surf shop, deputies said.

Sheriff's patrol Sgt. Joe Clarke said he has seen the woman walking the duck on oceanfront East Cliff Drive several times, and that she is somewhat of a fixture in the neighborhood.

"But I guess she got carried away," he said. "You can do a lot of things, but you can't beat a duck."

"...a deputy reported that Love was concerned about the duck when she was arrested and they agreed to place it in the patrol car with her. But despite being cuffed, she was able to pull the duck across the seat to her, he said.

Deputies told her to stop pulling at the duck and it was "able to get free," he said.

"She was talking to the duck, too," Carney said. [Details]

"My basic problem with the R2P (Responsibility To Protect) approach is that it downplays the role of geopolitics in the diplomacy of both decisions to intervene and to not intervene.

By hiding this fundamental element in the decision process behind a screen of moralizing language talking of R2P rather than humanitarian intervention invites misunderstanding, as well as encourages imperial ambitions."

» This sort of thing has become a 'trend' (MUCH more in the commentary)- For the third week in a row someone has attacked the US embassy compound in Kabul. This time they managed to attack the CIA Station (ie. CIA HQ) with an inside attack by a plumber who'd come to make repairs.

From the Afpak Channel @ Foreign Policy
One American was killed and another wounded Sunday night when an Afghan employed by the U.S. government opened fire on the grounds of what is believed to be the CIA's headquarters in Kabul, housed in the former Ariana Hotel (Post, WSJ, BBC, NYT, Times, AP, Tel, Guardian, McClatchy, AFP, CNN, ABC, Reuters). The attacker was shot dead after nearly 10 minutes of gunfire and a small explosion in the compound, an annex to the U.S. embassy that is the largest overseas CIA station in the world and one of the most secure areas in Kabul.

Officials say they are still unsure of the gunman's motivation for opening fire (NYT, Guardian). The L.A. Times reports on how the recent string of high-profile attacks in Kabul have rattled the city's residents (LAT). [In Full (with links)]
It should be noted that most of the 'residents' in Kabul now days are either foreign to the region (soldiers, mercs, intel officers, 'business'), or are expats who can afford the security teams and blast walls. The areas being attacked ARE NOT areas that typically contain what remains of Kabul's indigenous working and poor Afghan population.

» The Saudi government, in the wake of the 'Arab Spring' revolts, has condescendingly, begrudgingly decided to allow women to vote and run for office in municipal elections... of which there have only been two.. In the NEXT election, which will happen at some yet-to-be-known date in the future. No decision yet on whether the wild women of Saudi Arabia will be allowed to drive an automobile (As a matter of fact the Saudi authorities are about to put a woman on trial for driving), but it is telling that after last year's cash payoff to all Saudi citizens in an attempt to calm them during the turmoil in Egypt, Tunisia, and elsewhere, the Saudi government still felt this measure was necessary.

» Where IS the United Nations? President Saleh has returned to Yemen and on the first day he was back government forces attacked a crowd of 10,000 people in the capital who were not happy about his return. At least forty eight people were killed.

» A straw poll was held at the conservative PAC conference in Orlando Florida over the weekend and Herman Cain, the "Pizza King" wound up winning 37% of the vote with Mitt Romney and Rick Perry trailing by about 15 points.

» President Obama stopped in the Seattle Washington and San Francisco Bay area yesterday. He will hold a "cyber-town hall meeting" today at 11am. Later he's off to San Diego, and Los Angeles, where he'll be at a "House of Blues" (a blues night club) fundraising event. Apropos for the state of the average American's financial situation at the moment.

» FEMA will be officially broke on Wednesday and the next step will PROBABLY be an attempt by Senate Democrats to put together a disaster relief funding plan, with a budget deadline, and concurrent draconian budget cuts, looming aboput five days away.

Thanks this morning to ChrisM, my MP3Angel, for supplying the news and commentary audio files.

» President Obama is on the campaign trail on the Ohio-Kentucky border where he's speaking about the Job Bill at a bridge over a river between the states, explaining how his bill will create thousands of jobs like the repair and servicing of the dilapidated structure he was speaking near. Ohio and Kentucky respectively elect the two most adamant Republican opponents of the Job Bill, Ohio-elected Speaker of the House Boehner, and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. It might be noted that even if the vote on the Job Bill happened today it would take at least till 2014 to begin 'tightening the bolts' on that bridge, but it's VERY embarrassing and potential upsets the incumbent's re-election chances to have all those jobs held up by their own votes.

» The president gave a speech at the UN yesterday asking for a negotiated solution on a Palestinian state and apparently convinced the Palestinian Abbas government, ie. the US backed government, to not take their statehood request directly to the General Assembly but give the Security Council a chance to hash something out. That would take at least a week to a couple of months. But it will STILL be a 'hot potato' even after that delay.

» The Republican Party will have another debate tonight at 6pm in Orlando Florida with Fox and Google co-sponsoring the event.

» Then there's the sory of the continuing Tea Party created budget crisis. With all the FEMA and disaster relief funding tied up with demands for budget cuts to match those expenditures an amendment has been added that would have also extended loan programs for the repairs and reconstruction using 'green' techniques. The TeaTards, allergic by birth to anything green, want it cut or they'll vote against the whole thing.

The whole thing is a continuing resolution to keep the federal government running after the first of next month.

Yesterday, the house voted down a bill that would have kept the US government running.

You read that right... More.

Interview: Libyan royal offers to help homeland

By FRANCES D'EMILIO
Associated Press

September 21, 2011

The great-nephew of the Libyan king ousted by Moammar Gadhafi said Wednesday his countrymen should be allowed to decide if they want the return of the monarchy, offering his family as a "servant of the Libyan people."

Leaders of the rebels who ended Gadhafi's 42-year-long dictatorship have said they don't envision an institutional role for Prince Mohammed el Hasan el Rida el Senussi or his family, but that isn't discouraging the prince.

Just 7 years old when Gadhafi ousted then-King Idris in a 1969 coup, the prince insisted to The Associated Press during an interview in Rome that the Libyan people should chose what form of democratic government they want - including having a royal head of state. [More ROTFL Here]
But remember... certain players in the 'grand' Libyan 'game' have familial connections that are in the ex-Monarch's line of descent, which is SAUDI descent, not Libyan or even African.

Troy Anthony Davis, from gurney, proclaims innocence before execution

Amnesty International:
"The U.S. justice system was shaken to its core as Georgia executed a person who may well be innocent. Killing a man under this enormous cloud of doubt is horrific and amounts to a catastrophic failure of the justice system."
Prisoner Troy Anthony Davis was executed last night by lethal injection in the state of Georgia after a last minute US Supreme Court appeal failed. That killing occurred despite the fact that 7 of 9 witnesses recanted their testimony saying they were pressured to 'finger' Davis in a police officer shooting 20 years ago during a robbery, and one of the other witnesses was heard bragging that HE had killed the officer.

Davis refused a 'last meal' and his last words were:
The struggle for justice doesn't end with me. This struggle is for all the Troy Anthony Davises who came before me and all the ones who will come after me. I'm in good spirits and I'm prayerful and at peace."
Here is a list of exonerated death row inmates, courtesy of Wikipedia. In other words, these are people who were sentenced to die, and later found to be innocent.

NO MORE 'MISTAKES'! End the death penalty because it has been repeatedly proven to be as terminally flawed as the systems and individuals who proscribe it's use... and it should not be a candidate for 'rehabilitation' in some more allegedly 'humane' manner.

Much Much more in this morning's commentary

Meanwhile, in the case of Kelly Thomas, a well known street person in Fullerton California beaten to death by a group of uniformed police officers:
"Fullerton Officer Manuel Ramos was charged with one count each of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter in the death of 37-year-old Kelly Thomas after a violent confrontation with officers on July 5, Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas said at a news conference.

Police Cpl. Jay Cicinelli was charged with one count each of involuntary manslaughter and excessive force." [In Full]
Wherever you are today, walk up to a police officer, ANY police officer... smile, and say,
"Justice for Kelly Thomas is coming, and for corrupt municipal governments that would allow armed thugs on their police force... ...Do you understand that officer?"
There IS some good legal news though...
Santa Cruz California 'Sleeping Ban' Under Fire
Judge Accepts Writ of Habeus Corpus

Under pressure from attorney Jonathan Gettleman in an extensive Writ of Habeas Corpus brief, Superior Court Judge John Galllagher postponed the scheduled misdemeanor trial of long-time homeless activist Linda Lemaster for at least a month. Before the trial, Gallagher will hear the Habeas Corpus motion, which claims that Lemaster cannot even be tried for Cal Penal Code 647(e) "lodging" because the case is really one of political dissent being suppressed by authorities... [In Full]
This should have been done much sooner but I'm glad it's getting done. PeaceCamp2010 was a PROTEST. not an attempt to camp simply for sleep sake, or the people assembled could have slept soundly someplace not subject to constant surveillance/harassment/arrest by the authorities.

California Penal Code 647(e) appears to make it illegal to be in the state without 'lodging', traditionally meaning a welcoming place to rest.

In my opinion, unless the California law is severely restricted it appears to violate the U.S. Constitution which has numerous safeguards that would prohibit the restriction on free travel from state to state.

The law seem to imply if your transit through the state takes longer than your ability to stay awake, and you have no recourse to 'lodging', at some point you would be in violation of the law.

Can a state proscribe how long it might take one to pass through it's jurisdiction?

Probably not... and this appears to be a rehash of the "Vagrancy Laws" long ago declared unconstitutional.

This is Razer Raygun saying 'Happy Motoring America...' Enjoy it while you can.
